This has probably been asked before, so forgive me if this is the case, but what is the significance of Paisley in Paisley Park? Is there a place in Minnesota called that? Agreed with rd on that he went for a retro vibe with the song and some others on ATWIAD.

Agreed with ufo on Paisley Park beign a great name for his label...definitely better than somehting like Prince Records or Vagina Music...come on, we know, in spite of his brilliance, what dumbassness this man is capable of.

In an interview from that era he claimed he would explain the meaning of Paisley Park, and that particular line, in a future movie. I think it was in Rolling Stone.

But after the coolness of Controversy, 1999, and Purple Rain ...Paisley Park? Whaaa? I expected someting mysterious or majestic. Or very off the wall. I guess taking it back to the past was what was safe or what would work. I was kind of miffed that he was "stiucking" to this 60's retro steeze.

I don't know if it turned out safe or mainstream because it threw off most all his Purple Rain/1999 fans (all the high schoolers of America) who didn't really feel the hippy retro psychedelic vibe (which was very much in line with Jimi Hendrix as much as The Beatles).

He said he could have made a Purple Rain 2 album, but chose not to. And pop-wise it was a commercial mistake, but artistically it's what drew me and my creative friends in even more. But my more mainstream friends weren't really into it, and they couldn't even be bothered to buy any of his following albums until maybe Batman, and then Diamonds and Pearls.

I was one of those who wanted 1999 part two. I was done with this watered down sound. I wanted the return of Lady Cab Driver not Clara Bow. How the hell is some Paisley Park going to be representative of all the future music of his to come?

I was thinking how that when he states he would rather give people what they need rather than what they wanted..I admit that..well...I wasn't ready for ATWIAD or Parade. Hell, i was aghast at Purple Rain. It was nothing I expected and could not get into it for weeks or months. It took the film for me to love it (and a few videos). I rmemeber getting it at Licorice Pizza and hearing them play it as I purchased trying to plug my ears and being disappointed. Getting the record home and having an impromptu listening party with some people and walking out to the yard after and feeling let down. But i guess in retrospect he did the right thing. I just wanted him to keep going up that trajectory rather then making a quick left, HURRY TURN HERE!

Agreed. How the heck do you follow up the grand SOTT with ...Lovesexy? It's like he didn't even try with that one imho.
