Miko all the way.
The only one that could come close to Prince's pocket. "He's a musician's musician..."

Yeah, and that would be Miko that you were hearing, not Wendy. Miko was by far the best co-guitarist Prince ever had. Super versitile. __________________________________________________

naw the best co-guitarist would be Dez, Dez was the only one that pushed Prince's playing skills
But Dez & Wendy are the only 2 the brought a style that developed Prince's own.
I love Mico, but even he said he just played what Prince did.

Levi and uncle Dez for me.....

I think there is an argument to be made that Miko's pocket-style playing made -the- best pairing with Prince's playstyle because he never competed directly with Prince and was always there playing something that Prince would've played if Prince was the one in the pocket.
Miko sounds most -like- Prince and I think Prince is a much funkier guitar player than Wendy (who is very funky but still shows her white girl roots and kicks into over-melodic or power-chordiness at times).
People thought "Alexa De Paris" could've been done by Wendy in the studio. Miko would never, ever have been mistaken for the player on "Alexa"... He's funkier than that.

That 86 pre Parade show at First Ave showed that Wendy definitely DID NOT play Alexa De Paris! She jacked it up all sorts of ways. That was all Prince. Wendy is much better now, but Miko was smooth and like Spinlight said, Miko was playing as if it were Prince himself. __________________________________________________

Wendy is a far superior musician to BOTH Miko and Dez and that includes on guitar, bass and drums. How much are their services requested by fellow artists??? Miko and Dez combined couldn't touch Wendy's resume. The funk she laid down on Irresistible Bitch on the Purple Rain tour is 5 times funky. In fact Prince himself has called her back a few times to play with him, when is the last time Miko or Dez got that call?? Prince may be the purple Yoda, but Wendy & Lisa and Eric Leeds also sit on the Jedi Council.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Because Dez wanted to do his own thing and Miko and Prince got into fights the last time they toured. Plus Prince gets along better with women.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Ok that's the reason why PRINCE didn't call them, what's the reason no one else has?? Prince may be the purple Yoda, but Wendy & Lisa and Eric Leeds also sit on the Jedi Council.

Because they ain't as busy as Wendy lmao you know that.

If it weren't for their scoring career, W&L woulda been suing Prince for royalties by now.

The scoring gig didn't start until the late 90's, like a decade after the Revolution and no lawsuits were filed Prince may be the purple Yoda, but Wendy & Lisa and Eric Leeds also sit on the Jedi Council.

It took Tony M and Levi a while to sue him too!

I agree totally about Mico's playing, he said similar in an interview
My response to the other person's "co-guitarist" still stands with me as Dez 1st Wendy 2nd I'm wasn't focusing on the 'funkier' part.
Mico's playing during the SOtt-GB years can't touch Dez's amped up pushing during the 4U-1999 years. But Mico is my 3rd fav
Alot of what Dez & Wendy brought also helped develope Prince's style and sound that melodic playing is something I still miss. I loved the layers along with Prince's playing.

I have shows were Prince jacked up in a bad way the guitar solos on I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man,
Mico's style definately stands out from Prince's at times, I have to listen closely, But I think it's just certain cords that he imitates that makes it work. I love that instead of 'established' people bringing a totally different sound to Prince's music that doesn't work.

the reason the revolution were so brilliant is because they knew they were raw around the edges, and hungry to prove themselves. they worked like maniacs, those intimate warehouse sessions where they relentlessly jammed helped cement a unique relationship with prince that was never repeated. sure technically he had better musicians, but imo perfection does not equate to good music. levi was a much more technically gifted musician than wendy or miko, but his clean jazzy licks bored me to tears during the 90s shows. wendy and miko all the way for me, they both complimented prince equally well during different periods of his career. don't play me...i'm over 30 and i DO smoke weed....

Of course the Revolution worked their asses off to help create P's big breakthrough! Respect! And the name "Prince and the Revolution" has a magical ring to it, just like "Bob Dylan and The Band" , but for both artists, that doesn't mean that those backup bands were better than all the other ones they had. (A thought just comes 2 mind: The Revolution recording their own records the way The Band did. hmmmmm...) Let me just end by saying I love it how Prince keeps changing his bands to keep his sound fresh. I have no particular favorite.

The thing I love about the Revolution members they did have stars in their eyes to jump the wagon and make there own. I've read and heard interviews from all the member from the beginning and they all had a respect 4 their place in the band.
It really wasn't till Cat & Boni (SOTT/Lovesexy) did people start leaving to make it on their own. I think that's another difference about the after Revolution bands (they all seemed to have or want to do their own thing) so their commitment level was limited to a contract.
The SOTT band overall was different and similar to the Revolution since most were either a part of the Revolution:Eric Dr Fink Mico Atlanta Bliss or Sheila E protege:Boni Levi (Mico) and even Cat was hired originally to be a dancer with Sheila E(via video)

IMO
Apart from Prince himself, who offers the best 'chicken grease', Miko is his funkiest guitar player ever, and this is what this thread is about, right? lol
Wendy is a decent player, but not the funkiest, and i appreciate her first of all for her co-songwriting / co-composing input then for her guitarplaying.
I never did get the praise for Dez: a competent player, but nothing special to my ears (i aint no guitarplayer myself, so i might be missing something here).
I havent witnessed enough of Levi's live guitarplaying to really be able to judge him, allthough I love his solo on Sexy MF. The same goes with Mike Scott.
And Andy is just holding that guitar, right? lol

To be fair, Dez is a very accomplished player. But I don't think he is a funky player. He does do great rock solos though.
Wendy sure is good at playing guitar and singing harmonies. I hear she scores well. But her style is more fDeluxe than it is Original 7ven.
IMO, Miko takes that cake! And yes, as WonderU pointed out, Miko's resume doesn't look as shiny as Wendy's. Some people would argue its cuz Miko ain't white. Some people would argue its cuz Miko is a funk player and funk music was only kept alive BY Prince so why would anyone go for his funky rhythm player?
I could see them going after Brown Mark cuz he's bass and urrybody need a bass player. But not everyone needs a funky chicken grease player. Prince did, cuz that's how he plays. Miko was there.
