Uh, you do realize that Prince's version is a COVER of Joan Osborne's original, right? So Jim Carey isn't singing a Prince song, he's singing a Joan Osborne song.

Prince's dislike ties in to his publishing being controlled by Universal, not that he hates people covering his songs. Anyone can record a WB era Prince song without his consent. Sinead and the Foos recorded the songs bypassing Prince, and just let their manager handle the publishing stuff.
I'm pretty sure Prince's songs have been sung in movies and the director & producer got the rights to use it without his consent.
One of Us was also used in Vanilla Sky. I think Tom Cruise was singing a line or two from it. | |
