for saxophone in purple rain.

i just watched the paris version fom this year and it was one of the stronger, more impassioned performances of the song that i've seen in a while. prince was really 'on' and seemed to be into it vocally.

then, towards the end, a sax, way too fuckin loud in the mix starts playing the 'woo ooh ooh' melody and it sounds like someone's drunk uncle playing along.

i guess it was maceo but the performance really shit the bed then & there. there really is no room in purple rain for saxophone.

which lead me to start this thread, as i believe this needs to be adressed.

Well yeah there is 'room' in Purple Rain for a 70 piece orchestra, but that doesn't make it a good idea.

I didn't like the sax either.

I agree with the OP, the song just doesn't need sax. It works on Nothing Compares, do we really need it on Purple Rain

Maybe it's hard for him now to sing that part every night - it can be straining. But maybe a nice piano would be better than sax.
