I don't get excited about a new Prince release anymore. I still buy them on the day of their release out of desperation for something new that sounds decent from someone fairly well known instead of some unknown artist that is so far underground that I feel like I'm the only person in the world listening to them. The new releases usually have some decent stuff on them. Nothing great, by no means, but some decent stuff, especially considering today's standards.
I usually end up listening to a new Prince release nonstop for a few weeks and then it usually goes back in the stack and just sits there until I get the urge to hear it again, which is usually a long time. Prince is one of the only artists that is still around that makes decent music. The few others that are still around such as Ronald Isley and Charlie Wilson are complete sellouts to shit hop and neo stool and an embarassment to what they used to be so that means when it comes to me buying new music, Prince is it, the only one left. I can't just sit and listen to one album over and over and over. I've always liked to play songs from any artist, not just Prince, in the middle of songs by other artists also. Back in the day, there were tons of great new songs by many artists but nowadays, it's strictly Prince and Prince only. That's why when the new wears off, which is usually a few weeks, it goes back on the shelf and I go right back to playing nothing but old music from old artists from the 1970s and 1980s.
I can fully understand why new Prince releases aren't great like they used to be. Just look at the music scene from other artists these days. There's nothing to inspire him. Yeah, he can always listen to music from his childhood heros to get inspiration but there's nothing like being inspired by a thriving current scene that's throwing down hard and nobody throws down anymore. The current music scene is as dull as a Lawrence Welk concert. Prince tries though, I'll give him that but I can't blame him if his music sounds uninspired because there's no music out there these days that is inspiring. And I can always tell when he's been listening to something current (which he doesn't need to do) because we end up getting shit hop influenced stuff like "Laydown" or neo stool influenced stuff like "Incense and Candles". It's like he's throwing something current sounding on each album in a desperate attempt to still be considered "relevant" when in reality, being relevant in today's music scene is an insult rather than an accomplishment. If he really wants to release a great album, he needs to go into the vault and release something that was recorded decades ago so it wouldn't have any elements or influences of today's music whatsoever. I know what you mean. I felt some of it when I got back into Prince fully. like in 2000, that's when I started getting the unreleased stuff.
But there is nothing like that feeling back then on getting a new Prince or protege album or Bside/extended version, Sometimes when I think about it, I can feel a touch of that newness and excitement | |
