If There Was No Jimi Hendrix or James Brown, Would We Have Got The Prince Of 1980-2009? I'm not talking about Prince Rogers Nelson, I'm talkig about Prince, the artist and performer.
I think we all agree that Prince borrowed, or some may say stole a lot from these two. Honestly, I see James Brown more than Jimi. Actually, when I think about it, it looks like Prince admired Jimi looks and admired James antics/moves, and put his Prince edge to it. Every artist has borrowed from another artist, Prince just chose the two greatest in my opinion. Not a bad choice.
I think everyone could see James and Jimi inspirations at the best during the Purple Rain Tour. He even got more James Brown inspirations during the Parade Tour.
But if there were no Jimi or James, would we have had the Prince of 1980-2009?

Good Point....don't forget Little Richard....he also has many other influences like Sly, The Beatles etc...so we would have had him but maybe slightly different stage persona...

Yeah I was going to mention Little Richard, but I didn't want the title to be so long.

That's what music is: an evolution. Musicians and artists are constantly inspired by the ones before them. So of course, Prince wouldn't be the same. Do we know, maybe he could've been better or worse? We have no idea (although, I would lean more towards worse because Jimi and James are fc*king incredible). We don't know the answers to "what if?" questions. We can only wonder.
Quite honestly, I don't even wanna think about it. I like Prince just the way he is. And a world without James Brown AND Jimi Hendrix?!?!?!

I completely agree!
Also I think Santana influenced Prince a lot as a guitarist, I remember hearing Prince talk about him a couple of times before.

When you talk about a genius, you can't put it down to one or two influences.
So with prince, there is alot of inspirations and he uses them all and blends it together to make his own thing..Even miles davis said he saw charlie chaplin in prince..Charlie chaplin??...Seems odd but if another musical master says that, he must have a point.
So princes uses many influences , but so do they all...I mean I was fascinated to learn about Joe tex when looking into james brown. He is obviously not as popular but it is clear to see that Jb maybe even took from him first, in terms of the mike stand moves.
Copying, stealiing...It is inevitable, but aslong as you put your own unique spin on it, then it is never those things

The world NEEDED a James Brown and a Jimi Hendrix.

If there wasn't for those two there would be another two or some artist who would influence young Prince. Prince imitated and still does some of James Brown moves and music but he is more Sly Stone then James ,that's what i hear. Early Prince was more into Santana when it comes to guitar playing, he had that lyrical style. Jimi and James impact on popular music of yesterday, today and tomorow is amazing but if they were never born or never had done music i'm sure Wilson Picket and Freddie King would do the job

Given that James Brown basically invented funk music, no, I don't think we would have seen the Prince of 1980 onward without James Brown. I doubt whether Sly would have become Sly without James Brown either.
Jimi Hendrix was a much greater influence on early Funkadelic in my opinion. The Census Bureau estimates that there are 2,518 American Indians and Alaska Natives currently living in the city of Long Beach.

I agree. | |

I've been on a Jimi Hendrix high for a week. He's got my number two favorite artist spot locked down. I just keep wondering how things would be if he was here...It makes me mad. FUCK!

Agreed.
The only truly original man is the one who invented music itself.

I can imagine what he meant. Chaplin was a composer too, and "Smile" was his megaballad. Also playfullness and sence of self irony define these masters works too. Please read this review of Chaplin's work:

Prince cited Carlos Santana, Sly Stone and Joni Mitchell, among several others, as influences. The Prince As We Know Him may not have existed without Jimi or James, but the alternative may very well have been just as fascinating. Good night, sweet Prince | 7 June 1958 - 21 April 2016

Of course not. | |

After Purple Rain many were quick to compare Prince to Hendrix, though his guitar style certainly resembles Santana more. As for his look at the time, I would say more Little Richard (who obviously influenced Jimi also). Beyond that I would think Prince, like every other successful artist, was influenced by everything exposed to him, consciously or not...

Yeah Prince mentioned to listening to just about everything growing up. It wasn't JUST Hendrix and Brown. Matter of fact most of his songs that do feature guitar either take from Santana or Ernie Isley.

Great question...Prince has already said in the past that James Brown was his biggest influence...and Hendrix in there too.
So let me see...if Prince's biggest influence never existed, would we have gotten the same Prince?
Brilliant question.. | |

Didn't he mention that the Ike & Tina Turner Revue was also a big influence? He also said the same thing of his father and his band.

Without those 2.....this thread would not exist and prince would have gotten his influences from other sources.

I swear this beat remind me of "The Ballad Of Dorothy Parker". The keyboards in particular.
