He didn't seem high at all in the James Brown video. He seemed to be just trying to show off a bit and just got carried away and overdid it. He forgot he was playing for James Brown's audience and not his own...was still somewhat early in his career and he made a mistake.

We have absolutely no factual element to conclude that Prince ever tried coke, not 2 mention a habit, period.

It's no proof in itself that he never did it, but we have no fact, or proof, or even a single witness of him doing it.

i didnt say he was being normal prince. i said he was maybe trying to be overly dramatic in his princely ways, the key words being 'maybe' & 'overly dramatic'. he then possibly overshot his goal. and just so you didnt miss it, the key word there being 'possibly'. on another side of it, this was prince before purple rain. yes he was popular but he wasnt the hugest thing quite yet. he could have flat out been nervous being called out by james brown, and being onstage with him and MJ. i dont care how big you get, your heroes can still make you feel like a nervous little fan. no matter what the issue was, there is just really no evidence there to claim he was coked out. have you ever been around drugged out people?

Patrionising makes you sound like a fool..Just a heads up..So please have constructive responses instead of trying to push your view down someone's throat.

I understand your point but from my point of view I see the opposite..Neither of us will be proved right or wrong necessarily but each view is justified imo. Yes he could have been nervous.completely valid, He looked nervous wen he hugged jb.It was awkward none the less but I still stand by the fact that Prince didn't wana be up there. For whatever reason.

There is no evidence to claim he was or wasn't on drugs obviously..And yes I have been around drugged up people..And they all vary in their actions

now you say there is no evidence? make up your mind. when you a start a thread by claiming in the title that prince had a coke habit you need to expect to get some crap thrown at you!

If you read the op I said that it is all subjective anyway...Hence no evidence.

And my title does not confirm it..It is a QUESTION..I didn't say , ' so the coke habit prince had is no more?'

This thread was a debate on whether he might have been high in that video , if at all at any moment in his career and relating it to today..There is a difference and I personally don't think it is just age and wisdom.

Jeez

Regarding the JB gig, Prince would have done just fine if he was handed a guitar that was IN TUNE. That guitar sounded like it came straight out of Chuck Berry's guitar case.

And if he were ever on drugs, it would have been durring his anorexic tranny looking years of the mid 90's. The only reason I don't think he was is cause drugs tend to help musicians make better music.

This. Pretty obvious that he wasn't doing coke.

the ONE time he did E and had a bad trip, we have at least 2 or 3 sources confirming it, yet not a single person ever witnessed any use of other drugs.

there is a major error in your assumption. maybe he did want to just 'chill' and enjoy the show. maybe he didnt want a spot light thrown on him that night. doesnt mean he was HIGH. just means hes human. is so much of the world high now that you believe everyone has been at some point? some people are capable of being wild and weird, and having fun, without being high.

[Edited 7/31/11 17:29pm]

Prince should have declined that offer. Plus I still think MJ's portion was rehearsed to make Prince look bad.MJ knew exactly what he was doing.

Kcool, your comment makes me wonder if it's true that MJ was super-jealous of Prince back in the day. Was there any truth to that at all?

I usually don't like 2 comment on this. Because of the diehard MJ fans that i respect & plus MJ is not here anymore. But there is evidence that he was. Even his manager Frank Dileo confirmed that the over 50 sold out shows was the result of MJ trying 2 break Prince o2 arena record....

.Prince is more prolific & creative than MJ. So I'm sure he envied that, even though they were "secretly" friends.

Prince definately looked stoned on something during that mini performance with JB's band. You can tell by how he just kinda slinked on stage with his hands all flacid. He was not focused at all and he freakin practically fell off stage. I've always wondered what he was on but since he has never been known as a druggie we will never know for sure. Cocaine would be my guess since it is well documented that both Vanity and his bodyguard Chick were addicted to it and thats who he was hanging with most in those days. I don't see it as a big deal since he obviously has never become addicted to any substance. He was just having some fun. Can u imagine the wild sex he had later? Not that i'd know but I hear sex on coke is quite stimulating.

