What is Prince's best album, lyrically?

The best one of the 80s is Around The World In A Day imo. I don't know about his best one overall.

Either 1999 or Sign O The Times. The former has Little Red Corvette and the latter has The Ballad of Dorothy Parker - his two strongest songs lyrically.

Easily these two albums, especially LRC because of the great metaphors throughout the song.

Seriously, this time. Prince's lyrics aren't analyzed to death the way Dylan's are, but he surely has a gift for writing lyrics. His whole vision about love and sex and God and society comes out best in Sign o' the Times and Lovesexy. It's no coincidence that those are also his best albums musically. Everything comes together on those two.
Sometimes I feel that with those albums he has simply said all he had to say and that afterwards, songwriting has become a trick for him. And the succes of a new album depends on how well he performs that trick.

Around The World In A Day, without a doubt. Second place to Lovesexy. Sign O' The Times could be the third, but, apart from some great lyrics, it has rather mediocre ones too, like It, Slow Love and U Got The Look.

Sign of the Times:

Especially the title track, The Ballad of Dorothy Parker, Starfish and Coffee, If I was your girlfriend, Strange Relationship and Adore are among his finest / most 'mature' lyrics.

Can you guys please please pleeeeaaazzz explain why you like those lyrics? Just mentioning a title doesn't say anything.

Around The World In A Day is my favourite because it is introverted and uplifting at the same time. It's sparkling.

Little Red Corvette and The Ballad of Dorothy Parker need no explanation.

Sign 'O' Times & Around The World In A Day, and I also think 1999 is a good one. And Lovesexy as well too.

Hardly. You might argue that hose are two of his best songs, but lyrically? Little Red Corvette is about as subtle and witty as a turn in a punchbowl and Dorothy Parker is total surreal nonsense supposedly based on a dream. Prince wouldn't know what to do with Dorothy Parker if he ever met her or read her work. He thought Sinead was bad...

So basing lyrics on a dream makes them bad? In what universe? wacky

Not in my universe. SOTT is my favourite cd and I think it also has some of the best lyrics. Dorothy Parker is a great piece of work and very original too.

I doubt it's his best, but it's certainly one of my favorite, lyrically: The Gold Experience

Lawd,......

Whenever evil wants 2 groove
Come let me fly U 2 the moon
Then U can see how love will bloom
Joy - it's in the dictionary
See "J" Billy Jack Bitch

Of course, being that the song is about the gossip columnist C J, this

"see J" addition to a song about her was just ....clever. lol

Even the stupid lyrics like "Frontin' more booty than Peru got keyes"

are delivered with some degree of awesomeness!
