Prince: Music and More > X-factor contestant, Stacy Francis, sings a cover of Prince's song "Purple Rain" on X-Factor & brings judges to tears
I dunno if anyone's made this connection, but this is the same Stacey Francis that used to be in the early 90's girl-group Ex-Girlfriend.
She also performed with Prince a few times in the '90s (see the 3/22/95 performance at the Emporium).
I love you people with detailed information! I totally remember that group! One of many New-jack swing girl groups, but they had a song I liked. The only connect I made with her doing that song was the Nichole is friendly with Prince and Nichole's boyfriend/fiancee won Princes guitar auction, so Nichole called in a favor. I think it would be cool if Prince made Stacy a backup singer like he did with Elisa Fiorillo. I know he HAD to be watching, especially if they have a brief history.

Cool thanks! Somehow I don't remember the group, but good to know she was out there sometime ago. Love her voice. She added her own touch to "Purple Rain" and sung it well.
If you count up all the yt vids, with her singing Prince's "Purple Rain" song, she's already surpassed the 30,000 views' mark, within 24 hours and it keeps climbing.

No problem, I watched "Video Soul" religeously in college, I guess a lot of that New Jack music got stuck in my brain more than I thought. I think in the actual video they are wearing mult colored dresses, couldn't find that. Yeah, I'm going to really root for her, That's a lot of nerve to try to pick up your career again after a lot age-ism and rejection. I hope she can get some kind of career, she's still a good-looking chick... with real talent.

True. I see her as an inspiration to those who have a dream/goal they've always wanted to pursue, but are/were either told by others they'll never make it, don't have the talent or either told because of their age it's too late. I like people who are not afraid to take risks, because if you don't, you'll never know the outcome of your dream/passion-whether you fail or succeed at it, if you don't try. It's better than sitting around doing nothing about it, other than 'wondering' what could have, should have or would have been. I wish her the best. She has an amazing voice, and if she doesn't win on X-factor, I guarantee she'll get offers from elsewhere.
She's already attracting a lot of attention to herself, since her first appearance/performance on the show, and despite all she's been through with her ex, I applaud her for not believing all the negative things he told her about her singing career, and she pursued it anyway, without giving up. Not to mention her father passing away on her first day of bootcamp on the X-factor. All she's been through it seems her pain, strength and desire to survive through it all, comes out in her singing.
She outsang a great number of Princey's protege's, He needs to be working with people who are on this level. Yeah I said it. Hell, she sang better than some who have opened for him. Let me be nice. This is the person he should be working with. I'm happy she got the exposure, and opportunity through the X Factor. She deserves it.

I don't know, I think she still has the negative voices in her head, but she seems to be able to snap back into focus if she feels or told she's is "off". That's one sign of a true professional. Just gotta keep movin' and try to ignore non-productive nay-sayers. A person once told me, if you want to do something in life, just go about it, even if you're nervous or scared.

For fucks sake. I don't want Prince to be on shitty Fox shows, and I don't want stupid fuckers posting tweets about Prince when the only song they know is Purple Rain. FUCK.
Oh MarquessMarq be nice. Let the rest of the world have a little Prince too. It doesn't take away from his status with us diehards.

Watch out Shelby J! The one group of people Prince really knows how to pick is backup singers. Now he can't pick protegees worth a darn (that's a whole 'nother thread), but he can definitely pick backup singers.
Honestly though, I am hoping for more than a backup gig for Stacy. She deserves to be the main event.

I know, Right! Love Shelby! Actually, I wish Stacy could have a career as a solo artist too, but this ain't 1980s. Tina Turner, Patti Labelle, & the Pointer Sisters had a great second chance careers in their 30s/40s. Different mindset in the industry now. Hopefully it will change. I don't know, Simon did give Susan Boyle a pretty nice career, so who knows.

I think both Stacy and Shelby J have amazing voices and both would do well as solo artists. I think at this juncture in Stacy's career as returning to the industry, that the X-Factor show just gave her a chance at a solo career, and even is she doesn't win on X-Factor, I can see her getting offers to collaborate with other artists. She's too good to not be heard. I wish her well. She did Prince's "Purple Rain" very well. I bet if she sang that in front of a large audience, she definitely would have received a standing ovation.

I like Shelby's voice, but my problem with her is that she oversings waayyy too much when she's doing solos.
It's like what Simon and LA told Stacy, when your voice is that powerful, less is more.

Interesting. In certain songs I could understand an artist holding the notes between or at the end of a song, for a long period of time to give a specific effect and feel. For some it works, while some it may not. When Stacey performed on her second audition I felt she held the end note too long, so I could understand what LA and Simon meant, but I felt for this particular instance, where Stacy sang that version of "Purple Rain", she was pretty much on time with how she extended her voice, during certain parts of the song, to give it the effect she did.
I think that's what won a lot of people over with it. I think during her training/practice on this show she'll eventually learn as she goes along with the suggestions/constructive criticism from the judges, and how the audience receives her.

I totally agree with you. I think Stacy has a shot to win the whole thing (if she keeps shining like she is now).
When it comes to Shelby, I can take her or leave her most of the times.

I actually like Shelby's singing at all the shows I've seen her perform with Prince since 2006. I just never got the feeling that she oversang though, but I guess it's different strokes for different folks, and what type of singing style of an artist, moves the listener.
Stacy Francis, X-Factor contestant sang a short version of "Purple Rain" tonight on "X-factor" and did a pretty good job. She she performed in front of judges Nicole Schwerzinger and Enrique Iglesias, and brought them to tears. Anyone else catch the performance? I'm sure it will show up somewhere on the net later this evening or by early tomorrow.
Here's an article snippet about it from 'SheKnows RealityTV' online magazine:
Stacy Francis was up next at Nicole’s house, and Stacy was extremely nervous. Stacy decided to give “Purple Rain” a try and it was incredible. Stacy’s performance had Nicole in tears and had Enrique thinking that Nicole’s neighbors probably heard Stacy.
(Thanks to orger Shockadelica1 who posted this video first on this thread)
I thought she did okay. She started to take it to church for a minute, when she got a bit spiritual with it, and I bet if she sang a longer version she could have carried that song to another level. I'm sure it will pop up on the net somewhere, but not sure if it could be posted here, since it's a 'Prince song' especially if it's on youtube.
She WAS up there as one of my top two favorites.....then I find out that she used to be in some group called Ex-Girlfriend produced by Full Force
...so that whole thing she said about never having had lessons or guidance when the judges thought she had gone way over the top with her run was a big fucking lie
I have to agree with you there. Her voice is sooooo pretty. I think both ladies will make it to the next round. I can't wait to hear them both in a live setting.

Hmmm...I don't see where she lied. She spoke to them about her dreams of a solo career during her relationship with her ex-man, who told her she would never make it, so she lost faith/confidence in pursuing/continuing her dream as a singer, so I believe that is what she was referencing. I think she'll be just fine whether she wins or not on X-Factor or whether some folks like her singing style. Keep in mind these shows only show you parts of interviews with these contestants they want you to see, so we don't really know all she's revealed to them, as I noticed that they weren't showing the full performances of many of the contestants, during their second auditions.
So far she seems to be holding up, despite some constructive nd positive criticism from those who have heard her sing. She can only grow better from both, and I'm sure, because she's been in this business earlier in her life, she's more than likely aware by now, that not everyone will be in favor of her singing style or how she sings another artist's song. Regardless if the criticism is negative, constructive or positive, she should persevere no matter what, and she seems to project and possess the strength and determination to hold on and push forward, since her first, televised audition in front of an audience. I believe she'll be just fine even if she doesn't win.
