The Truth Vs The Rainbow Children battle of prince's most underrated albums
which one wins? | |

The Truth is a pretty good acoustic album that provides years of enjoyable listening. The Rainbow Children comes with liner notes that, in a bind, could be used in place of toilet paper. So I guess The Truth wins.

This thread could get interesting very quickly. Love tRC. Never could get into The Truth. Prince wanking about with ajn acoustic usually bores the shit out of me.

I'll take them both. | |

I completely agree.
Besides, the paper on the liner is very stiff. No to mention paper cuts and staples.
The Truth wins easy. | |

Wins as underrated album or wins as a better album?
Whatever the case, for me TRC is one of the best albums Prince ever released, complete with the 'Darth Vader mass'.

Ok, given that I'm not always in the mood for acoustic music all the time, I'd say The Rainbow Children simply for the musicianship if nothing else.
I have a solid mental block for the bullshit, so I'm not that bothered by the preachy stuff in TRC at all like many are, however, anybody who will disregard the fact that its a top notch production is lying to themselves and worst of all; lying to ME!

The Rainbow Children is straight up garbage and The Truth is a hard listen but I'd take The Truth because it has some artistic integrity to it, whereas TRC is justa guy trying WAAAY to hard to sound like he's onto something.

Did u just plan on leaving? without wondering why!
I like selected tracks from both... but seems as i like more tracks from TRC that wins!

TRC, clearly
when that album works, it's very good; when it doesn't work, it's weird and irritating, but never dull or boring
The Truth is just dull, boring and uneven; I puked every time I heard Fascination

Hmm, as often as The Rainbow Children is discussed around here I don't think it is accurate to call it an underrated album. Underrated by the general public maybe but that is true of tons of his albums. It's probably his most divisive album. Most people either love it or hate it.
To answer the question I'll take The Truth over The Rainbow Children. The highs on The Rainbow Children are very high but the lows make me want to jam a pencil in my ear. The Truth is consistently good the whole way through.

The Rainbow Children rocks & eye love it!!!! Dave Is Nuttier Than A Can Of Planters Peanuts...(Ottensen)

Okay, I'm just gonna finally say it at the risk of pissing off a lot of people.
If You do NOT like The Rainbow Children or Lovesexy for that matter, you are only a casual Prince fan that could live with just Purple Rain and The Hits/B-sides only.
There, I said it, if you do NOT Like these 2 albums, you do not get Prince, you do not understand Prince. You my friend are truly and only a casual fan.
I feel a whole hell of a lot better. TRC and Lovesexy are among the best albums he's ever done!
They're both concept albums to be listened to in it's entirety. All songs work better as a whole than alone, very cult like albums imho.

Truth has totally gone down in my estimation, I just can't be bothered with it. TRC all the way.

I don't know how anyone can call "The Truth" a masterpiece. I just don't get that. "Animal Kingdom," "Man in a Uniform," and "Fascination"(<--even as catchy as it is) automatically vanquish it from masterpiece territory.
TRC's only low point is "Wedding Feast" which if taken as what it's supposed to be, isn't really all that bad.
TRC is still the best album Prince has done this century. Nothing he's done since comes even close to how great TRC is.

I like 'Man In A Uniform'

I had not played The Truth in a long time, so I gave it a spin today and decided it's pish.

Yeah - I get what you're saying... I had a long time Prince fan over the other day - he had never heard of 'Calhoun Square' or 'My Medallion'. I said something like, "Prince can sing a ton of different styles, but every once in a while something is just a 'Prince song' - these two are 'Prince songs.'"
Oh - and I love Lovesexy and TRC. I do like The Truth - some of the songs better than others - but it's not TRC.... TRC was a concept, new expression, etc.... truly Prince.

Thanks, you do get it and I love that! I understand that it really comes down to personal taste but Prince has givin' us decades of material for us to make a good assumtion of what/who he is and what he's about. TRC and Lovesexy among other albums are truly "Prince", these albums are the epitome of "Prince". That being said, I feel the same way about The Truth. this is very much something he would do and is great because of it, afterall, I think it's the best thing about that Crystal Ball release back in '97.
New Power Soul is a not so great album with a few exceptions that are very "Prince".
I guess the best way to sum up a Prince album is whether it feels inspired or not. It's easier to say bad songs over albums when it comes to him and when that is the case, a bad song is a BAD song. He for the most part keeps things interesting but it's either less or more inspired. ..."holding someone is truly believing"

I like TRC and The Truth but TRC has The Wedding Feast and Darth Vader, there's nothing on The Truth i don't like but when TRC is good it's good! (1+1+1=3, Everlasting Now, Mellow) tough one! Apples and Oranges, to me they're both equal.

Okay, I'm just gonna finally say it at the risk of pissing off one person.
You are full of shit. Steaming piles of shit with chunks of corn in them.
It's silly to say that if someone dooesn't like two albums they are a casual fan. I don't like Diamonds and Pearls but I still listen to it a lot. I find both Lovesexy and The Rainbow Children to be severely flawed but I still listen to them a lot. There's no test that we all have to pass. I buy the albums and listen to them. Some of them I like more than others. I've been with the little guy since I bought Chaos and Disorder in the summer of 1996 and I'm going to be with him until the day I die. Maybe in your eyes I'm not a "true" fan but there is so much more to Prince than two albums.
You know what you are? You're a ribbon bully!
