if prince did not "sell out" than what was that horrid verizon cell phone add doing on tv? the one with prince mouth full of marbles trying to sing that horrid "guitar" song ... prince also sold out when he stopped writing poetry and started trying to rap because prince thinks he is black and therefore can automatically rap. he also sold out when he started singing about how much money he has and how he can "buy" women and all the other materialistic crap he has .. 3121 was nothing more than an advertisement for his las vegas club .. i would rather hear a prince written song than a prince written advertisement .. prince sold out when he stopped working with artists who challenge him musically because he doesnt want to pay them what they are worth or share the spotlight .. prince sold out when he stopped selling his music in mom and pop record shops and instead made exclusive deals with cheap crap made by underage workers in third world countries stores like target ..

A lot of people are probably going to tell you that he sold out with every album he made that sounded mainstream pop (Diamonds and Pearls, Rave, 3121), as they've said that multiple times in the past. "Little Red Corvette" was used in a car commercial, too.

I very much doubt it.....

3121?? sold out??

you honestly have a limited undertsanding if you think GETT OFF is a "commercial" choice for a first single

the word?

3121?

and little red corvette was NEVER used in a commercial

oh somebody skool this newbie i havent the time

I don't know about Little Red Corvette...but U Got The Look and Kiss have been (kiss wasn't his version in the ad).

Some would probably consider putting your name to aftershave, having your face printed on pillowcases is selling out to a certain extent...what's selling out though - churning out the greatest hits on tour for years on end for a quick buck?

Working with Tony M and the Game Boyz was kind of a sell out i think

That's when things started going downhill although he was still great of course

But i can't help but cringe when i see Tony M rap and see the Gameboyz do their stupid 'dancing'

on the 1990/1993 shows disbelief feeling ill

He's sold out before. (Even though I hate that term and it's meaning. Unfortunately, in the business, making money = selling out.)

I dont think a few endorsements or commercials / ads over his 30 + years of entertainment are enough to label him in a negative way as a sell out.

apart from the song he did for the iceland advert

"so tonight we're gonna shop at iceland and get all our shopping for £19.99 - turkey twizzlers, chicken dinosaurs, prawn rings and icecream as well. if you didn't come for a bargain, don't bother shopping anymore... two thousand zero zero at the check and change left over..."

Man, Prince sold out with the 1979 Prince album. He even said as much that he wanted/needed to have a hit album for WB. He went back to his own deal with Dirty Mind but again had to sell out aka make his sound more universal and accessible with 1999 album and then the big kahuna of "lets get all the comsumers" Purple Rain. Prince been selling out up and down his whole career. And there's NOTHING wrong with it until you start pulling a Lionel Ritchie Dancin On The Ceiling *cough-diamondsnpearls-cough*

The one thing I love is his adherence to his music so close to his heart that WB etc never really had but ne song on some cheap K-Tel compilation. He was almost an instant classic on the level of Neil Young, Dylan etc. That is what's cool in the non sell out issue to me.

I agree.

Why is making money with the music one creates a bad thing? Music is all-present in advertisement. I don't understand why musicians should not compose or handle their music for advertisement.

What moralistic or artistic assumption leads to the conclusion a musician is a 'sell out' when making money with music for advertisement?

99% of my posts are ironic. Maybe this post sides with the other 1%.

other ways he could have sold out:

add for baby wipe: 'soft and wet'

tampons: Push it Up

Starbucks: Star(bucks)fish and Coffee

Visine: 4 The Tears In Your Eyes

the most important truth is that when prince was at the peak of his powers after purple rain he could have made a bundle from corporate america if he had got with the program-sing we are the world with quincy & micheal, tone his act down, stay clear of controversy, wait 3 years & release an album similar 2 purple rain and censor what he says so he wouldn't scare off nervous investors. but prince refused to be bossed even when he could have easily banked 10s of millions.maybe its integrity or maybe its stupidity. micheal & madonna sure didnt turn down the money when they were offered it in the 80's. if he made a little change selling out 5,10,20 years removed from his heyday-so what? also & if u asked prince he would tell u he doesn't rap- like james brown he speaks rhythmically.

I take that as his attempt to change how music is distrbuted. that was in line with how he has been doing things for the last few years.
