Prince's songs of the 00's that would make it into your top 50

Regarding Prince's albums, I think the only one of the 00's that can compete with his best material of the 80's is The Rainbow Children.

But what about songs? Don't you think there are some brilliant tunes in the recent albums?

My question is: which songs published in the 00's have the quality to compete with the best tunes Prince wrote in the 80's? I've thought that including them in your potential Top 50 would be enough...

My answer: Black Sweat, Lion Of Judah and Colonized Mind. I'd have doubts with other songs, but I'm sure with the three mentioned.

Interesting topic... I'd have thought there would be many, but I just can't think of all that much!

I like these three a lot too. Last December could even make it into my 50 faves.

Well, without actually taking the time to make a top 50 list, these would definitely make it:

(Listed chronologically)

  1. Last December
  2. The Word
  3. Get On The Boat
  4. Somewhere Here On Earth
  5. Wall Of Berlin
  6. $
  7. Dreamer

Maybe a few others. But I wouldn't say these compete with Prince's 80s material. I don't think it's comparable. These songs sound so drastically different from "If I Was Ur Girlfriend" and "When You Were Mine", etc....

Guitar
I know it's nothing special. It's nothing more than an excuse for Prince to play guitar, but that's exactly the fun of it. guitar

Considering that Prince's catalog is so vast and that I love so much from it, I will limit myself to 7 songs from the decade you asked about, though I do have a few more.

Colonized Mind

The Marrying Kind

A Million Days

Somewhere Here on Earth

3121

Sticky Like Glue

Last December

Honorable mentions:

Black Sweat

Muse 2 the Pharoah

Future Baby Mama

Reflection

When Eye Lay My Hands On You

Back 2 the Lotus

Future Soul Song

I agree that Prince has had some fantastic stuff since the '80s. I am always shocked at how dismissive some of his "fans" are when it comes to his later work. Even the era you cited as his worst had some great songs in there. At the end of the day, I guess it is all subjective.

I agree with those who have mentioned Somewhere Here On Earth. It's among his best ballads.

In my opinion, an album that contains this tune plus Lion Of Judah and Chelsea Rodgers can't be that bad...

Most definitely. Real music from a Real Musician that doesn't sound like everyone else's music, that's the difference. biggrin

I didn't mean your top 50 Prince songs from the 00's, but how many songs from the 00's would be among your 50 all time Prince favourite tunes. wink
