Hi,

I was wondering if anyone knew which SLR camera Prince himself has used to take his photos of the crowd at concerts. I am looking into buying one and wondered what he had ? Thanks

He uses a Nikon but I'm not sure which model. Buy a camera for its features and your level of SLR knowledge, not because it's what Prince uses.

This is Prince we're talking about. He probably tours with an entire collection of bodies and lenses and uses sign language to coordinate with a guy who manages them all offstage.

if you can post some good clear shots of the camera i can prolly find out. an example of clear shots would be the video footage from paris outside the venue for all day all night when he drove by in the limo taking shots with the camera. the more and better shots you can post, the easier and quicker it would be to ID

Without a closer shot than what I've seen before, I think it's either a D90, D3000 or 5000 or he may have upgraded to the D7000.

Or he may not own a camera at all, he may have just borrowed the one he has been photographed with.

I doubt that, he likes his photography too much. Of course, it may be possible for one specific picture of him, but I'd bet he has his own gear.

actually comparing it to a video i have from 2009, it looks like it's the D80. you can write off most/all of your other models as they were released after that date

Well, that may be the model he had then, but I didn't know we were restricted to that year. I've seen pics of him taking photos this year IIRC.

if you can provide any photos of the camera used this year i can try and ID it. but he was spotted a few times in 2009 with the camera and photographed with it, so that's usually the one people refer to. he may have upgraded since, but the one i saw looks like the D80 after comparing the other models to a clear pro shot video i have of it

this year i noticed he sent someone onstage at hop park with an ipad2 to take what i presume was video if not facetime

You've got to think he has the top of the line, full frame DSLR etc...probably cost close to $10K or more.

Sounds like we've both got the same one....cooo-el....

he doesn't usually go top of the line. do you see him in maybachs?

if he was a pro photog or serious about it, he might have one, but he just seems to take snaps

i don't know if i have any of the pics saved or not and it's not that big of deal, was just suggesting what it might have been. the important part is someone should research & pick what works for them, not Prince.

Will this be your first DSLR? With my first, I bought a refurb'd D60 and refurb'd kit lenses. Then bought a couple of other new lenses after I knew I wanted to keep pursuing photography. After a couple of years, then upgraded to the D7000 and LOVE it.

I just ran across this comparison between D7000 & D5100. I just skimmed it, but it might give you points to think about when deciding on any body.

Shelling out on a particular top end DSLR just because it's the one Prince has ?

That's waaaaaaay more fammy than is healthy

Do some research, look what's out there and buy what most fits your requirement. Don't just buy it becuase some musician has one.

Its a Nikon D700.

On Nikon rumours last year there was an article about celebrities who use Nikon cameras. There was a picture of Prince using a Nikon DSLR, the picture was of a low resolution, as it had been heavily cropped from a much wider focal length, but you could make out the FX emblem on the camera.

It wasn’t a D3, D3x or a D3s as they have significantly larger bodies. So if it was a Nikon FX DSLR then it would have to be a D700.

I understand, that still doesn't mean she'd know what model of camera it was.

Why point out the 'Gold selling debut' like she had ANYTHING to do with it's selling power? I'll guarantee you that if Prince hadn't wrapped it with his, a few copies would've been sold to family members and some Prince fans, since it is HIS music, not because of her.
