I stopped caring about new Prince music! I used to get so excited about a Prince album. I'd take it home, smell it, look at it, read the liner notes before listening--I wanted to make the experience last. I would put on headphones and just take in every song. But now, nope! I listen to every song, yawn and move on to other things. It stopped being an event. The excitement is gone. Unless Prince stuns us with some new masterpiece I for one don't care much.
Make an album, wait another two years or three, I don't care, I will just enjoy the old stuff. Fuck it. All you others say Hell Yea!!

I don't think Prince cares about his new music, and that transfers to his audience.

K bye! We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Which albums are you talking about specifically? I agree the last one was meh. But not of all of it is bad, and although its different from his old stuff it does have its own flavor. Rainbow's children had 1+1+1=3 which was a great piece of musical composition. Lotus Flower/ MPLsound had some good jams especially the guitar-only tracks like on it like From The Lotus, ...Back To The Lotus, 77 Beverly Park, and I especially like Better With Time. Although his pop effect is gone he does have more focus on the musical arrangement, I didnt like any of his new stuff untill I realized that. I do however like his slow songs better than his old ones, like Somewhere Here on Earth, The One, Mr Goodnight, and so on. The harmony in his new slow songs are better than before.

I kind of felt this way since musicology. But then the lotusflower title disc hit me very hard and i like every single song on it. In fact, i completely love that album start to finish. So that has given me a lot of hope for future albums. The classics might be few and far between but in the meantime he'll release enough stuff to at least keep us entertained for a while. In the end i always end up listening to the 'bad' stuff too, even if i felt disappointed with it at first. Whatever he releases i'll always be interested in. Lots of songs to put on playlists even if the albums have become very hit and miss. So while i still enjoy his music, i have to agree that his new cds are no longer a real event. Not like they were up to Gold Experience. But that's also to do with a loss of mystique on prince's part, a lot of growing up on our part and a lot of early listening snippets and leaks online, plus free downloads, no decent album artwork or notes, etc etc etc. All of which conspired to make the new prince album the event of the day or the weekend, rather than the event of the year that they were once, a long long time ago in the land of sinaplenty. and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

I still get excited, but sometimes, find myself disappointed. My biggest disappointments over the last 10 or so years have been "Planet Earth" and "20Ten." I could have lived without both of those albums.

Its still a big deal 2 me, but a new Prince album aint never been the "event of the year" at any point in my life, far more exciting things going on. However its something i still & will always look foward 2, i cant dislike what i have yet 2 hear, so i have to hear it first, before i can say "this sucks hard" 20ten was whatever, but Lotus 3 disc-set was enjoyable 4 me "How Can I Stand To..Stay Where I Am? Personally, I made that transition from casual fan to hardcore fan in 1986 with Sign of the Times. For me, that was when I wanted to hear absolutely everything the man had done.
For context sake, I was 15. Sign of the Times touched me on many levels because I was at an age and place where the content was relevant to my life.
Having said that, there are alot of things that dont knock my socks off the way they did when I was 15.
I think part of the cycle of life is you get older, you get more life experience and thusly, you become harder to impress.
With that said, I dont have the same enthusiasm I had for Prince albums as I did when I was 15. But I do go out of my way to get them. I just got back from LA where I spent two nights seeing Prince after seeing him in the bay earlier this year. Seeing him in LA... I was high for two weeks.
These days, I think the secret to life is to stop waiting for other people to impress us... We have to go out and do things that impress ourselves.

Hell, as someone else here said, Prince himself doesn't give a shit about his own new music, so why should the listeners?? He KNEW when his shit kicked ass because a huge part of his show was dedicated to the new music. Now, he's just an old jukebox, still playing the same ol' shit, Vegas-style. Coasting and resting on his laurels. There's nothing wrong with that if you're a veteran such as he, but don't talk about the only music on your mind is the new stuff you do or not liking to do stuff from the past and then doing nothing BUT "hits" and older items.
For the live shows, dial back Shelby and the girls and hire a full-time guitarist, dammit! That's a start.

Smell it? I swear you make my day sometimes freaky,
I've been nuts about Prince for almost 30 years and I still look forward to his new releases. When he puts out something I ain't feeling, I just wait till next time but I've never gone off the deep end like some of y'all so I guess I don't really understand the angst. Prince, in you I found a kindred spirit...Rest In Paradise.

