Can a guitar player explain something for me please? On the boot New Morning, some call it Small Club, on the last song, the 21 min version of I'll Take You There/Rave, there is a guitar solo that starts around 10:30 mins.....
My question: I can hear the guitar soloing but I also hear what sounds like a bass in unison but its sounds note for note. Is Prince playing some kind of guitar pedal that doubles up, is it midi or is the bass player actually soloing note for note?

I"m not able to listen at the moment, but more than likely he is using an octave pedal. That allows one to play the notes an octave above the notes actually being played. Release Yourself

I have to listen again, but I believe it's the Boss OC-2 Octave pedal. This pedal was on my chain from day 1 & was considering removing it til about a week ago. Very underrated pedal btw!
What does he use for the solo on D.M.S.R. from the "Small Club" boot. It's distortion based, but something else is also with it & have tried for years to figure it out, curiosity gets the best of me with guitars numerous times a day! [Edited 11/1/11 4:18am] [Edited 11/1/11 4:19am]

You are correct. It is the Boss OC-2 pedal. He used it to for the guitar work on When Doves Cry, Too.

As a guitarist still in training I always get curious about guitar effects, P's especially. The one effect that still kills me to this day is the one he used to close out "Fury from SNL".
I sat, amazed at the playing that night when it aired & for many of us here, it's an anthem among fans. Once LotusFlower dropped I noticed this same effect all throughout the album & to top it off he used it agin to close out "Dreamer" from the Leno appearence.
I've come very close to getting it & what I have is: Res/Manual Knob- Outer 12 o'clock+Inner 2 o'clock Depth- 5 o'clock Rate- 11 o'clock Last Knob- Gate/Pan
This is another very good Boss Pedal, now if I can just get the Compression Sustainer to cooperate with my ears.
