I didn't like either CDs in their entirety. Matter of fact, Scandelous was the only song that I liked. As for Lovesexy...well Alphabet St was ok, at best.

i totally disagree that lovesexy is a terrible album...its plainly not...alphabet street, anna stesia, lovesexy , i wish u heaven are all great prince songs.....it isnt anywhere near sign o the times and i would agree its one of his lesser albums of the 80s...i would say its better than controversy and batman albums...i think you have to remember that it was recorded very quickly...even for prince...it only took a few weeks and i think your can hear it ..

.

i was also going to make a thread asking if anyone thinks lovesexy was slightly over produced ?...there is a wee bit too much going on in some of the tracks for me...i think it would have been better without all the bells and whistles thrown in....but...as i said...its still a very good album and remember ...it was huge here in europe....number one album everywhere...

yes. absolutely. being the first album recorded at Paisley Park, he had too much time and too many toys at his disposal and he overloaded it.

I personally like Lovesexy a lot but i definitely think Batman is superior. Batman is probably one of my top 5 Prince albums and one of the albums that made me a Prince fan. It gets spun a lot more than Lovesexy and I dont understand all the hate Batman gets on here but thats just my opinion.

I seldom comment on Lovesexy since invariably someone will say "oh, you just don't get it". rolleyes

Well, I do "get it"...just not impressed, then or now.

I understand that the album is representative of his mindset during that time and the message he wanted to convey, but I agree with errant and blackbob that it sounds cluttered. I dig Anna Stesia and Alphabet St. but that's about it.

I felt the same about the shows with the cars, basketball hoops and whatnot. It makes for good visuals but the gimmickry is tiresome to me...I just don't need it.

The artsy-fartsy vibe kinda turned me off as well, not to mention the inclusion of the endlessly annoying Ingrid Chavez. It just ain't my thing. shrug

Then there was the one track thing, which I resented because to me it says "I'm gonna force you to see things my way" instead of allowing the ideas you're trying to communicate stand or fall on their own merit.

But hey, for those who enjoy it, I say more power to ya. There's no right or wrong way to percieve art.

The album's message is very powerful and cathartic. Definitely his "I'll make U happy when Ur sad" album

I mean, look at all that anti-drug, peaceful, "love/sex is the answer", "you're not alone", positive, spiritual stuff. Quite possibly his first "religious/spiritual" album...I'm just guessing now, but this album could have been Prince's answer to the sorry state of american society during the late-80s, the apex of the Reagan years and the "greed is good" society...something like the spiritual counterpart of SOTT (which was more political)...who knows...perhaps he felt that the Black Album was NOT the album/message that the 87/88 society needed...

anyway, it's too bad, as I've said earlier, that the production has not aged well...

Batman was a completely different beast, a funk/rock mainstream album based on a film, no more and no less...for many fans his first album with no message (Parade??), just a collection of mainstream songs...

Lovesexy was the antidote to The Black Album. He recorded that album quickly enough to stop WB from releasing TBA, which they were going to do until he "had a funny feeling" about TBA.

I don't understand the love affair with this album with so many critics and fans labeling it a classic. Besides Alphabet St the melodies are weak and forced not inspired. The production is derivative and not at all original. Princes vocals don't seem passionate and confident and songs like Lovesexy Dance on and Glam slam are some of the worst Prince songs ever put on a heavily promoted album. To me the irony is that for all the hate and sell out accusations of the follow up Batman soundtrack the songs on that album were far superior. Electric Chair ,Trust and Lemon Crush are much better than anything on Lovesexy.

I don't see how SOTT the album is more political than Lovesexy. The only real political song on SOTT is the title track, although "Starfish and Coffee" addresses a social issue (intellectual disabilities). On the other hand, Lovesexy has "Dance On" and "Positivity," which both deal with problems of gang violence and socioeconomic disparities. As far as spirituality, SOTT has "The Cross." But most of SOTT is just the usual Prince stuff about love and relationships. It wasn't designed to be a political album.