...hhhmmm...in fact, i am VERY excited about what's up next...and i do think he's THE event nowadays...where so many suckers claim to be an artist, but got nothing up their sleeve!
(god, i wish, that new TIME album would come out right now, just 4 an example...not that i wanna say they would need him 2 do it, but it would be no real time album without him...i don't believe it ever comes out, anymore, for whatever reason...it's not the first one vanishing in a vault...may it be princes', morris' or jimmy's safe).
i really don't see where your point is. what do u want it to be?
he's clearly in a mode, where he finally came home in every aspect, musicwise, performancewise and he even does public appearances unlike anything in the 80s or first half of the 90's. when he did all his strange expriments or had his namechange-thing going on because he had to, everybody wanted the 'old' prince. now, he plays lots of his old stuff, does really good records, where he gives that old sound a very positive nod and seems 2 b finally happy with it...everybody jumps on him again - this time, because he's not nasty enough, not inventive enough, not enough what?...hhhmmm.
the last two records were not only a return to his best styles, but a daring way 2 speak out, what's up nowadays, like in 'dreamer, colonized mind, ol'skool company, lavaux, act of god' and so on...
i really gotta say, i was not too happy about N E W S or planet earth(except 4 the song itself, which is STUNNING!) but everything in the last ten years except that album, which was thrown out too fast. BUT 20TEN rules! only one thing: everybody loves me is unnecessary...EVERYBODY KNOWS...lol!
i don't even wanna mention the feeling i get, when i hear 'sticky like glue...but i got 2! DANCE ON!!!

Sometimes, I think that disappointment people feel for Prince is not really about Prince, but its a reflection of their own lives they dont like.

Thats how I look at it.
Granted, there're moments where he'll put a reminder that he still could throw down just to shut people up, but on a larger scale, he seems content with whatever he's releasing.
That being said, I love 20TEN, and it took me a year to really appreciate Lotus. In my case, it takes getting used to in order to fully get into some of his new music, and when I do, I really enjoy it.

I am still as moved by Prince's work today as thirty years ago, but as I've said elsewhere I have different priorities, which create different artistic tastes. Maybe it's not just Prince as much as it is that you've changed or moved in a different direction. Whatever the case, many are still moved and many are not. That, and a dollar, will get you something off McDonald's value meal.

I still get just as excited every release day, because I know what he is capable of. Yes, there is more filler, but with every album, I still know that there will be at least couple of songs to really excite me.
I also think the release methods and internet leakage take the shine off. Nothing beats the feeling of getting your hands on a fresh gatefold vinyl album of brand new material. Like a personal love letter in the post.
If you are still looking for his "return", you will be waiting forever. That ship has sailed. You got old, Prince got old, the internet stripped away the magic of the day.
My kids are the only thing to but a smile on my face everyday. Especially when they tell me how much they like a certain Prince track! .

I still think he's capable of releasing something good, he just needs to get pissed off and angry before composing. At the minute he's just whoring out the goods for some quick, up front cash. And then wondering why his music isn't really setting his fanbase alight.
I don't mind so much as long as we keep getting gems like the 84 Birthday show, Box o Chocs, 4 Lust, etc... These keep me a Prince fan more than a new album release. Sad but true. But you never know, maybe with his next new album... There's always hope! blah blah blah

. . . . child abuse.. . i still look forward to his albums....if lotusflower (single disc) didnt do anything for you then it probably wont happen again....that album was prince's best in 15 years...not perfect but very good... . give it another listen with headphones on and ..if it still aint getting you then its time to bail out... . and squirrel is right...the internet...while making it easier to get music...has probably made it too easy...it has taken a lot of the excitement away from getting a new album in your hands... . i miss it and i am sure a lot of the old skool fans miss it as well but he still makes good music....but it will never be the same as the 80s... . .

Nothing new:
Every album seems to get less interesting, they are either half-good, half-bad, or just OK (at best).
Nothing really exciting or fresh anymore.
We still enjoy the old stuff, right?!!
That's why we are still here Prince 4Ever.
