Not the same situation. We are talking about The Time!!! The Family had one album, no hits, never toured, and are largely forgotten by history. We keep them alive here because we are involved in all things Prince. I liked them, and hope they sell millions with their next release. But the are NOT in the same conversation as the time. The stand alone. Prince wrote the material. So what? Some of the top bands (Red Hot Chili Peppers, Metallica, Rolling Stones, The Temptations, Pearl Jam) and solo performers (Almost all, including Prince himself) have performed music written by other people. Prince has attempted to reclaim the music at concerts and we have all seen him do his best Morris Day impression complete with Jerome on Mirror. It is just not really the same is it? The Time is a BAND. We knew them individually before we knew the Revolution had names. It was always about a party with these guys. I really wish I knew what was at the bottom of this. It seems Prince is just squatting on the name. Seems like he should take pride in what he created and share in the success. Because when it gets right down to it, of all the projects he started, this is the only one with any lasting success and he seems hell bent on letting it die, if not out right trying to kill it.

I reserve the right to withdraw and disavow all of the above comments should we discover at a latter time that this story is bogus along the lines of the burqa, hip replacement, hair weave, and other assorted tales of riddeldry and buggery concerning our little buddy.

If the album sucks, it will hurt The Time's legacy and Prince doesn't want that too. He's the one who put most of the brushstrokes on that canvas and doesn't need someone else spraypainting it carelessly. And yes the 4th Time album sucked but Prince probably doesn't feel that way.

I agree that "Morris Day and Flyte Tyme" is the way to go.

IIRC, although Prince doesn't/can't own the name 'The Family' - because it's been used by other people not just him - the legal costs of proving this in court would be too much for the group vs a megalomanic Howard Hughes figure like Prince.

What a load of tosh. You think he doesn't want the Time's legacy hurt by releasing a sub-par record, but it's fine to tarnish his own legacy by releasing album after album of repetitious, empty shit?

These threads really do shine a light on those folks who've made a comfy little nest for themselves half way up Prince's colon don't they.

On 8/17/2011 Per: The (TJMS) "Tom Joyner Morning Show " it was reported that Morris Day along with all the other original members of The Time, including Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. Have all written and recorded new material for a new Time release. But, as Billy Sparks once put it -'There's just one problem though'-. The Kid .aka. the artist formally known as .bka. Prince, says he owns the rights and copyrights to The Time. In other words if they want to release any new material they better come up with a new name! Come on Prince 30+ years later and u still have a grudge? This Band was know doubt one of Prince's most successful side projects ever and now u abort them?

I Like The Thyme.

Prince did an interview with a woman at Record World. They talked about whatever, then he asked her: "Does your pubic hair go up to your navel?" At that moment, we thought maybe we shouldn't encourage him to do interviews.

As much as I love The Time... it's just as much P's project as any of theirs, if not more so, since he did write all the songs for their first three albums (with some help from Dez, Lisa and Jesse on a few cuts)... and he wrote about half of the 4th album.

Anyway, I'm sure this whole thing will get figured out.

Can't they use 'Morris Day & The Time'?

Is this seriously happening all over again though? neutral

Exactly. Morris has been touring under this name with a different line-up for over a decade and even doing shows this year. Just use that name and be done with it. This is more trumped up angst over a minor issue and also a way to drum up press for music they obviously aren't in too much of a rush to release! bored

When eye go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all heart up in the house but when eye log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

You know full well nothing you listed is that cut and dry.

Of course.

And for some reason I think wanting use of the bands original names has more to do with legal maneuvering regarding the back catalog than new music. The original albums are classics.

Like everyone's said, no one here cares about what name the bands use, they can release an album under any name and fans would buy it regardless.

So, yes, there is more at play, but also maybe more than the bands themselves let on.

The Time supposedly had this album in the can for years. The problem probably isn't Prince, it's probably that they can't get a record deal to put out the album, especially if Prince isn't involved in the creation.

hmmm according to a Billboard article last year,L.A. Reid is a huge fan and has expressed interest in signing them.I don't think it would be hard for them to get a deal at all.

The Time Reunite For Tour, New Album

by Gary Graff, Detroit | June 07, 2010 11:50 EDT

The members of The Time predict that this will be the year the iconic funk group's original lineup releases its first album since 1990's "Pandemonium."

Bassist and primary producer Terry Lewis tells Billboard.com that the as-yet-untitled set -- which The Time has been working on in earnest since reuniting for the 2008 Grammy Awards -- is "going into mixing," though keyboardist Jimmy "Jam" Harris, who promises that we'll "absolutely hear (the album) this year," cautions that "we probably have a couple more songs in us" before the set is complete.