I can see the majority viewpoint that SOTT is the best Prince album, because it is just so diverse and innovative musically and has so many good songs. But Lovesexy packs quite a punch for just being a single album. I wonder how many copies Lovesexy would have sold if you swapped its cover with the SOTT cover. I think a lot of Prince's young American straight male fans were embarrassed to buy Lovesexy because of its cover (I know I was, but I bought it anyway).

The Census Bureau estimates that there are 2,518 American Indians and Alaska Natives currently living in the city of Long Beach.

To paraphrase someone on some site a long time ago, one person's Lovesexy is another person's Purple Rain or Dirty Mind or Sign "O" the Times or Rainbow Children or New Power Soul. It is the quintessential Prince album that either has all the things one loves about Prince or all the things one hates about Prince. Both the music and the lyrics are "all in," unapologetic, in your face, over the top, and one hundred percent sincere, with the notion that Prince can be completely sincere about one thing today and completely sincere about something else tomorrow. That's not him being hypocritical; that's him constantly searching for his truth (musically and ideologically), experimenting with that truth, and then being willing to question, challenge, modify, and completely change that truth (musically and ideologically) from one album to the next, which is one of the things I love about his work. Additionally, I never perceived his making the album all one track as Prince trying to force something on me or force me to accept the discourse on his terms, but moreso I perceived it as him viewing the album as a holistic thing, like a novel. And while a novel does have chapters, which can be complete thumbnails or moments that embody the essence of the entire novel, one usually engages the chapters of a novel with the notion that each one must be read to understand the novel. Albums have been presented as one, holistic experience, but usually, most often, companies and artists prefer to present singles, which means that one usually does not approach an album as a work constructed as a singular thematic concept. So, by making the album one track, he was attempting to have listeners engage the notion of the album being a holistic creation, articulating a specific theme. And, I understand that can be annoying for some, but I don't think he was doing it to force an idea on listeners but moreso to make listeners more aware that these songs are meant to be understood as specific parts of a specific concept.

*

For me, the music was and is funky, exciting, experimental, and different from what was on radio then and now, mixing the best of where he had been with the best of where he was going. The horns, bass, and guitar work are electrifying, and his vocals present almost every emotion possible: joy, sadness, anger, frustration, revelation. And it is one of the few albums for me where the live show does not lessen my love for the studio version. The energy, passion, and grooves of Lovesexy have never gotten old to me, and I'm one of those few people who also love albums like Musicology, Lotusflow3r/MPLS, and 20TEN.

I think "Eye No" is the only song that's overproduced. There's a powerful message in that song but it was hard to hear it.There's too many horns and voices all struggling to be heard at the same time.

Lovesexy is something like Sgt Pepper. If you were there when it happened it might have been a revelation, but perhaps 20 years later it is not his greatest album.

But it was a culmination of the stylistic and artistic growth that he experienced in the 80's. It was pure Prince, too, not overtly influenced by other genres as, say Around the World or Parade were.

But more than that, it was an attitude and idea that opened my mind more than any other album that he released.

Perhaps not the best collection of songs, but it is an experience.

It's funny because when it came out I was like 10, so initially I didn't like it because, quite frankly, the subject matter was too complex for me at that time. I remember that the only songs I really loved were Alphabet Street and When 2 R in Love. I may have liked I Wish U Heaven a little because Sheila E. was my shero. However, when I became grown and dusted it off for a second listen, I came to regard it as one of his most brilliant albums. I love the honesty he conveys about the process one undergoes when seeking the truth.

The other thing that makes it brilliant is that like the Parade album, Prince was charting new territory. He challenged himself and his listeners to take a musical journey with him. That's what I've always loved about Prince. He was always reinventing himself and showing another layer of his genius.

All the reasons you don't like it are all the reasons I like it!!

Lovesexy often sounds confused, mixed up, erratic, manic, beautiful, serene, and just generally all over the place. And in truth that is absolutely 100% why I like it. The music has integrity as it mirrors the message. Prince is frustrated, confused and unsure.

The music is all Prince, it's all about him, it's about his confusion and he's turned it into a masterpiece of music that's truly expressive and nonformulaic.
