What PRINCE does on his day off - Yep he pop's in a London Shop to buy CD's

Prince spotted in Berwick Street - Purple Rain superstar drops in to buy CDs and DVDs in Soho record shops

American superstar Prince spotted on Berwick Street (inset)

HE may be small but he’s not easily missed, and even the most hardened music fans were left speechless when Prince dropped into Soho for a spot of record shopping.

The purple one stunned staff at Sounds of the Universe in Broadwick Street as he walked down the stairs into the store on Monday afternoon.

Nicole McKenzie, who served the Purple Rain star, said: “I was a bit shocked. I thought he might be a lookalike and when he came towards me I saw it was Prince.

“He was very low key, just with another guy. He bought four DVDs, including The Gospel according to Al Green, Curtis Mayfield and the Impressions, and the night James Brown played Boston. They are quite hard to get in London.”

She added: “He didn’t really say much, he just wanted some concert CDs. He was just wearing black, very polite, looked nice, said please and thank you, I was just very pleased to see him.”

And just around the corner in Berwick Street, Prince took his time browsing the collection at Sister Ray.

Owner Phil Barton said: “He bought Jimi Hendrix, Sly and the Family Stone and a bunch of funk albums. His limo was outside. He was in the shop for about 20 or 30 minutes and everyone gave him his space.

“He slipped out of the shop and one of his people came back in and bought them.”

And Prince was not the only superstar to have popped in recently.

Mr Barton added: “Charlie Watts from the Rolling Stones came in on Sunday and bought a £90 jazz album.”

I wanted to buy some Prince concert DVDs but hey, what do you know... there aren't any sad

What'll he do when the artists he likes only release albums through a tabloid/internet site? Bittorrent them probably.

Sorry for the morning sarcasm. He's made me this way.

Always. Limited/fancy editions if possible. Have you tried looking over a digital collection? Boring. And in years to come, where are the memories?

Hard to do a line on an mp3 as well.

Surely if you were this wealthy and your love of music so great you'd have tens of thousands of cds neatly stacked? I know I would as would most people I know. Very odd. Just a "to be seen" moment I reckon.

I think he might just enjoy the pleasure of shopping. The wrekka stores in Berwick St are cool & you can get some rare & unusual stuff.

I wonder if he looked himself up? There's the old picture disks from the 80s and even some bootleg CDs & Vinyl (of outtakes/concerts - not official release).

We all know P doesn't like the internet so he puts his money where his mouth is and supports record stores. Keep up the good work!

He is putting his money out there to back up his comments about the poor sound quality of digital music. In addition, he is supporting a small record shop.

Those of us that enjoy good sound and like shopping do still buy CDs. I will keep buying them until they are no longer manufactured.

It would've been cooler if he'd been buying vinyl. shrug
