well there are a number of younger fans here, so yes he does past the test. Yes some people will not like prince but that doesnt change the fact that plenty do.

a few people i know that always make fun of me for my prince fandom, actually fell in love with a few songs ive showed them. lady cab driver and controversy specifically. this girl i know really liked calhoun square also. im sure if i spent more time spreading the gospel according to prince, id have a whole group of followers

im 16 and i LOVE prince! my brother is 10.. he LOVES prince... my bestfriend is 17... he LOVES prince!

When beatmakers, producers and engineers are still stealing techniques, guitar players are copying his sound, songwriters want to be as liberated as him, and pop stars wants to have as meaningful hits as him... then something about him pass the test of time. Atleast his 80s music is still very much alive. Prince is the most complete artist I've seen and heard yet.

OP I think your friends are more into soul/RnB acts I know plenty of teenagers that dig Prince.

Great question. I think his 80's work definitely stands the test of time, but for the most part his 90's work doesn't.

Whilst I might disagree with him, your friend makes a valid point. For those of us who were lucky enough to get into Prince a while back, there were traditional channels through which we could discover his work. The routes by which one would discover new music today are entirely different, and he's seen fit to deliberately close these to the casual listener. As a result he has deliberately skewed his fan base so that it is almost exclusively the realm of the oldie.

A poignant f'rinstance: 'Kiss'. A timeless classic. In whichever century this dropped, one would have to contort one's face and exclaim "Damn!". And yet one isn't able to watch the video on YouTube. Thus, only those of a certain age appreciate the utter genius of this catchy little ditty...

Now, I would suggest that this is a shame, but I didn't write 'Graffiti Bridge', so what do I know?

I'm 12 and I'm a total fan. I'd rather listen to Prince than some artists now. Black don't crack either!

Doesn't Prince think time is a trick? If so, this is a trick question.

I'm 26 and I've gotten into Prince over the last year. For a long time I couldn't bear to put the radio on because the crap that comes out is not even in the same league as most of Prince's music. Alot of his stuff is so different to the music at the time it came out that it really doesn't fit into that era.

I have found some tracks sound alittle dated, mostly the 90's stuff but on the whole, imo, his music still sounds funky as hell and still different from everything else!

P.S. My 4 and 7 year old sons both beg for me to put Prince on in the car!!

He's been around since the 70's. I feel he does.

When talking about Prince he told me Prince is a nostalgic act for the oldies like me. It's for the thirty somethings and older.

Right now, I think that for the type of music fan that your friend is, the main black r&b singers that considered legit in such circles are artists such as Otis Redding, James Brown, Marvin Gaye, Sam Cooke, and Al Green. Their songs are very old and none of their friends listen to them, so I think that they feel that it's ok to like them now. Kind of like they feel different from the plebians for liking such music.

In another 20+ years it will be ok to like Prince too.
