Prince's involvement in "Sugar Walls". Surely one of the best songs he ever gave to someone else. To my ears, it sounds like a Prince composition and performance from top to bottom much like the other shit he gave to people. Yet there is a producer credit given to someone else. Is this common?* I don't pay a lot of attention to assoc. artist credits cuz I already know P did most if not all.
Is the male vocal on "Sugar Walls" actually P? I can't tell. It also sounds like his falsetto is there during some of the choruses.
Even though the song is about a pussy, I still think it's a classic groove that he shoulda kept for himself. Sounds like it would fit right in on ATWIAD.
* This is an attempt to actually discuss the song, not just fact check from DMSR or somethin'.

Yeah it's Prince on the background vocals.
I don't think it would've been good on ATWIAD.

I always thought 'Alexander Nevermind' (a Prince pseudonym) was credited for that song. I agree that everything about that song is pure Prince. That song still jams hard! Good music makes me happy.

For composition, yeah. However, it lists someone else as producer.

^ Prince always used to use a pseudonym as producer...he never lets ANYONE ELSE touch his music! Jamie Starr, Joey Coco, Alexander Nevermind...i could go on....
This info is readily available in many Prince biogs....
This song is 99% Prince apart from the lead vocal of course by Sheena! Even her dance moves are Prince inspired!

Sugar Walls is one of the dopest songs ever! I've always wonder if he was singing on the track too. Especially on the "I feel so live when I'm with you" part....I'm thinking it was him.... الحيوان النادلة ((((|̲̅̅●̲̅̅|̲̅̅=̲̅̅|̲̅̅●̲̅̅|)))) ...AND THAT'S THE WAY THE "TITTY" MILKS IT!

You can tell when you hit play that it's a PRINCE PRODUCTION.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
And yeah Prince provided the background vocals.

You know its like that when I'm pullin out deep cuts.
But seriously!

Lists a "Greg Mathieson" as the producer.

Greg is a real person who has his own albums as well. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

i could actually believe someone else produced it. the sounds on it arent very Princely to me. kinda like when she did "Eternity." that doesn't really sound like a Prince production to me either. Prince composition yes, but not production. the stuff he did for Appolonia 6 album is a lot more obviously produced by Prince.

I absolutely loooooooove that Prince was able to get not one but TWO women to sing odes to their cooters within a year of each other.
I can only imagine how that went down.
"Don't worry, Sheila...I got a song for you to sing about your hey-nanny-nanny, too. Don't feel left out. I'm gonna do that cooch proud."
That man was a goddamn genius in the '80s.

I agree. The production sound more Prince imitated than Prince actually doing it himself. Although it's a good imitation that's just probably close to the demo.

Greg Mathieson produced the album, so that's probably why the wiki entry lists him. I'd always assumed, and never seen stated otherwise that SW was a Prince production. 'The Vault' says so too, just looked. Phew, I thought I was losing it when I saw this thread title

I totally disagree. Have you heard Prince's version of Eternity? Sheena's is almost a direct lift from his. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

yea i love Prince's version. i guess the ba-ba-ba's and the extra synth/orchestral embellishments influenced my initial impression of it. but listening to it again, i think the guitar is definitely him. i'm still not convinced about Sugar Walls tho.

Oddly the guitar on "eternity" lists Freddie "The phantom" and on keyboards Rocker Happyfeller.
But the guitar is definately Prince I feel just by the sound of it, and whilst 2 other keyboard players are listed, Iam sure some of those parts (or dubs) are Prince's hence the silly name credit Rocker Happyfeller LOL. Both have to be him.

The extended mix was remixed by other people too.
I have asked which version was done by prince in the past.
Note the synths and overall instrumentation are slighty altered when you compare the single version to the 12 inch cuts.
You're so glam, every time I see you I wanna slam!

i guess if he didnt produce it he would not show the video before his latest shows.

The background vocal on the chorus portion...I still am having trouble believing that was him....I even switched the speakers to get the left and right channels to mix into a mono state (which cancels out the actual mono portions of the track) and it still doesnt sound liek him.
The track was def. produced by him though. No one makes that Linn Drum sound that funky. Straight Jacket Funk Affair
Album plays and love for vinyl records.

I thought Alexander Nevermind was credited for this song? Also, I know there are male vox on this tracks but never thought they were P.
Unlike Glamourous Life which you can easily tell that P is backing Sheila for the entire song.
Great song from a great time! 1984!!! The greatest live performer of our times was is and always will be Prince.
