It seemd written to be easy middle of the road catching folks. Thise syrupy lyrics? Goawd. Its as if late 80's Lionel Ritchie wrote them. Plus iirc , Frank Dileo was his manager then, making Prince work the album like Prince was a 9 to 5 everyday Joe, doing Olympics opening, radio, etc. hahah no enimga shit anymore, just get out there and sell this "pleasing" record to "get a hit on the charts boy!" I mean I remeber watching that Special Olympics show and seeing Prince thinking "wtf? How da hell is HE on there?" And the music..oh how uninspiring and SAFE.
Who cares if people loved it? Of course they did. It was shoved down their throats. "Climb in my fur."

"Who cares if people loved it? Of course they did. It was shoved down their throats." Wow that's a lot of disrespect for a very good song. It's a catchy love pop song and it was a huge success. It may not be innovative or groundbreaking but it showed and still does, what a good songwriter Prince is!

I think everything about the song is perfection except for the "D to the I to the A..." etc lyrics. They are stale, which is what happens when you try to add fresh street lingo to a song to be relevant.
But musically, this song is just absolutely phenomenal.

It is not a gpood song. Prince does not mix well with an Aretha Franklin style voice.
Yall like it, fine. But look at where you hear the song. In grocery stores and such. Cream is a much better song even tbhough thats also an "easy" one lol.
These songs were not very inspired. They were created to appeal to a pop audience with no danger to the songs etc. You're okay with that? Cool lol.
The song and project was sooooo simple safe that Prince had to show his ass out of his pants at the MTV awards to give the project and his profile that good ol purple spice again. "Climb in my fur."

Such a great song. 2nd favorite from the album next to Money Don't Matter 2 Night. Very sweet and kind song. Most of the album is pretty bad, but songs like D&P make for it!

Frank must have done his job, cause everyone knew Prince was doing his thing then. This song is sexy, who here pull off the sex he oozes on the title track?
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Hell yeah Dileo did the job. He handled MJ for a decade. He knew his shit and way in the biz.
But you think D&P ooozes sex/sexiness?

Me too.
I adore the song and D&P might be my fave Prince video ever. I just love it. "And When The Groove Is Dead And Gone, You Know That Love Survives, So We Can Rock Forever" RIP MJ
"Baby, that was much too fast"...Goodnight dear sweet Prince. I'll love you always

I agree it feels like a MOR syrupy ballad, and I did not like the forced rhythm of the lyrics "this will be the day" or the silly simple cliche rhymes "that you will hear me say/that I will never run away." Its a lot of words just to say "I won't ever leave you"
but...
I kind of grew to like the song. The band plays really well, and the hook is strong. Plus I started to hear it as less of a love song and more of a metaphor for the uneasy relationship with his fans (boy or a girl) and his attempt to make an album full of pop gems that they would all like
It's kind of more interesting seen through that lens, and it kind of worked, because he got popular again for a little while My Legacy

I don`t like it. Really, i think that the best of album is Thunder.

Someone else who thinks similar to me! I remember being so disappointed with this album at the time. Very commercial and, to me, this song epitomises the rest of the album: Prince by numbers for mass market. No risks, no inspiration just middle of the road snoozeville. A downward spiral began

Totally agree. Cringeworthy tune. One of his weakest albums IMO. U could see why he needed a hit though after Graffiti Bridge...

this exactly, i couldnt have said it any better.

I love this song for many reasons. There are parts that could have been left out, but it's Prince. I expect the unexpected in a Prince song. Also, I LOVED Rosie's voice with Prince. He did some of his best vocal work when she was in the band. He focused heavily on his vocals when Rosie was around.
This song means the most to me because my cat I had had for 17 years (since I was six months old) passed away when this album came out. Afterward, I adopted two cats and named them Diamond and Pearl. No matter where I was every time I said their names, someone would ask if I was a Prince fan. Even my dad once said, that he had to give Prince props because it seemed that everyone knew that song based on reactions to the cats' names.
Sadly Pearl passed away in November 2009 and Diamond passed away in March 2011. The day Diamond passed, VH1 Soul showed the D&P video. I had not seen it in years. It mad me smile and cry. I think of my two wonderful cats every time I hear this song. So, I will always love it. perfection is a fallacy of the imagination...

That version should have been the one on the album. It is a complete masterpiece. Whether Prince set out to have this album a pop hit(which it was)Was accomplished. Frank Dileo did his job. The Arsenio per4mance was one of if not his best live Per4mance ever. The video was well done & gave Prince another top 10 hit. People always complain when he is not making hits & when he did they still complaining. All of U D&P haters
will ALWAYS think of like a "ACT OF GOD"! N another realm. mean of all people who might of been aliens or angels.if found out that wasn't of this earth, would not have been that surprised. R.I.P.

I absolutely LOVE that Special Olympics version. I hate that I cannot find any video of that. I had it on a VHS tape years ago, but that is useless now. None of the Prince video collections that I have purchased on DVD have it. perfection is a fallacy of the imagination...

It's an alright enough song (for my personal taste) but I also enjoy Prince having mass appeal. So what if it's safe? Makes for nice contrast to his edgier stuff. I'd like to think someone fell in love with that song for it's wholesome syrupy sweetness, became a fan and then nearly fainted upon listening to "Sister" for the first time. I do like the song not one of my favourites I must admit. I think part of the reason I like it is that I absolutely LOVE his look in this era..that hair..gorgeous. Would you run to me if somebody hurt you even if that somebody was me?
