Because the people who pay that much money for a book know what an outrageous ripoff those Opus prices were. That kind of price is what people pay for handmade art books, typeset on a letterpress by master craftsmen, with tipped in woodcuts. They might have been able to get $1000 for the Opus books if the photographer had been especially famous or if Prince personally signed them.
