I think really, technically... you sell out the moment you submit to a contract or make your art into your career. You know, when you get any paycheck for your art. That's when you've sold out that art.

you can make money from music as long as you don't compromise the music for the sake of making money .. in my opinion, prince only makes music for the sake of money .. i haven't heard anything from him that felt like he meant it in a long time .. this was not always the case

I don't think that songs like "Planet Earth" or "Everybody Loves Me" or "No More Candy 4 U" are commercial in intent. And I think they are all great in there own ways, very personal humor or agenda, or musical reference.

I agree that he is not a BIG CHEESY sell out, but clearly (the proof is in this thread) he's done commericials, the score for Batman and marketing tie-ins, etc., etc. He's gotta make a living. Maybe a better way to put it is that in spite of this, he hasn't cheapened his image/brand. I still think of him (primarily) as an amazingly talented artist.

I wouldn't call it what jony did, but funksterr is dead on. Batman is the first thing I thought of when I saw this thread title. After Lovesexy flopped, he needed to re-establish himself. Two weeks of work, a gimmicky lead single and video, affiliated with the biggest comic book movie in a decade . . . mission accomplished. And won over the lead actress, to boot.

I really like the album itself but, I mean, really.

If Prince never compromised by being told to write a radio friendly hit, I'll agree that he never sold out.

If a sponsor threatens to pull their support of the tour and they have to compromise, then they're selling out.

The fragrance line wasn't about selling out, because someone told him that one of the most profitable things celebs get into are perfume and cologne lines? How many did J-Lo have, 20?

Doing a Purple Rain tour on the heels of a successful movie, selling merch at the shows wasn't selling out?

Playing those intimate shows for big money wasn't selling out?

And...Target?

Of course Prince 'sold out'. What do you expect? He is a mega superstar.

There, already this thread is moot.

But I guess I get the point: Prince just never sold out, the way he could have.

You could say he only sold out when he pretty much had to end of the 80's, beginning of the 90's.(Batman, 100M contract, D&P and Symbol album, Coca cola sponsoring, releasing the Black album)

But that's all relative. If he had ever said to be against all that, then it would really be 'selling out'. I think Prince never did however (except for BA) and that he could sell plenty of more licenses to use songs for commercials. I wouldn't have any problem with it, as long as his songs are used respectfully.

Hell the thread was over in the first place. Didn't exactly go the way the OP wanted hence why he thinks we're spouting BS when really most of us are praising that he sold out...tickets and records anyway. lol

Yes, your own. lol because Prince has sold out and he did have that LRC commercial that he APPEARED in that you are in the dark about. Either you're a great masterbaiter, or you really don't know what you are talking about. hug Bless your heart. Got your ass owned all up in your own thread it seems.

I'm sick and tired of the Prince fans being sick and tired of the Prince fans that are sick and tired!
