Prince - Rate The Albums - NME.com

"Rate The Albums is a new series in which we line up a band's album output in descending order of quality, from top to bottom. Then you tell us how you think their CVs should be arranged. Banter ensues.

Here Priya Elan runs through Prince’s discography in his order of preference, starting with his top album ’Purple Rain’. As Prince released about a million we've stuck with a top ten - what are yours?"

I don't think Vanity 6 and The B-Sides are in typical and/or uninformed lists. Speaking of which, what the hell are those 2 doing in there? The first one is a side project, not a real Prince album and the second one is 1/3 of a compilation, not a real album, which is cheating the list.

Really?

I thought it was fairly well informed despite no mention of any 90s/NPG albums - and forgetting LRC in the 1999 breakdown.

Also unusual to see a music hack cite PR as his greatest album. Not the cool choice...

I think Vanity 6 and The B-sides were not good choices. They better could have done Lovesexy, Black Album, Gold Experience, Rainbow Children ,etc instead of these two..

V10LETBLUES

Any top Prince list that omits The Gold Experience and The Rainbow Children is great with me.

I mostly agree with the list.

How do you not mention Gold Experience or 3121?

Should have named this thread "Rate the 80's albums".

Another typical rating...really, why do so many people act as if Prince stopped making good albums since the 80's?

Prince's b-sides were more than well known in the 80s. Hell, he turned the b-side into an artform. Erotic City, 17 Days, How Come U Don't Call Me, and others are still played on the radio.

Edit: Ah, hadn't read the list, but it goes into detail about the b-sides and even namechecks the 3 I mentioned. Seems pretty typical to me.

I know that. But did you really expect one third of a compilation/greatest hits to be on this list. I would have expected something like Diamonds And Pearls to be on a typical list, not that.

I already answered your question in my post. His B-sides are popular. Yes I would expect them on a list. No I don't take any list seriously that says Purple Rain is Prince's best album so who knows if or why D&P is or isn't there. razz

Many people think Purple Rain is his best album, including many people on this website (not including myself) Do you not take their opinion seriously?

Yes his 80s B-sides are popular, but not as popular as something like Cream or Gett Off to the general public. What really makes the B-Sides a surprising inclusion is that It's 1/3 of a compilation album not a real Prince studio album, which has to be cheating the system.
