So...When's The Last Time You've Listened To '1-800-NEW-FUNK'?

I remember around the time this compilation first came out, I payed [maybe] 30$ for it at a "mom & pop" record shop. I took it home, popped it in the CD player, listened to the whole thing, took it back the next day for a refund & got have of my $ back. I pretty much hated it. Then 4 years ago, I was in another independent record store, & they had it for 2.99 [used]. So, I decided, why not pick it up again? I didn't remember it all that well either. I was older, wiser, & more musically inclined. Why not give it another try? I take it home & listen to the whole thing again, & I realize why I took it back the first time, but this time, I kept it [I only payed 2.99 for it this time, so I wasn't that mad]. I've never listened to it since! It just sits in my closet with all my other CD's.

Did anyone really, really enjoy this compilation? Please express your thoughts about this particular album.....

Love Sign is the only thing I remember on it. I probably haven't listened to the entire album since the week it was released.

I always like Madhouse 17 the best on the compoplation. It was my first exosure to "them". Margie Cox's tune also tickled me from time to time. If not for her pic...i'd'a just swore she was black. While it's not great...if I love U 2nite is a fairley well crafted tune...somewhat assembly line feeling to me....yet enjoyable cuz I was an adolescent in love at the time probably...that skews ALL judgement.

The whole album? Uhh, wow. I'm not sure how late this was released in 94, so I'm going to say there is no way I listened to it after 1995.

What a stupid thread! (no wonder, btw...).

There are fantastic songs on that album. I listened to it a lot. Still do quite often.

Music Review

1-800-New Funk

Okay, let's get this straight. The Artist Formerly Known As Prince will continue to release albums, some of them featuring early, unreleased material, under his former name on his old label, Warner Bros., while (Prince symbol appears here) will unleash his latest creations on his own NPG Records. Under normal circumstances, music is left in the can for good reason. But then, (Prince symbol appears here) isn't exactly average, and neither, thankfully, is Come, the latest album attributed to, simply, Prince.

For one thing, Come (which announces ''Prince 1958-1993'' on its cover) is a light, frothy throwaway, and it's about time. Comprised of undated recordings (probably earlier this year) with a pared-down version of the New Power Generation, it sets aside confusing album concepts and instead re-creates the relaxed, moony-voiced musical pillow talk of his Dirty Mind era. But Come isn't about nostalgia; ''Loose!'' is a sure-handed shot at techno, and the title song, the album's centerpiece, finds him merrily scatting and vamping (''you can always change your underwear'') over a comforter-soft horn arrangement that proves how skilled he's become at intricate arrangements. Prince, or whomever, eventually weirds out as always, from a stark parental-abuse narrative, ''Papa,'' to an exceedingly florid ballad cowritten with Broadway composer David Henry Hwang (M. Butterfly). But its first half shows no one, er, does it better.

(Prince symbol appears here) also makes a few cameos as arranger and writer on 1-800-New Funk, a compilation of artists formerly known as Paisley Park contractees before that label collapsed last fall. The album amounts to unintentional evidence of why the company failed. Except for vets like Mavis Staples, none of the new blood, including his latest protegee, Mayte, distinguish themselves; they could just as well be secretaries and bodyguards at his compound. Knowing what we do about (Prince symbol appears here), they may just be. 1-800-New Funk: C+

I didn't hear this album until maybe 2004/2005 and didn't own it until maybe 2008ish. I still listen to it at least a few times a year. It's not fantastic and it could have been much better but there's some good stuff on it. I guess when you consider the other music that Prince was releasing during this era it is a bit of a disappointment but I'm glad to have these songs.

Nobody mentions MLPS?! That song is a total jam. I also enjoy Love Sign, Standing At The Altar and Color. Even Mayte's song is nice. And what a lucky b**** for having Patti LaBelle, Rosie Gaines, and Margie Cox singing BACKUP on your first major single.

You wanna talk about stupidity ?

The word clueless comes to mind

Apart from a few ok songs

most of what's on Planet Earth , 3121 , and Lotusflow3r pisses all over this weak , uninspired ,

plastic produced drivel , even Musicology does

Hell everything you continuously take pride in criticizing

(which contains about 99.9% of your posts here)does

Well, that's YOUR opinion. Which I don't give a rat's ass about.

I stated MINE. Which you can't change even if you'd love to.

No love for MPLS?!?

I love that song...

17, Standing At The Altar, Love Sign...

Terrific!

Also like Color & A Woman's Gotta Have It.

Not to mention the previously released Clinton & Staples songs.

So, I like most of it... Guess I'm in the minority! biggrin

TRIVIA:

Remember the sticker on the CD that said "All songs Written & Arranged By prince "?

Not true. A Woman's Gotta Have It is by Bobby Womack.

Not dead, not in prison, still funkin'...

Years ago I remember being somewhere when some homeless looking dude walked up to me with a box and said "CDs for sale, one dollar" I looked inside and they were all sealed copies of this album. After giving him the side eye, I said "Um, no thanks " lol

That's a shame, because $1 is all this cd is worth.

i don't think i've listened to it since the day it came out cuz i have the promo cd single of lovesign which has the videomix with intro (i have an in house vhs of lovesign too), and i have the cd single of standing at the alter, and perfect bootlegs of madhouse 24 and theres the 12" of mpls and video, and i have the albums all the other stuff was on, so no need to play the compilation really

That explains the homeless person trying to sell it to me on the street. He probably found the bunch in the waste bin in back of the record store wink
