The movie had its heart in the right place but it still sucked big time.

The album definitely has some cool tracks, but the movie's definitely a mess...what was Prince thinking??? Considering it's supposed to be a sequel to Purple Rain...

It reminds me of that bizarre sequel to the first Highlander movie - practically no relation to the first, and was crap.

I guess his talent is not in directing or acting. That makes it enjoyable to watch for his fams, but very few others. Who was he making it for?

It wasn't enjoyable to a fam like me...makes me cringe...big time...I'd be ashamed to show it to anyone...

I think the movie sucked ass big time but the scene where he says something about not being able to see green when there's so much blue gets me everytime. As far as the album, and I may get talked about for this, it is one of my favorites.

It wasn't originally intended by Prince to be "a sequel to Purple Rain", but it was eventually pitched by Prince's representatives as such. It was the only way Warners would give the movie the greenlight.

As for what Prince might have been "thinking" at the time, well, the guy was under a lot of stress and in the middle of a world tour. He suddenly found himself in the unenviable position of having to edit the whole shebang in his hotel room by Betamax - and then he Fedexed the results back to the US for production. A recipe for disaster.

Mind you, this was around the time when Prince was an absolutely nasty piece of work, his ego was totally out of control and would not listen to any good advice. Ultimately, he only had himself to blame for all this mess and it was poetic justice when the movie eventually bombed big time at the box office.

In retrospect "Graffiti Bridge" could never have worked as a movie. Having said that, it would have made one hell of a musical.

It definitely would have been a great musical...listening to them perform the songs live would have been very worthwhile!!

The movie isn't great, but it's a fun watch every now and then. I try to think of it as just a very long music video!

I think the album - without the guest stars - is one of Prince's greatest.

I agree that Prince was far too generous when he allowed so many guests to appear on the album, which kind of diminished its impact somewhat.

The movie, by the way, has no redeeming qualities I can think of!

Waitaminute... Prince's hair did look great.

Wait a minute. I agree with Giotto, his hair was f&*$%^& great.

I actually like this movie. The acting is terrible, but on a whole I feel Prince was still trying to get his point across. He just didn't need to make that point with Graffiti Bridge.

It would have been a wonderful musical.

Alas, hindsight is 20/20.

It's the only way I can listen to the title track and understand why he wrote, arranged and recorded the song. If this was set in the context of stage musical it makes sense (I could understand the song Arrogance being performed in this way too). Otherwise, I find it disappointing to listen through.

Great GB film moments:

1) how the camera pulls back at the end of the flick to the "grafittied" wall covered with words that I suppose are suppose to be profound or sum up the movie or some nutty statement, but you can't make out a damned thing, and you sit on the couch dumbfounded and say, "What the---!?!?!"Even the final moment in the movie is messed up!

2) That wacky Braveheart facial warpaint and curtain he wears on "Elephants and Flowers"! Nutty!

3) That part where he causes a public disturbance on the plywood streets spazing out and lip-syncing to "Tick,Tick,Bang!" only to be properly laughed at, then he acts like a suck about to cry and runs away like Forrest Gump.

4)That part with "Robin Power (if that IS her real name) dances in a strobe light to that awful, awful song! is Prince trying to trip seisures in vunerable audiences?

5) "Geooorgeee!!!Don't do it, man!" As cinematically powerful as that moment when Luke tells the Emperor "Never! I'll never turn to the dark side!",but not!

6) The plywood bridge: damn sturdy lookin', not at all illogically steep! That's some pretty authentic, racy grafitti on there too!

7) The part where Morris Day cements his dignity in film history by urinating on that lovely vegetation. That was very pleasant to watch;"funny", too.

8) When he plays hangman in bed and you can't make out the letters on the paper!

...the performance of "Newpower Generation" was the only good part that comes to mind. Great album, atrocious film (Plan 9 from Paisley Park)

Graffiti Bridge WAS originally gonna be a musical.

He shoulda toured it rather than filmed it.
Like a cross between a Rock Concert & a
Broadway Musical, coulda been groundbreaking stuff.

I never really tried to make it work in my head as a movie. To me it's always been one hell of a music video! A spectacle to be seen, and I honestly mean that in the nicest of ways. The music is some of his best ever, even if written several years earlier.

The Question of U, Elephants & Flowers, We Can Funk, Joy in Repetition, Thieves in the Temple, Still Would Stand All Time... I even like Can't Stop This Feeling I Got, New Power Generation, and Tick, Tick, Bang! That's a total of 9 kick-*** songs. *** all y'all if you don't dig the album. Nothing'll convince me otherwise -- it's awesome.

Some Ok Songs but aside from "Joy In Repetition" not much really stands out for me in hindsight.the Film was like a Bad "Olan Mills" Backdrop IMHO.I understood the Concept but this was Truly not happening IMHO.

I like the album, but the movie, just sucked- big time.
I like the message of the movie, but that was just horrible, I remember when it first came out, I think I was the only one in the movie theater.

Here are some other great moments from that film...

***Prince watches Aura singing "Love Machine" with Morris Day,and he seems impressed. Then,as she and Morris walk past him,he SMILES.But a few seconds later,he is on top of the roof, acting hurt and rejected as he sings "Thieves In The Temple"??

***After performing "Tick Tick Bang",Prince smashes his guitar into a window and runs away.Melody Cool (Mavis) calls out to him,and she sounds like she has a very bad cold.Must be those Minnesota winters...lol...

***The entire "Tick Tick Bang" performance was embarassing to watch.First of all, couldn't Prince have picked a stronger song to battle The Time with? And when he rips off his shirt to reveal his chest with the words "Beat Me" painted on it? Lawd!!

***The scene during "Joy In Repetition" where Prince is shown carrying a drunk Aura out of Morris' house. He's wearing that tacky outfit that just makes you cringe.

***George Clinton is shown in his nightclub performing "We Can Funk".But,the song actually features Prince singing the lead vocals! So,George is really just lip-syncing to Prince's vocals.
