Batman is not one of my favorites, but yes I think Batdance and the concept of Gemini, and Prince's recognition of the Joker & Batman as being two sides of the same coin was very insightful.
Musically, Batdance is incredibly creative, like a miniature version of the movie. My Legacy

In my opinion Lovsexy is a pretty solid album. It's one of my favorites by him. I think it was a perfect follow up to the Signs O' Times album and that whole era. Just to have something new, fresh, and different. It just work well to me. Also the tour was banging! One of his best shows in my opinion. I think you have to be on a spiritual/other mindset thing to really be into it. A lot of people from what I have read and seen, are not really spiritual/religious people. That right there, could have a effect on why some don't like it. Also I heard that people couldn't really get with the cover art/how it look, to even enjoy it or buy it. I personally think it has some nice songs on there, "Alphabet St." "Glam Slam" "Lovsexy" "Anna Stesia" "I Wish You Heaven", and plus one of my favorite songs by him, "When 2 R In Love." That's half the album fill with good songs. So, I would say it's a pretty good decent album. Out of all his work, it might not be his best, but I wouldn't go as far as to credit it as a "terrible album" though. [Edited 6/14/11 12:49pm]

I like Batman but I feel that Lovesexy is much more interesting...it's more personal and profound. There's alot of soul-searching and deep thoughts in those songs.Batman,on the other hand,is light and fun.Nothing wrong with that,I just think Lovesexy is much more creative.

I have to admit letting go of being religious ten years ago, the message has less of an effect on me than it did when I used to be a devodted christian. Now it just kind of seems like somebody who lost his way and 'found his way through Jesus' but still confused with what he actually WANTS to be. Straight Jacket Funk Affair

"eye no" I shouldn't take the bait on this post, but I can't help myself because I'm in the camp of "it's one of Prince's greatest CDs". I can totally see how many people would not like the album - from the original one track CD to many of the songs that can be labelled as "too out there". But Lovesexy is simply not for the casual Prince fan. Period. I would definitely tell people interested in Prince to listen to this CD, but not right out of the gate - one has to have heard the CD that came before to "get it".
The reason I think the album works, in general, is that it's a great concept album from start to finish. Nine tracks that stay on topic, so to speak, and does not ramble on endlessly. Also, it's one of those albums that I always hear something new every time I listen to it, which I always find cool.
As for the songs themselves (I won't go thru each one), they are all great - the only one that gets less played for me is "when 2 r in love" but it's because I'm not big on slow songs/ballads in general, however, it's still one of his best slow songs. I'll just say that Anna Stesia is amazing and one of his best songs ever, but love all the songs on the cd.
Finally, I'm probably most attached to both Sign of the Times/Lovesexy because they came out while I was in high school and are the 2 Prince CDs that really pushed me over the edge into complete Prince fandom.

I was not trying to bait. I fully understand concept albums. Abbey road is a concept album and it is a classic therefore the likes of MJ and many others have remade the brilliant songs from it. Nobody has remade the songs from Lovesexy because they are mediocre. Texture and avante garde production can't produce the longing and wistfulness a great song can. The songs on it are just not very good.

I agree. This is definitely one of Prince's most consistent albums. It doesn't feel like a collection of songs thrown together onto an album. It feels like each song truly belongs here. It's a real concept album focusing on religion, sexuality, transcending the physical.Prince had already explored these topics before but on this album,he attempts to tie it all together and make sense of it all. It's an intriguing journey.

another thing: "When 2 R In Love" sounds wildly out of place on 'The Black Album' but it fits perfectly on 'Lovesexy',sandwhiched between the title track and "I Wish U Heaven".

