Who has been Prince's FUNKIEST Guitar Player so far? NOTE: I am not talking ROCK guitar but FUNK guitar playing.
1 - While doubting for a second, I would have to say the best so far was Miko Weaver. He is a great funk and jazz player and he added a lot of his personal style to Prince's music from 86-90. While I am listening to a recording of IGBABN live 87 right now, I have to say that I think his style of playing wasn't just crafted and unique, but also fitted Prince's funk style the best, so far.
2 - Levi Seacer jr. would have to be an excellent, second best. Technically and musically probably the most talented and experienced of them all, but not quite the style that really fits Prince. IMO
3 - Some people are gonna kill me for saying this lol but I don't give a...: Third comes Wendy Melvoin. Definitly not the most talented one, let alone the most experienced. But credit due where credit is due. She was still very young when she started working with Prince and developed the funky guitar (scratching) skills that Prince taught her, quickly into her own style, rightfully gaining her place in the Revolution that way. Props.
4 - Dez Dickerson is - in my opinion - by far the best ROCK guitar player Prince has ever had. So good even, that he could manage to blow Prince away in concert. But his funk playing was not of that same high level. Hell yeah, it was good,. However, Prince's funk guitar sound in those days, was also very much carried by Prince himself.
5 - Then 5th comes Mike Scott. Mike only played on a couple of tours and NPS as far as I am aware and I don't know that much about him. What I do know is that he was really good. However, he felt pretty out of place. Not the best fit by far to Prince's style.
6 - And last but not least comes (am I forgetting anybody??).... our dear Andy Allo / &Y!! With all due respect for this lovely young and talented lady, she needs a lot of PRACTICE, still. But she is a good singer and I do have every faith in her that she could manage to be "the new Wendy"... jk

Wendy by a mile - go dig out your Parade live bootlegs and prove me wrong. She is amazing.

lol that was quick...
I got a bootleg called "The Jam". 86 studio jam session. Proved that she had grown enormously as a funk guitar player in only a couple of years.
But she was not the funkiest

You forgot Kat Dyson, I never ever heard her play one single lick during her 96'-97' campaign with Prince.
But Yes Miko takes it & I may go with Mike Scott in a strong second, & Wendy in third followed by Levi.

Wendy Melvoin-no contest Prince may be the purple Yoda, but Wendy & Lisa and Eric Leeds also sit on the Jedi Council.

I'll go with Miko too...
Wendy, Dez & Levi are great... BUT the question is "Funkiest", that's Miko.

Wendy is in no way shape or form funkier than Miko.

^I agree with this completely!
Even though there is a factor of personal taste involved to the answer of this question, Technically Mike Scott is the better player out of all of them. Mike Scott was pretty inside the lines when he was with Prince but to know more of his work outside of Prince, he's unbelievable! I always think he was Prince's best guitar player even though I might lean towards another. ..."holding someone is truly believing"

Oh yeah, funky, Mike Scott.....yeah, it's about the negative space.....funky. ..."holding someone is truly believing"

Hard one because in funk terms I find Levi and Miko are pretty equal. Given that Levi played bass to Mikos funk before he was the guitarist I would say they are two sides of the same coin.
I will probably end up with Levi just for the guitar work on Gold Nigga. Say what you want about the Tony M rap but the grooves Levi,Sonny,Michael and Prince layed were amazing (Oil Can as an example)
Mike Scott, Kat and Wendy are all world class players but when I think of Prince's funk I think of Miko and Levi
The weird thing is I think most of the guitar players at the org are better than Andy but that's kind of beside the point as she's a Muse.
Mmmmmmm Maybe I'm being unfair to wendy. Nah I still credit her and Lisa as Prince's greatest collaborators so she still get's love.

I agree with Tremolina. But nowadays, I really don't miss the guitarists. I love it how P plays rhythm and solo guitar himself. And I never thought Wendy to be anything special as a guitarist. In fact, I think the Revolution is the most overrated band Prince ever had.

I knew Wendy would cause the biggest debate lol...
Wendy was GREAT, but she wasn't the funkiest.

Miko was the funky one on the Parade tour. The wooh is on the one!

Me too. He is certainly the best at playing his own music (duh)

It always just takes a thread like this to remind me that some fans have NO clue lol The Revolution underrated?? lol Must have never seen them live. Prince may be the purple Yoda, but Wendy & Lisa and Eric Leeds also sit on the Jedi Council.

The FUNKIEST guitar player Prince has ever had is hands down Miko followed by Levi. Andy wasn't in his recent band strictly for guitar playing but she's also learning so i don't understand why she gets so much flack. Wendy and The Revolution have been and will always be overrated. Why? idk. The SOTT band was far superior than them.

Why do you feel Mike Scott's playing is not a good fit for Prince? [Edited 10/20/11 10:40am]
