Prince may sometimes be ridiculed for his looks or his image ( although never as much as Wacko Jacko) but not for mis music. I've heared lots of folks say they acknowledge his talent even if they're not into his music.

vitriol said: I can only think of 3 things that make me feel bad:
-the loss of his son.
-the Jehovah embracing (even if he's only an hypocrite).
-his chosen lifestyle, in his ivory tower, with no real contact with the real world. Hence the poor music he's been releasing since 2004. The first one is feeling bad for him, which I understand. The other two are you feeling bad because Prince is not what you want him to be. But I admit you have point with number 3.

I have compassion for Prince and everyone else in the world. Watching Prince for many years I can kind of see his "Game Plan." I can't remember the song that has the lyric, "You don't know me, U just think that you do." and I know how sad it is to be removed from a close relationship. If I feel bad for Prince at all it is because I feel as though he has tangled himself up with women so much that he could never give all of his heart to one person in a devoted manner. To love Prince would be to love a thousand secrets. It's an uphill climb to the finish line.

I don't believe most of that which you've posted up there is true
I felt 'bad' for Prince 1 time around the GB/Diamonds & Pearls years
I saw how drastically his life changed, loss and when I saw/heard a lot of music from those 2 albums and the 'Get Off?' performance where he had the assless pants... I felt sorry for him. He didn't seem like Prince anymore
When I hear Money Don't Matter 2Night I feel that

That pretty much sums it up. Besides the above, it's difficult to empathise with a Howard Hughes figure wrapped up in their own fantasy world.

Do you think Prince's isolated lifestyle is to blame for his poor music? If so, it would also have prompted Prince's best music. I think this lifestyle didn't start in 2004...

It surprises me that you mention Gett Off and Money Don't Matter 2Night. Those of you who are detractors of this album usually mention other moments, especially Tony M and all that.
I love this album, so I can't say I felt bad for him; on the contrary, I felt good because he had made a great record which also brought him commercial success.

I've always felt bad that he didn't get his camel. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Hummmm..............Prince is badass and he knows it. I'd suggest u put your energy into something/someone else.

No I think the album was good, I was interested. I love Money don't Matter 2Night
But a combination of the GB era & Diamonds & Pearls showed me who drastically his circle/world/relationsips had changed and here was a more 'polished' Prince vs the "homemade" outfits and raw Prince of the 1980's. He seemed very "hollywood" during this time too me

Isolation like that can kill creativity
He really started the Paisley Park isolation in 1989- years
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Hmmm... I don't know about that. Sometimes isolation can add to creativity. More time to think and put things into perspective. Just my belief. Now as far as 'feeling bad for him', well he's been pretty blessed throughout his lifetime musically, moreso than others, but besides that, I gather he experiences life issues just like every other human being.
With that being said, I moreso 'admire and respect his strength/perseverance' in managing to not allow anyone to pigeon-hole his music or limit his capabilities musically, as well as, his personal right to practice a religion he's comfortable with despite the criticism that he's received, over the years, from some within his fan base.
I do however, think many want to keep his music styles/sounds within the 80s, because that's what they're holding onto/looking to hear instead of embracing his music styles/sounds of the Prince of today; or simply not acknowledging that he's never pigeon-holed his music creatively nor was it ever written in stone that he had to obligate himself to maintaining the same band members from the 80s--I think it's a lot of his fans that try to 'keep him at that place/era' for their own personal reasons. He has always been a musician who experimented with various styles and sounds. He never pigeon-holed his music to the same types (sounds/styles) throughout his music career like other artists have done from back in the day, which is probably why they didn't last as long as Prince. So sometimes I wonder if it is many of his fans limiting/pigeon-holing their expectations of Prince musically.

It's a good question, worth of a thread of its own. Sometimes I do feel Prince has nothing left to write about. But he is such a huge talent that he can still make good music. On Lotusflower I love his guitarplaying more than his songwriting

What do u mean by poor? Subject matter? Sound? Style?

Yeah he is and im sure he knows it
if everyone here did this place wouldn't exist

Yeah but he would because he's still a badass musician/performer.

No, I was answering two posts that stated Prince's isolated lifestyle has prompted an impoverishment of his music. I argued that this isolation began actually a long time ago, and that one can also say that it has caused great music by the man. But the nature of that impoverishment is something the two original posters could explain better.

Actually, maybe they were thinking about Prince having his head in his ass and not looking to what was happening around him, regarding music, culture, etc.

Anyone who listens to music and says they don't know who prince is is ignorant...like him or not..he is an important figure in music history...when I was a teen.I at least knew who the important music makers of the 50s and 60s were....prince is one of the ten biggest names in popular music history...your friends need educating.

I feel bad for him when he wears shirts with his own over-sized image emblazoned on them. That's just....unsettling. When you don't have a case, yell RACE!

I love Prince, but when i sit and think about it, cant say ive ever felt sorry for him, strange but i guess i figure Prince does not want my sympathy nor my worries. Dont think he would liked to be looked at as weak, not that by showing emotion he would be thats just human.
I do wonder sometimes how he feels, is he happy, pleased, sad, angry? whatever ya know. But it often seems that he's been battling himself more than anything else in his life.
Plus he's a millionaire who is gifted beyond beliefs, with many fans/admirers, not 2 mention an influential career thats out-lasted so many others. & also he seems to be incontrol of his lifestyle, and whats on his agenda. He's done so much he's wanted to do (not that these things make everyone happy though) "How Can I Stand To..Stay Where I Am? Poor Butterfly Who..Dont Understand." P
