Listening to this again because of this thread and I notice for the first time the. Edit of the high hat in the left channel @ 1:18. Wonder what that was going to sound like. Probably would have interrupted the groove. Straight Jacket Funk Affair

I'd say David Z and Mazarati PRIMARILY. I've heard Prince's demo and he gave them almost nothing to work with and all he added to THEIR finished version was a new, awesome vocal and some guitar. He subtracted a few things, (including a delay effect on the hi-hat) but he really didn't do much to speak of aside from recording over the boring vocal track Mazarati put on it. It's a cool song and Pricne wrote it, but I think David Z and Mazarati deserve equal credit for making it interesting.

"Purple Rain" & "Sign O the Times" made their 100 top albums list too...

I know David Z gets credit for some of the arrangement, but I feel like the most distinct part of the song is the song itself (expecially the lyrics) which Prince wrote, and Prince's singing, and the guitar.
So...fammy as it sounds, I still think Prince deserves the credit for this one, especially as it is such a minimal arrangement. The BG vocals really don't do much for it IMO. My Legacy

As a song it is not his most creative either musically or lyrically, but it is simply perfect. The lyrics are not goofy, the music is concise and straightforward.
Prince has not written so many perfect songs that universally translate to virtually any context. I have heard this song sung by lounge singers, in movies, blues singers, pop singers...and it works in any context.
Same might be said about Nothing Compares 2 U. A nearly perfect, straightforwared composition.
When Doves Cry, Purple Rain, Little Red Corvette are all great, but they have that twist that makes them mysterious and baffling at the same time. I'm not saying they are worse, just not as simple and easy for anyone to relate to. My Legacy

Uhm, how is kiss712 a sycophant? Please explain.
Remember - some people here actually like Prince....alot! Why you would get upset about that is somewhat alarming. Who rattled your, uhm, Degobah system?! ...we have only scratched the surface of what the mind can do...

Lists like that are a complete waste of time. Just a cynical attempt to create interest in the magazine/site; get as many hits as they can; generate more advertising revenue.
No more merit than that.

^True. But I am happy to see Prince being properly honored none the less. I agree that other songs are better than Kiss, but I also have to agree with the magazine's statement. There is no other song that sounds anthing like Kiss. Very unique.
I know that Prince took Mazarati's version and stripped it down, but he's still a genius. No one else thought to do that. And if Mazarati had released it like it was, Kiss would have never made such a list.

Ok, I just read the blurb for the SOTT listing on the 100 Albums List. Check this out: Genius is also the ability to usher in a succession of female vocalists—Camille, Susannah, Sheila E. and Sheena Easton, playing way out of her league—and coax career-defining performances out of them.
They do realize that Camille is Prince, right?

This is a FANTASTIC accomplishment by Prince!
I do agree with the comments above though, I wish the uneducated masses look into the songs that are genius. Surely Prince has created excellent tracks besides Purple Rain, When Doves Cry, and Kiss. These songs are beautiful and classic but Prince has seriously pumped out MANY others, as recent as the beginning of the new millennium into NOW! YEP! I SAID IT! Haha It's Button Therapy, Baby!

The version I heard from Mazarati produced by David Z sounds like basic minneapolis sound.
However when Prince took it back he turned a good idea into a pop masterpice. Sophisticated funk pop not heard anywhere else. Him removing the bass and adding that extra edge that was TOTALLY missing. Prince sometimes reminds me of someone with asperger, seing missing links, system and structure in a way that is quite different from others. I'm not buying into that he is making all his music without any input from band members etc, however the way he makes everything fit in ways people have never heard before is what makes him a genuis imo. Speak for yourself, or at least qualify your use of the word "we" to include only you & other sycophants. There's other great music out there & there will continue to be. It doesn't begin & end with Prince, as talented a composer as he might have been. Why come on a Prince forum to say you don't like Prince? Stop wasting everyone's time and go haunt a site where your opinions are wanted. If you can find one.

Credit where is due, of course, but I personally find Mazarati's version unbearable...
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
I just listened to their version. Yeah, it is so similar and yet so different. It would most likely be a totally unknown song if it had been released like that. It is still a great song, but it's hard to hear it through the totally mundane vocals.
Plus the guitar really seems like it was meant to be there all along.
If anyone ever questioned prince's skill as a vocalist, they only need to listen to these two versions. My Legacy