Prince was either, high or drunk. Watch how he plays guitar, totally out of sinc. Having seen his dirty mind concerts, Prince was more than able to play guitar. Here, he is just totally out of it. I can't believe you can't see it!

You can do drugs without anyone knowing or having people around you who will swear to secrecy..I am just saying, don't assume anything..In grand scheme of things this is irrelevant and not important ( although that is really the prince wears a wig thread).

I found out about the true extent of james brown's problems and in a way it made me admire him more because he shouldn't of gone on that long doing what he did on stage in his condition. It also creates a mystique for me and I just admire the change in personna for the 80 early 90's to now..There is definately a lifestyle change.

But alot more talented artists take drugs than people might think in my opinion. They almost go hand in hand..I said habit not addiction but however long he did it, I would be very surprised if he was still on those things...And that is what I respect from this..That he came through the other side when he could have gone the way of Amy etc

Hey, they're actually more likely than a coke habit.

And just what, pray, makes those 2 things "actually more likely" than a coke habit? There were silos-full of cocaine going around Prince's camp from the getgo. This has been confirmed by band members, tour managers, tour personnel, co-writers, etc. Whether or not Prince partook in any of it is the only mystery and sometimes the mystery is not so mysterious.

He has written about his own alcohol abuse in "The Holy River", has referred to smoking herb in at least 1 song - "Now" (while also mimicking smoking from a bong on the L41A special), and has made references to Ecstacy in "Superfunkycalifragisexy"...

Incidentally, his mention of heroin abuse ("The Love We Make") is the only time he really specifically talked about the ravages of any kind of substance abuse.

Prince couldn't have never done hard drugs and still look like he is in his 30's now.Plus continue to still per4rm over 3 hour shows @ 53, put out almost an album a year since 1978. No! he has always took very good care of himself. Listen to the track "Don't Play Me" from the mega successful independently released 3 disk Crystal Ball project..

You're so boring.

You have zero knowledge about drug use and its effects. You cannot fathom "grey area" or any concepts like that. Prince is either abstinent (your dream) or an abhorrent addict (your nightmare). Here on Earth where the rest of us reside, we all know that drug use isn't always one or the other.

Oh. And "Don't Play Me" wasn't on "the mega successful independently released 3 disk Crystal Ball project".

I know very well first hand about drug use. I have had relatives & friends that were addicts. Plus lost 2 close friends a few years ago to it. I also grew up in the 80's when crack took over LA. Plus work in the drug filled entertainment Industry, witnessed first hand some entertainers under the influence.

U do not know me @ all. So don't try 2 put me in ur little box. I wish u would stop responding to me. U call me boring but ur delusional & show signs of having b-po-ar d-s--d-r. I'm going 2 ask U again nicely. Don't respond to me anymore! Our hateness 4 eachother has already been established here. As U said b4(the only thing U said that makes since) "Don't get urself kicked off this site 4 good".

By the way"The Truth" was a bonus disk included with "The mega successful independently released 3 disk Crystal Ball PROJECT"...

well I was making something of a joke but...

I always think back to Wendy and Lisa saying they were too busy recording, rehearsing and playing to even have a drink back then and think, "well prince was even busier than them...."

Plus drugs being AROUND him is way different to him being ON drugs. Isn't there a story of him being told via a message on his dressing room mirror or a blackboard or something that there were drugs on the purple rain tour and he flipped out?

the 90's are a whole different thing and most of this thread seemed to be about the 80's.

IF Prince was doing so many UPPER drugs as you all seem to assume he probably NOT be here any more...

My brother went through MANY years of drinking, coke and partying and it has taken a huge toll on him.

He is 53 but could easily pass for 63. He has lost most of his hair, his teeth are bad, he is

pudgy, rutty skin , bad skin color....etc etc....

I think Prince gets "High" off his music and the crowds excite him and push him to go.....

Yes, maybe he is guilty of some "Five Hour Engery" drinks or a bit too much caffine.. but I really doubt he was on heavy drugs like Coke.............

I have no doubt he may of tried a bit of weed in his early years as tons of kids did from that time.. but knowing what I know of bad drugs.. I would say NO WAY!!!
