I won't be doing the yelling. Wasting my breath on bullshit is unneccesary.
You may wrap up the popcorn before it gets stale.

Why do I get the sinking suspicion that you're on your way to being cruel here? .....in a smug kinda way, of course

Eros, you need to understand something. You had no idea what you were writing and even less about what you were asking. Oh, and your answers to your question was wrong regardless of the logic, explanation and reason. Just wanted to make sure that you got that.
And Squirrel... loved the graphic. Pretty funny. The expanded version of my book PRINCE and The Purple Rain Era Studio Sessions 1983-1984 was released in November 2018. (www.amazon.com/gp/product/1538114623/ref=dbs_a_def_rwt_bibl_vppi_i0) or www.facebook.com/groups/1...104195943/

The original question can easily be interpreted different ways. I took it to mean when did my interest in his newly released music wane. For me, it began with The Vault and when I bought The Rainbow Children I was so disappointed in all the mellow jazzy bluesy stuff that he did lose me. However, he started winning me back with 3121 and by the time I saw him in concert last year he had completely won me over again.
So yeah I do think he "lost" a lot of fans at some point in time, but I know that he also "won back" a lot of them.
And the fact that many people became turned off when he converted to JW had nothing to do with the religion itself, it had to do with his decision to no longer incorporate sex and swear words in his music and performances. It does kinda suck that we will never again see him perform songs in their original version such as Darling Nikki, Do Me Baby, Irresistible Bitch, P-Control, Head etc. "Never let nasty stalkers disrespect you. They start shit, you finish it. Go down to their level, that's the only way they'll understand. You have to handle things yourself."

.....and some people eat tofu and convince themselves that it tastes like duck confit. Do you blame the chef?
How is this my fault? [Edited 10/17/11 1:23am]

I addressed the line I took issue with in my first sentence.
Blanket statements are scary things. Especially when no one said anyone had to like everything P comes out with.

The minute you thought that wasting your time writing this fucked up post is the moment you went wrong.
Get your nose out of my crotch. I don't know you, don't care to know you, and don't need to be trolled by you either.

As much as I don't generally have much time for eros - little too smug for me - I have to admit that he was crystal clear in his OP (granted, the quality of his posts quickly degenerated after that, as seems to be his pattern).
Everyone seems to have gone by their own definition of lost, and some have taken the whole thing pretty personally, but really, he gave a specific example of the sort of fan he was talking about and then asked a straight-forward question to those particular fans.
I didn't answer because I'm one of those Prince hasn't 'lost' by any of the given definitions. I don't like his old work any better than his new (or vice versa) and I'm certainly not telling what my favourite era is to this crowd
Admittedly it's taken me a while, but I get that people can be on a fansite of a current recording artist even if they only appreciate their early work - a not altogether different experience from, say, being on an Elvis fansite, where I'm sure no one is telling them to GTFO for not liking his new stuff
If there was one thing missing from eros' post, perhaps it was the middle ground - the fan that does not consider themselves 'lost', but doesn't love everything he's released either.
I was happy to take that as a given, but that seems to be the emerging sticking point for a few people.
You can obviously absolutely still be a fan (ie. not 'lost') and be discerning about what you like and don't like.
But eros basically asked, iff you consider yourself 'lost', then at what point did Prince lose you, and those that fall into that category have clearly responded.
It really doesn't need to be this hard.

I wouldn't say that. People are here because something about the man's music at some point interested them. Personally, I think he's not released a solid album in many years & his last several releases are largely funk by the numbers, but I still buy them, hoping for something special. There's plenty to talk about re: Prince beyond new music & there are plenty of reasons people might feel he lost something along the way. For me, it's not only the deteriorating quality of the music, but any number of idiotic statements & business fiascos, dating back to the Crystal Ball mess & the various issues with the NPGMC. His saving grace remains his skills as a live performer.

When did Prince lose me? never When did I start losing interest in new music written by Prince? never When did I start thinking new music by Prince sucked? - D&P
