The FAVOURITE, BEST and MOST SUCCESSFUL Prince album debate! My favourite album quite often changes and some will always have a special places in my heart. 1999, for example.
Batman was the first album I bought when I was 11. It used to be a favourite but I just can't get into it anymore. Like DavidEye said, it feels so 80s now. To anyone that disagrees, keep bustin! I didn't care too much for Graffiti Bridge when it first came out. Diamonds & Pearls used to be my favourite, I loved the hoopla surrounding the Gett Off release. I also found the Gold Experience era mesmerising but was somewhat disappointed by the album. What happened to Days Of Wild? That should have been then, not now. Anyhow, I had listened to all of his albums by this point and started especially enjoying the 80s Prince when the mid-late 90s Prince was failing to provide me with any real inspiration. Dirty Mind, 1999, Parade, Lovesexy, Around The World In A Day and Controversy have all been my favourites duirng this period. I even hold Grafitti Bridge in high esteem now. There is Joy In Repition, I guess. And The Rainbow Children is my new testament. That said, I know Purple Rain is his most successful album and it deserves to be. I also know Sign O The Times is his best album and it deserves to be. In my experience, favourites change with time but until Prince releases an equivalent Purple Rain or Sign O The Times, these will remain his most successful and best works. What do you think?  | |

Hmmm, it's kinda funny, nothing will replace the rush of excitement when I first discovered Prince through the Lovesexy album. I'm just thinking that I became a FanFam (don't want to insult anyone) on the supposed cusp of Prince's 80's run of creative brilliance. The release of Batman didn't excite me, or Grafitti Bridge, or Diamonds and Pearls or Symbol or Come! So I suppose I just wanted an adrenaline rush like Lovesexy did and discovering his backcatalogue.
I suppose my favourite is SOTT because the title track is brilliant, Play in the Sunshine is humourous and poppy, Housequake is fantastically funky and TBODP is poetry. Side 2 is killer! | |

There's more than "Joy in Repetition", you crazy loon! "Can't Stop this Feeling I Got" was the rocking-est,energetic opening track since "Let's Go Crazy"! It's light and fun! "New Power Generation" is funky and dancy- it's a cool track, you nutty funker! (The extended version has a good mix, except that opening guitar wail and "Are there really angels goofiness!) "The Question of U" is awsome-what a heavy drum beat, joyful AND meloncoly guitar solo, and neat Victorian organ end- what a cool track! "We Can Funk"- boy does this get cool from the lyric "You can blow the candle ,baby" Very 80's Prince, for the last time! "Melody Cool" is catchy and fun to sing to! "Still Would Stand All Time" has great vocals! This album gets slammed too much around here-it's full of great moments! | |

It doesn't matter what I meant, what matters is that you have recognised what is probably THE most underrated album by Prince. I absolutely love it now for all the reasons you mentioned, especially that We Can Funk moment. But let's not get sidetracked. Pimpy, answer the question please. Sign O The Times is the album i would take on a desert island with me if i was asked to take one Prince disc and i think its his most successful, despite the project not materialising how Prince wanted it to orginally. However i really enjoy Come CD and i think its far more successful as a set of songs than anything he did since the Lovesexy album. Gold though is my favourite Prince album. | |

I love Lovesexy and It is probably the Album I enjoy listening to the most. In terms of his best album I would say SOTT, It is awe inspiring and perhaps his most musically diverse album to date! | |

Sounds like you're saying... Best - Sign O The Times Most 'successful?' (since Lovesexy) - Come Favourite - Gold Successful in terms of the albums that followed Lovesexy and prior to the release of the Come CD. Maybe not in commercial terms but personally it felt like a real Prince album and not some stab at commercialism which everything released during 89-92 was. | |

My brother and I talk about this all the time. There's a big difference between the 3. In the case of Prince I think this is the breakdown.

BEST: SOTT, hopefully he will make something to surpass this - have hope!

Favorite and best is troubling with an artist like Prince..just like the Stones or other atists with so many outstanding releases..this actually hurts ..honest. Thats why I cant vote in top tens etc because it just can't be done. Once you pick one you realize that there's another thats left out that has just as much importance to your fiber that the world would not be comepte without this one song, album , left off the list. Like NPS..I need that as a reference point so to speak..it has gems on it but nobody would pick that over SOTT..but I wouldn't want to live without it even there collecting dust..I may one day want..oh I damn it.This is what I mean by "it hurts".
