I think He's referring to Election Day in th U.S.

November 4, 1984 was the kickoff of the Purple Rain Tour!

Not sure if Prince had that planned when recording All The Critics years earlier.......

Election day in the U.S. is on a tuesday. November 4th, 1982 was a Thursday. I'm not rain man, I had the same idea and looked it up.

I still belive that Prince was referring to Election Day, but it was Reagan's election that fell on the 4th of November 1980.

have no exact idea, but think the song's about just being able to be who you are and do as you like (style, music, image wise) as a rockstar in NY. prince's shows he played in NY (back then) always got good reviews