I 'spose it's different strokes for different folks, because that album is the reason why I bought MORE Prince albums. For me, personally, it's an album I could (and DID) play over and over in it's entirety. A lot of songs personally touched me at times when I was both lonely or just fine. The way each song goes into the next, the regal appeal of the synth riffs after Glam Slam--hey, this is my kind of album.
I don't have all the statistics behind it or the entire history behind it like some of the ultra-fans do. All I can say is that this album helped me tap into a side of myself (at that particular time in 2004) that wasn't there before. I'm pretty sure I annoyed a lot of people playing Glam Slam and Eye Wish U Heaven over and over, but I wouldn't stop playing those tracks for anything in this world. The same goes for Eye No and ESPECIALLY, oh ESPECIALLY Anna Stesia. THAT song brought me to tears. That song helped me cope with a very bad relationship.
Still, i suppose what is inspirational to a lot of us might be seen as a weak, strange, etc. thing to everyone else. I can't say I agree with that. Quite honestly, a lot of the synth/electric piano (shoot me 'cause I'm crappy with the instrument terms) reminded me of the music from Final Fantasy six. In any case, I actually did make this kind of my "soundtrack" to my playing of Kingdom Hearts. I'd mute the sound, head to Beast's castle, and fly around to that entire album.
Like someone said pages ago, it's your opinion and we don't know you. There's a lot of different reactions in here because this album means a lot (or not) to us all. Eventually I got over all the tracks being together and found a copy where they were all separate.

dawnboy999 said:[quote]I don't understand the love affair with this album with so many critics and fans labeling it a classic. Besides Alphabet St the melodies are weak and forced not inspired. The production is derivative and not at all original. Princes vocals don't seem passionate and confident and songs like Lovesexy Dance on and Glam slam are some of the worst Prince songs ever put on a heavily promoted album. To me the irony is that for all the hate and sell out accusations of the follow up Batman soundtrack the songs on that album were far superior. Electric Chair ,Trust and Lemon Crush are much better than anything on Lovesexy.[/quote Sadly I'm in agreement-I've always disliked all things lovesexy except When 2 r in love.

I've always felt that Lovesexy was vastly overrated by hardcore Prince fans. To me it is very much inferior to the albums that preceded it. It is also arguably the album where Prince ceased to be cutting edge and started to lose the mainstream audience. I don't think it's terrible by any stretch but it is lacking the creativity of his other '80s albums and the sound of the album is a bit too dense and busy.

His final masterpiece imo.
Batman's okay, but most of the songs feel nondescipt, like he just tossed the thing off when his time would have been better spent on another project.

Ummm......Lovesexy was his last great allbum and was the climax to an incredible run that began in 1980 and ended in 1988. After that, his albums have lacked consistency and real direction. I think his best albums since Lovesexy are Come, The Rainbow Children, and Lotusflower (single disc).

See, I've always considered the accepted wisdom that Prince had an amazing run from 1980-1988 to be a bit of a falsehood. To me it's much more accurate to make the cutoff point 1986. Sign O' the Times was released in 1987 but it was all recorded in 1986. There really are not many outtakes that have surfaced dating from 1987. The Lovesexy material, with the exception of "When 2 R In Love," was recorded in December, 1987/January, 1988. To me 1987, particularly late 1987, is a clean break from the "classic" era. 1983-1986 is what I will always consider to be Prince's absolute peak. There was a creativity and sense of adventure in those years that he was never able to duplicate although 1993-1996 came pretty close.
Maybe someday a switch will flick and I will finally "get" Lovesexy but to me it's clearly a lesser album than what came before and much of what came later. [Edited 6/16/11 3:32am]

In your opinion.
To me there is very little in the Lovesexy album that sounds inspired. It was hastily thrown together and it sounds like it.

I think it was rushed, I think it was inspired though, the story behind the BlackAlbum shelving Blue Monday situation tells me he really was inspired, just rushed.
The Lovesexy era:tour look aftershows definately show he was inspired

I completely agree. The music and the sound never felt on the same level as the rest from that era. Even the production feels less "inspired", more like his music from the 90's. Time has been very kind to most of his 80's work, not so much Lovesexy and especially not his 90's work. Rushed and hastily put together seem like appropriate words on how this album sounds.
