Stuff like this let's me know how much of an asshole Prince is.... mad

Napoleon Complex all the way........

They should change their name to an un-pronounceable symbol & called themselves "The Group Formally Known As The Time"....

الحيوان النادلة ((((|̲̅̅●̲̅̅|̲̅̅=̲̅̅|̲̅̅●̲̅̅|)))) ...AND THAT'S THE WAY THE "TITTY" MILKS IT!

I couldn't agree more smile

While the Time built their reputation for being a badass on stage in studio is another story.

Jimmy Jamm,Terry Lewis while being very good producers and songwriters never wrote anything

remotely close to the :777-9311,The Stick,Get It Up,The Walk,Gigolos Get Lonley Too,Girl,Chocolate.

Prince wrote and played every instrument on these songs.

every song have characteristic epic funk bass line with great hooks.

Prince is the Time

and the Time album without Prince is not the Time.

Um I'm going to disagree. Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis did a lot of great songs/music with Alexander ONeal the SOS band and largely Janet Jackson especially those 1st 3 albums Control Rythm Nation & Janet

OF4S i'm not talking about Jam Lewis outside of the Time

Levis Jam duo are much better producers then Prince and they wrote great songs for other acts(Human League-Human,Janet Jackson...)

but Prince wrote all of those essencial songs for the Time

To me the Time (studio) is Prince's slap pop bass lines combined

with "wall of sound" oberhaim keyboards and funny Morris Day/Prince vocals inter play singing and jokes.

Many people don't even know that many of the

lead vocals is done by Prince.

The funny dialog from the Walk is an example

how many orgers thought that Cloreen Bacon Skin style voice is Morris? But it was Prince actualy.

So i find it strange when people complain about Prince's reactions regarding the art he created.

Prince invented the Time because he wanted

to play longer guitar solos, extended grooves and funk re-wamps.

The Time was Prince's outlet for letting himself loose a bit unlike his official studio albums where he tends to be more disciplined.

The Time live is another story

p.s. we all know that all original members of the Time are very talented individues ,it's just

you know who wrote your favorite jams on the Time records wink

Did Prince get Dez's permission to perform "Cool" live in concert recently? And has he gotten the permission of Wendy and Lisa to play "Sometimes It Snows In April" and "Mountains?" Or I guess maybe those copyrights don't mean anything because...why?

You know what's sad about the entire history of The Time is that on nearly all of their albums, it wasn't even their output. It was Prince all the way and Morris with additional help from Andre Cymone (in the very beginning), Dez Dickerson, Lisa Coleman and Matt Fink. Had Morris and Jesse not left The Time when they did, then maybe their story would've ended differently than it did (and Prince would've sung "Screams of Passion" and "Nothing Compares 2 U" during the Revolution period). I know he owns the music, but does he also own their name? Probably going with Morris Day and the Time would've been better anyways.

those two were co written so i don't think he needs permission but i basically agree, he is a hypocrite when it comes to covers.

And whoever said Prince would not have written those time songs without the time is utterly clueless. That person should stop pretending they know anything about music or Prince because they don't.

The songs on The Time's albums were Prince's anyway. If The Time hadn't been thought of, he'd either put them out himself or kept them in a vault. It's like the Vanity 6 and Apollonia 6 records. Sure The Time were their own band but most of the material was really Prince records and most of the members weren't even asked to contribute to the music because Prince already had finished it.

nod There are examples "out there" of some of the songs as done by Prince. Ain't much different other than Morris copying his vocal track.

I still don't think the whole truth is out about this, though. It just doesn't make a lot of sense.

I'm sure he would see a difference between playing songs that he co-wrote without the permission of his co-writers and other people playing his songs without his permission. That is, if he even remembers that those songs were co-written. And under current law he can play whatever songs he wants, just as everyone else can. But if the law were changed to allow songwriters to block permission to have their songs covered (as Prince claims he wants), it's not clear to me that he would be able to perform the songs he co-wrote with bandmembers without their permission. I'd love to see someone else send Prince a cease and desist letter for a change.

But could anyone have played the Morris Day part as well as Morris Day? Prince could have made some of those songs into hits but he wanted to have a side group and the guys from the Time pulled it off brilliantly. They deserve credit for that. The movie Purple Rain would be almost unwatchable without Morris Day.

True but in a way Prince created the persona/character that became Morris Day as opposed to the Morris Day who had known Prince since they were 15, 16 years old. Sure I give them credit for pulling in tight live shows and we know that the Time by themselves are very multi-talented (Morris has been known to write some nice songs in the past, Jimmy & Terry of course we know how much of geniuses they are, Jesse, Monte, Jellybean, etc.) but the records themselves would've probably been better had Prince allowed them to experiment and arrange them in their own fashion rather than just producing it as a copy and paste thing for Morris and pass it off as a "Time recording" when in essence The Time, What Time Is It? and Ice Cream Castles were just Prince records in essence.

I'd give Prince the benefit of the doubt if it was the first time he pulled some shit. But then I remember how things went down with The Family, or Wendy & Lisa, or internet sites, or Andre Cymone, or Jam & Lewis, or his fan clubs, or Sinead O'Connor, or Ireland, or Jill Jones, or Kevin Smith, or The Guardian, or Rosie Gaines, etc, etc, etc

I agree with all that, but The Time has been performing as The Time for years. Or as Morris Day and The Time. Whatever. And like I said, he's invited Morris and Jerome to perform with him on more than one occasion in the recent past. It just seems rather odd that he would try to stop them from releasing an album of songs they wrote themselves, now, after all of that. I mean, no offense to The Family, but they weren't exactly HUGE on their own, and their album does contain Nothing Compares 2 U. The Time were The Time - they were big. And they've been livin' off of that for 20 years with no issues from Prince. Prince even told Kevin Smith he could use The Time songs, but not his own. shrug Somethin' is stinky about this right now.

They should just release the album for free online.

I doubt they have any plans of actually reuniting to promote this project, especially after reading Jesse Johnson's most recent interview, so why not?

This album wouldn't sell more than 100K.

It shouldn't be about money at this point.

According to the Jesse Johnson interview, the Time are still working on the album and it sounds good to him. I don't think that they will allow anything to stop the LP being put out when THEY get ready to put it out--even if the original members have to go under another name. Maybe they are as perfectionistic as Jesse is. Under any other name, the Time is still THE TIME. BTW Morris can still sang--saw him last year. wink

Very good point.Out of all of the Prince proteges,Morris and the Time were the most distinctive.Prince has even admitted that,in the 80s,he was actually afraid of them and how big they were becoming. He removed them from a few dates on the '1999' tour because he didn't want to be upstaged.

Wasn't that a persona created by watching an older relative of either Morris or Prince? i think it was a brother even older than Duane. I believe at this late stage Prince is being petty, so what the first two records are essentially Prince records, he's an established genius and his hardcore fanbase already know this fact. I can see if it is the 80's and he's protecting a lucrative market share but the coveted demo isn't clamouring for a new release from either act. The Time as well as the Family and associated acts should be opening for him anyway. The Time is an oldies act, and Prince is an oldies act on steroids; he's doing the same thing they want to do only bigger due to his status . What will it hurt? his solid as a rock legacy? his wallet? hell Jimmy and Terry probably have enough to buy everyone involved in this debacle. Morris and the boys seem to have taken on a Frankenstein proportion in the Prince mythology, kick ass band but his aversion and continued treatment of them makes them bigger than they are. As long as he acts this way people are gonna want to talk about it, sign on Prince, do a couple of interviews maybe a song and take it on the road. In the meantime, dont be all morally superior when WB takes a hardline on the parts of his ass they want to retain ownership of.
