i don't think tyler meant anything rude. I think people on org are overanylizong everybody's post just to find something to make fan of other orgers.and i don't mind tyler making topics as long as as he have something to say,and i'll take any topic by tyler instead of topics like is prince bald, does prince like cherry.tyler is just a 18 year old kid fascinated with his royal badness,so give him a break .

AGREE!! Heck, I've been coming on here for years just reading and never really posted anything. Some of the topics Tyler has posted made me login and comment on some..topics like the one you mentioned about prince balding and all this garbage is ridiculous.. I enjoy discussing the music! Some people just come on here to talk about what Prince had for dinner! Who cares??!?! I'm a fan of the music and the performer! If you decide to make 200 threads about his music, I'd take that over 1 thread about Prince's "balding" or whatever LOL..

And to elaborate, TBODP is a "tribute" to Sly Stone--in this case the song "Family Affair-- as was 90% of Prince's music from 1986-1987, Wendy and Lisa be damned.

Since this topic went into another direction because of my concern, I will state for the record that I'm black and not colorblind but alert enough to know when the relevence of race is needed. Tyler's comment in the way I read it seemed condescending toward his black friend as though he never heard music before. If that was a misinterpreptation on my part than I will apologize but the comment struck a nerve in me that reminded me of the way whites and other ethnicites would use the phrase " some of my best friends are black " when they would react to an off color joke about blacks, plus it implied that those black friends weren't real friends at all. If my reaction was a bit much, I hope that Tyler and others would that you speak your mind about anything, I'm not an nor ever will be an advocate for censorship, just pause and think for a moment about what you are going to say. If race, sexuality or gender are relevant to the topic, go foward with your thoughts. If said subjects are not, use better words so that nothing is taken out of context or misunderstood.

To me, this is the first true neo-soul record. The instrumets. The vibe.

I played this song for my black friends at a bonfire, and they went crazy. They made me play it all night. One asked me if "The Ballad Of Dorothy Parker" was recorded in the last decade, and I said, "no, 1986", and he looked at me stared for like 5 seconds, and told me to stop lying.

Is this the first true neo-soul song?

Your posts are becoming more and more idiotic son... seriously, 'my black friends' is a silly way of talking. Further still, the term 'black' people fails to take into consideration that there are a variety of cultures where Africans now exist - Jamaica, Guyana, Trinidad, the US, Canada, all over Africa.

You appear to think that music is like a sport where you can compare artists and suggest that there are best singers, best songwriters, best guitarists, etc, etc. If the music or artist or whatever resonates with you, then that's sort of where it all begins and ends. Your posts are silly son.

Finally, the neo-soul movement started in 1995 with D'angelo's Brown Sugar. Prince's music certainly influenced a lot of artists from that movement from D'angelo to Maxwell to Questlove to Raheem DeVaughan to Erykah Badu to Angie Stone. But to think that The Ballad of Dorotthy Parker is the first true neo-soul song is seriously ridiculous!!!! NEO-SOUL - new soul based on old soul.

Damn. A bit harsh, aren't we? lol I agree, a lot of topics, but this is too much...

[Edited 8/9/11 11:53am]

Not it's not too harsh...

TylerDummies posts are silly and his comment about his 'black' friends loving the song he shared with highlights this in further detail.

It's fans like him that make us look like we don't know anything about music and Prince's place in it. It's embarassing

Hmm..you know I thought about that when I read it was one of D'Angelo's favorites by P. I guess I can see how elements of this song could have inspired Neo- Soul, but then again I think alot of 70's jazz/funk (Roy Ayers, Tarika Blue etc.) that also (imo) inspired it.

Good music makes me happy.

do you know the chords to it? any idea how little those have to do with "neo soul"?

"the instruments"? there are usually not any REAL instruments used on "neo soul", let alone the type of bass, drums, lyrics and singing on this classic, unparalled Prince tune.

the "vibe"if anything, that's an insult

This song is JAZZ, but that doesn't fit either as an acurate description. It's simply Prince at his FINEST fusing all kinds of musical styles into a sublime track.

You've missed the point.

The comment had a strange taste to it...

Your example highlights that you don't get where his comment was out of line.
