still my number 1 fave over all of the others and the one that made me a fan for life at 12 yrs old. i dont get the negative comments about it, as even after all of this time, it sounds fresh to my ears.
and the comments that some songs sound demo-ish? to me this is one of the "thickest" albums he's ever done in terms of production. there's all kinds of layers and things to discover going on in the background. whether it's effects, musical parts, voices, etc.
song writing quality? i feel like every song is worthy and necessary and that it's just as good as anything he's ever done.
that said, it's Prince. his fans are divided on what's good and bad and have been for eons. like what you like and don't shit on other people for having a different opinion.

As "psychedelic" as Around The World In a Day was said to be, Lovesexy is his true psychedelic masterpiece, intentional or not. Therein lies the problem for some folks, I imagine. Personally, I think it's great. I'm just saying...

I love psychedelia and ATWIAD is the album that really turned me on to Prince, when I was 16 and exposed to little more than The Beatles. Sorry, but I don't hear psychedelia in Lovesexy. Even though I still love ATWIAD, it's brand of psychedelia seems contrived today. The songs still work though, which is why it still sounds so damn good. Let's face it, Prince has been a lot of things, but he's never been a very "good" druggie! "There is two kinds of music, the good, and the bad. I play the good kind."

Lovesexy just might be my most favorite Prince album EVER. It's funky as crap, and once you get past "Eye No" (Prince has a lot of CDs where the first song is a dud. "Compassion", anyone? "Thunder"?) but after that, it's funky town all the way! "Alphabet Street", "Glam Slam", "Anna Stesia", "Dance On" - ("There's a bass guitar in this..."), "Lovesexy" (this song is freakin' PERFECT!) Funky, funky, funk! It slows down after that, but the last three songs are still great! I even LOVE the cover to death! Naked prince surrounded by giant flowers!? Insane! (and therefore, awesome!)
I still remember to this day, in one of our high school classes our teacher wanted us to write the lyrics to a song (I forget the reason) for an assignment. So I chose When 2 R In Love, and she was so disgusted by the raunchy lyrics, to this day it makes me laugh!

PS - the ONLY thing I actually disliked about Lovesexy was the continuous track version he originally released (and of which I purchased.) I realize this has (hallelujah!) since been fixed so it's now nine separate tracks.

When most people talk about Prince's golden age, it's usually Purple Rain (or 1999 or Dirty Mind) through Sign O The Times. For me, the "golden age" ends with the album. Outside of his more recent forays into instrumental music and jazz, I think the formulation of the NPG sound is the last time he really made a new artistic statement. "There is two kinds of music, the good, and the bad. I play the good kind."

IMO Batman is an interesting album conceptually, the way he links the characters to sides of his own personality.
Musically, it's cool, but it feels minimal, and not in the best way. The songs feel underdeveloped, with some exceptions like Vicky Waiting & Trust. My Legacy

I'd extend it through The Gold Experience, but I know not everyone shares my tastes.
I like Lovesexy. The only song that I wouldn't miss is Dance On.

Glad you enjoy it. Prince, in you I found a kindred spirit...Rest In Paradise.

Yeah, I think the concept of the characters could've been used even more on the album - as it is, it is really just a Prince album, not so much a soundtrack to the movie.
RE: Lovesexy - you see more mixed opinions to it these days, where as you wouldn't often see anything but all-out praise really. I think it suffers from a few things, but it's still a really great album and the end of a career chapter.

Lovesexy kind of separated the casual fans from the hard core fans. I know that had happened already to some extent, but Lovesexy had no major hits on the order of Raspberry Beret or Kiss. Seems like most people I knew did not even know anything about it, but the fans were gaga over it. But you are right, as time has passed, the hard core fans have become more mixed in their opinions. Lovesexy is one of his masterpieces IMO. It is unique and creative all at the same time and still funky. Even the less favorites like Glam Slam and Dance On have a unique charm.

Lovesexy was a great album whose dance mixes were even better.
I could've done without the relatively flat mix. I could've done without the lack of separated tracks.
I thought it was representative of what Prince could do if left "alone" in his musical romper room in what was still a new-feeling, post-Revolution context.
Still, the grooves of Eye No, Alphabet St., Dance On and Positivity are killer, dated sounds and all.
I'd love a remastered, tracked version...

Well it took me 10 years to really get this album to be honest with you...I had to read about why he made the album and the whole understanding of what happened previously to appreciate how the songs go together kind of like a story (although When 2 R In Love seems kind of thrown in there..and always have...which indeed it was).
I do agree that Batman album melody wise and songwise are more easily accessible and enjoyable. It was the whole mood of Lovesexy that kind of brings it down...some of it is over produced and dark in parts.
I liekd Lovesexy, but I agree I listen to Batman alot more. Straight Jacket Funk Affair

remixed, remasted and tracked. Some amazing songs that would be even better without the dated sound. Alphabet St. has a naive nonsense feel to it, while it at the same time has lyrics that younger people don't understand, and the bass licks on it are amazing. Overall a great bubblegum pop song that also has some subtle edge to it, that other bubblegum music doesn't have.

Lovesexy has always been one of my favorite albums- it's creatively brilliant, risque & hyperfuturistic - I love it now more than ever. "I Wish U Heaven" is one of my top ten Prince songs- some just don't get this album and love to dog it - I am a dog in love with it.

Again Lovesexy is a great album but Batman is much better its cold, funky, stripped back, its a back to basics album and shows what prince does best and had a great concept (Gemini/Joker/Batman/Vicki/Bruce)

i really do think you had to be there at the time to tru;y appreciate it. It was totally unique, the tour to back it was of course the stuff of ledgend and it formed part of a big new spiritual awakening. As for the album itself, well he created a real one off - it's simply unique.

Batman is absolutely boring to me. So many songs with Prince on auto-pilot. I can't imagine anybody saying: Prince is a genius after listening to this album. It's just too simple and unspecial. [Edited 6/14/11 7:47am]

Yeah and it WORKED The fact remains that Batman is catchy, pleasing to the ear and not muddled in over-production, plus we got the Scandelous Suite, Feel U Up, 200 Balloons and the extended remixes of Batman, Partyman and William Orbit mix of The Future (lets not talk about Sex..which was drivel). Lemon Crush was a dopamine rush. Scandelous was sultry and sexy. Batman is one of his best album closers and The Future was a great funky opener.
I think the album does have it's simplicity lyrically, I still think the music itself was quite experimental hwoever....check the moogs and the samples on Lemon Crush. Trust's gospel like pop/funk, and not to mention Vicki Waiting was an underground hit waiting to be heard! Straight Jacket Funk Affair

Ultimately I would take Batman over over Lovesexy.
Batdance to me is a pop-art masterpiece. Even more so today that when it was released. It has aged incredibly well. The Futute is just top to bottom better than anything on Lovesexy. Electric Chair is great. Scandalous is great too.
Rarely will I put on eiter of these two albums, but to me, song for song, the brilliance of Batdance and The Future put Batman as the better closing of the classic era than Lovesexy.

Lovesexy is a very good album but I dont like Alphabet st, Glam slam and Dance on. 4 me Lovesexy is better than Batman. And I like Arms of orion, its one of his better ballads. I cant understand all the hate that song gets Welcome 2 The Dawn
