New appreciation for Darling Nikki

It's been a long time since I listened to the P Rain album. For some reason I had Darling Nikki stuck in my head today so I put it on. Holy shit, what an eargasm! Even though I've heard it hundreds of times before, I found an all new appreciation for that song.

Kiss is often the first song some think of when thinking of a minimalist song, but with how absolutely in sync the drum, synth and guitar is, Darling Nikki manipulates space perfectly. But on the flip side, even with how precise it is, it still has the gritty feel of the Dirty Mid era.

I checked princevault.com to see if there was any story behind how this song came to be: written specifically with the movie in mind, inspired by an ex or a creation that came from a jam session, but didn't find anything. I can see this song as the jumping point for future songs like What's My Name? and Da Bang.

I think I have a new favorite on the PR album. I'm sure Tipper Gore would agree.

There was some talk of how it came to be on the 25th Anniversary Edition of Purple Rain DVD. Somewhere in the commentaries. Not a big in depth discussion but enought to fill in the blanks.

When eye go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all heart up in the house but when eye log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

I'd rather fuck Nikki. She sounds like more of a freak.

The whole album is brilliant in my mind and although I have always liked 1999 as a whole more, I think this was P's cutting edge moment, that moment all great artists have when their commercial and creative arcs intersect. Elvis did his best stuff in 54 but the stuff that changed the world was the stuff he did 56-58. Same with P. He may have done better work, pre and post purple rain but Purple Rain was that magic moment where he had the best of all worlds in abundance, great sales, great artistry, great show of continuing growth and the arrival of his live show in full bloom. Everything clicked by this point, florid is always the word I think of when I think of the PR era. Everything he did was rich to the point of gaudy, hell, even his dancing which he could scarcely do 3 years before had become diverse and rich. I watched some riverdancing and it occurred to me that this crazy motherfucker was doing riverdancing to his funk.

The production/engineering on it is sick. It sounds like it was played in an airtight vacume(?).

I'm probably the only person who has skipped over Darling Nikki since 1984-just never was my cup o tea.

Yeah the scream was eyepop but I don't know why I don't like the song when I really want to.