And frontman Morris Day says that's been the problem -- too much of a good thing. "The album has been done for a long time now, but we keep adding to it," Day notes with a laugh. "So the deal is we've got to stop cutting at some point because it just keeps getting better and better. At some point we have to have the attitude that, OK, there can also be a second and a third project; we don't have to shoot the whole wad on this one. So I think we're gonna stop now; we might do one or two (more) songs, but we're going to go ahead and put this thing out, finally."

The Time is currently unsigned, but Jam says the group is exploring several options and has had plenty of inquiries, including from Island Def Jam's L.A. Reid, who's a big fan. "Our thing is let's get the record done, then we'll find the best home for it," Jam explains. "We want to go with somebody who's a big fan and is really going to appreciate what we're doing." With the 30th anniversary of its first album coming in 2011, the group also has interest in a retrospective and possibly revamping and reissuing its back catalog.

Day says Time fans will be surprised by the new songs, which he describes as "hard to classify. It's got funk and it's got rock. It's cool, sexy music with attitude." Jam adds that the group has "15 songs, and we probably really love 10 of them -- and that varies from day to day as we listen, honestly." Song titles include "Stingy," "Strawberry Lake" and "If I Were Your Man," and some of the material dates back to writing that began after "Pandemonium" was released. "We didn't anticipate we wouldn't make another album for 20 years," Jam explains. "Most of those ideas are still valid ideas."

Jam says the new material "is definitely funky" and promises that "there's definitely going to be some extended jams on there. We've never been into writing three-minute songs. Our three-minute songs always turn into six minutes; there might be three minutes of song and three minutes of a groove and we don't want to lose any of the groove. Some songs we can certainly edit down to single length, but on the album we're going to leave the grooves intact."

The Time -- which also includes guitarist Jesse Johnson, keyboardist Monte Moir, drummer Jellybean Johnson and hype man Jermone Benton -- is in the midst of a four-date Stingy Tour, which recently played in Las Vegas and will bring the band to its longtime stronghold of Detroit on June 11 and a homecoming show on June 13 in Minneapolis. "It's good creative fuel for us to perform live," Jam says, "and then we can get back in the studio and bring that energy with us." Jesse Johnson, meanwhile, will spend the summer touring to promote his latest solo album, "Verbal Penetration Vol. I & II" and plans to open for the Time when it tours in earnest to promote the new album.

Day, who still leads an adjunct of the Time that includes Moir and Johnson, says that The Time's prospects after the album's release are "yet to be revealed."

"We all have busy careers and lives and families and all of that now," he says. "Whether everybody is going to be able to go out there on the road and do this like we used to is questionable. But we're definitely going to put a tour together and drop this music and see where it goes."

Prince created the Time..Prince was/IS The Time to a large extent. Those first two albums are just Prince records...he wrote and recorded all the music and played most all the instruments. He just had Morris follow his vocal track on them. The third album probably wasn't much different.

Those guys are talented but he gave them their careers...or at least the start of them. Then Jam/Lewis and Jesse went on to do some great work, but that was after The Time.

Prince deserves two or three tracks on the album and a cut of the proceeds. If not, he is just giving them charity.

I couldn't agree more smile

While the Time built their reputation for being a badass on stage in studio is another story.

Jimmy Jamm,Terry Lewis while being very good producers and songwriters never wrote anything

remotely close to the :777-9311,The Stick,Get It Up,The Walk,Gigolos Get Lonley Too,Girl,Chocolate.

Prince wrote and played every instrument on these songs.

every song have characteristic epic funk bass line with great hooks.

Prince is the Time

and the Time album without Prince is not the Time.

Um I'm going to disagree. Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis did a lot of great songs/music with Alexander ONeal the SOS band and largely Janet Jackson especially those 1st 3 albums Control Rythm Nation & Janet

I read most of the thread, but I didn't see where this was confirmed. Has it been? Because they perform as The Time pretty regularly and Prince invited Morris and Jerome to perform Time songs with his band at Coachella. This just seems a little off to me.

Many of you can try to justify but how is this not a total dick move to former friends and collaborators? Its become painfully obvious that Prince's best and most profitable work was built on inspiration and sessions with the company he kept in the early and mid-'80s -- The Time, Wendy & Lisa, and members of The Family. A normal human would always be slightly appreciative of that. If this is true, Prince once again comes off as childish, greedy, spiteful, and I like him less and less every year.
