"When I need trombone, my dog is handy"

Can someone please explain this to me because I want to give it the benefit of the doubt and belive that it is not what I think it is.

Oh, for those who don't know what I am talking about, it's a lyric in Partyman.

Wow, thanks, what a coincidence.

I mean don't get me wrong I love a trombone but wouldn't want one from a dog and besides I don't think they could give you the reacharound.

Let's break it down:

tromBONE....

1. He's playing on "bone" relating to "dog", the cliche of dog bones.

2. Also, meaning when he needs trombone, the instrument, his dog, Greg Boyer, is handy.

Sax (Sex)....

1. When he wants Sax, he calls Candy (Dulfer), the saxophone player.

2. Also, an obvious play on words referring to sex with Candy (who doesn't want that?). Prince is always playing up his women. nod

Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.

Yeah! I always figured there was nothing more to it than that!
Besides, he didn't even have a trombone in his band back then. Greg Boyer was still playing with the P-Funk.
