And I thought I was the only one who thought Musiq's song sucked donkeys!
Was he just having an off nite or is his voice always like that? I've never had a song on a Prince CD that I've skipped over every single time I listen to it...'till now! | |

"it ain't over" is quickly becoming my favorite cd to jam out to... ... (with the exception of musiq's song) it never stops funking... he doesn't let up or break... just keeps that shit pumping strong... and actually, larry graham's bass is my 2nd favorite part of "joy in repitition"... prince's guitar playing makes it for me... then larry graham's bass just makes it that much better... i love the thumb-slapping that he does, and then he keeps sneaking in that distortion- that shit is smooth... i love it when prince introduces him... "hear larry graham play 'joy in repitition'"... then larry gives you a peek of how he can tear that shit up... IMHO, not enough bass players use distortion anymore... larry graham and bootsy collins use to tear that shit up in the past... the only bass player i've seen rock a distorted bass solo in recent years was gene simmons at the last kiss concert in the US in charleston, sc (well, the last one until they reunite again)... he tore that bass up without mercy... that was almost 3 years ago... i miss shit like that... damn larry's bass on Joy is amazing. i mean i am not an xpert as far as the technical side of playing guitar or bass goes... but it sounds fine 2 me... nothing sounds bad. btw...what is bass 'distortion' ? just so i know what the fuck ur on about depues! ***************************************************************************************

I second that. Larry's bass is usually far lower in the mix, and it deserves to be up here for all to hear. Is the problem that it's another playing bass and getting the limelight? Whatever the case, Larry's bass and Prince's guitar are both wonderful in this recording. As far as Musiq goes. Off tune? Life it ain't real funky unless you got that orgPop. | |

I must admit I didn't like "It Ain't Over" too much at first (except Joy in Repetition and Dorothy Parker). But then, one day, I sat down and simply listened to the CD very closely. It was like a revelation - superb stuff.
But I agree about Musiq part - it's the worst one. BUT Peach, Girls & Boys and 2 Nigs United for West Compton (or whatever the title is) and others mentioned I just love it. Too funky!!! ______________

Hmmm, I'm glad I'm not alone on this one...
Don't get me wrong - Prince music is Prince music so gimme it - but after Brendan's wonderful, wonderful review a few months back (see the Prince.Org Homepage) I can't help feeling disappointed by "It Ain't Over!". 'JIR" & "DP", of course, are the SH*T - can't beat 'em. The rest? Too much self-indulgent jamming for me. But I agree - I guess it's different when you're actually AT the Aftershow. | |

I really can't see how Musiq's contribution made the cd-release. It is really so bad. Also here in Europe, Musiq is not very well known! George Clinton's vocals are pretty bad as well, but I have seen him live many times and the man knows how to throw a party...when you're actually there, you hardly notice that he's such a bad vocalist!
Prince should have put Erykah Badu on there, on the Dallas aftershow boot they sound pretty cool together (singing Erykah’s ‘Didn’t Cha Know’). Also, I think JIR is way to overrated! The solo is a mess, no structure whatsoever! | |

--- oh, and the "Everybody in the house, yo make some noise!" Come on man. This ain't no rap concert! --- Um...I didn't know that "everybody in the house, yo make some noise" was reserved solely for rap concerts. I like Musiq (not crazy over him, but I like him). And I much prefer the fact that Prince used his performance from that night on the CD over, lets say, Alicia Keys' performance -which IMO was crap. Musiq came on, performed and left. Alicia Keys came on performed and then tried to hang on the Piano w/Prince. It didn't work. mrdespues said: --- Yeah. I really can't stand the "I'll get someone young and part of the new wave of r&b to perform with me so that the youngsters will think I'm cool and still relevant" thing. I hate that! --- As for this statement, if that is what Prince is trying to do, don't you think he would've used Ms. Keys' performance on the CD instead? | |

I liked Musiq when he 1st came up 2 the scenes, he was just a positive brutha from philly who made a great debut LP. He wasn't too hip but after the 2nd LP I've realized that his ego is getting bigger and bigger and bigger.
He's not much of a vocalist(I've seen him live too and he ain't all that) but he ain't half-bad either. Hell, I'd take my brutha anyday over some Mario, B2K, Jagged Edge, Tank or some thugged ass punks who ain't get no real shit 2 talk about "period". As 4 the "It Ain't Over" I haven't heard becoz I haven't gotten my CD SET yet | |

There needed to be more solos. It got really boring when every "song" was just the same groove for 12 minutes or so. If P has soloed over some of that jamming, it would have been more interesting. | |

His intonation is off, but the vocal is too up front in your face. Sounds like he was devouring the microphone.
Most pros/seasoned singers have mic technique and know how to work the mic. Also his level/volume should have been pulled back and maybe compressed. It definitely stands out as a "misfit" on a Prince and NPG CD. | |
