Prince ordered to pay over $700K to former lawyers after failing to pay fees

Prince may become a pauper after being ordered this month to pay his former lawyers over $700,000, according to court documents.

The purple-cloaked king of pop failed to respond to a March suit filed by his former lawyers who claimed he stiffed them on fees, records show.

So a Manhattan judge on July 15 ordered Prince to shell out $708,687 to Patterson Belknap Webb & Tyler plus 9% interest dating back to 2008.

The Manhattan Supreme Court case says Prince, whose name is Prince Rogers Nelson, paid only $125,000 of the bill.

The legal team helped Prince during his divorce, and when a New York perfume company sued him for failing to promote a "sexy scent" in a purple box as promised.

They also represented him for canceled concerts in Dublin and California. Prince was also sued in 2006 for adding too much purple to the Hollywood pad he was renting for $70,000 a month from NBA star Carlos Boozer.

The Manhattan-based firm did not return a call for comment.

Prince could not be reached for comment at his Paisley Park Enterprises headquarters in Minnesota.

If there's one thing I'm curious about it's why this guy can't/won't pay his bills. Didn't he donate 1.5-2 million bucks only a few months ago? Apparently he does have enough money.

My guess would be that he has a really skeletal and poorly organised team around him who daren't say 'boo' to him. A real 'emperor's new clothes' set up, and totally bewildering to view from the outside.

In nearly all cases a part was paid. It looks like the payments are done for what's the worth for Prince. So say 125k instead of the billed 250k.

No need for the sycophants to cone to his defense, this seems to be par course for his behavior. Feel free to call him an asshole for not paying his bills one time if at all, this is at six cases this year alone. Here's hoping he puts aside some of his tour profits to get himself current .

No, let's not use his "team" as an excuse. He's just an idiot when it comes to paying people he rightfully owes. Plain and simple. And that's pretty ironic, considering how he wants ALL of his owed money upfront for any damn event he even thinks of participating in. disbelief

Dang, I really feel for the guy and would like to help him out. I think I'll buy a few extra copies of the deluxe edition of 20Ten to give him some support.

The bolded part reads like they sued him because the scent wasn´t really sexy, not just because he didn´t promote it. lol

The continuing problems Prince seems to have with paying his bills reminds me of a Seinfeld episode I actually just saw again yesterday, where George goes to the chiropractor and is upset because he feels he's been overcharged:

George: Well, its 75 bucks. What, am I seeing Sinatra in there? Am I being entertained? I don't understand this. [long pause] I'm only paying half.
Jerry: You can't do that.
George: Why not?
Jerry: He's a doctor. You gotta pay what he says.
George: Oh no, no, no, no, no. I pay what I say.

Word. I think I might pick up some of those deluxe cd remasters of the older material, too. That ought to help him out a little bit... razz

The more things change...

I remember hearing how the guy that shot all the mid 90's videos for Prince (Peach, The Undertaker, The Sacrifice of Victor and all that kind of stuff, not including all the stuff we haven't seen) left Prince's employ in the end because he wasn't getting paid.

Another local video production company that Prince then started using eventually went out of business due to being unable to pay their creditors due to Prince not coughing up the readies.

Not to mention I'm sure there have been more than a few Paisley staffers and even band members over the years who have been stiffed (wasn't the recent Sheila 'fallout' possibly something to do with Prince expecting her to play for free at the drop of a hat or something? I may be way off base here, but somehow doubt it - certainly wouldn't be surprised.)

Boy needs to stop flaunting the cache of working for him, take care of his business and keep a closer eye on the important stuff. Prince may live in "Prince world", but the rest of the world sure as hell doesn't. A little respect for the men and women on the ground that do the daily grind to maintain his image would go a long way. Seemingly humility isn't his strong point, as much as he'd love us to believe it is.

The more they stay the same....

well, as an artist I can relate, money is just a waste of time for me, I hate dealing with it. Whether or not that's the case with him who knows.

Seinfeld quotes are always hilarious. I like the bit just before what you posted:

GEORGE: I was in there for two minutes. He didn't do anything. (Imitating doctor) Touch this, feel that. Seventy-five bucks.

If he would have paid them in a decent time frame, anybody know what he would have owed? I assume around 250k, since he already paid $125k. But to basically waste around a $500k (a half million) sounds crazy!!! eek
