Studio Rehab v. No more Recording

After reading posts on here - particularly ones opining that Prince has "lost his creativity" - I'm reminded that Prince, as recently as March 2011, said he's been spending too much time in the studio recording, and was in "rehab" (I believe on the Lopez show). Now Prince is saying he's done recording. Prince hates "digital" music, yet released MPLSound. Prince has retired his hits more times than Jordan and & Favre retired their games, combined.

He's full of contradictions. (Compare two songs on same album -- Space: "I've never been one to hide my feelings...." and Letitgo: "All my life I've kept my feelings deep inside") - it's just what he does.

We can't take stock in what he said about his "recordings." Yes, right now he probably doesn't want to "release" any albums because he feels they'll be pirated - but that's far different than not "recording" in the studio. Same with his whole schtick on the internet - he'll contradict himself in a month. That's Prince. We aren't looking for intellectual honesty - we're looking for good music.

Same ole, same ole. This is the same dude that said he could see himself stepping away from the music scene in his mid-20's. lol He was in "studio rehab" while he was in the middle of creating what turned out to be a 3-disc album, followed by a tour, another album, tour, album, tour, tour, album, Vegas stint, album, tour, album, album, tour......20Ten, tour, etc. The guy is music. He knows it, we know it.

This whole thing is a bit disheartening for me, and anyone else who appreciates Prince's recent work.

The 'Lotusflower' album still gets heavy rotation with me. One of my favorite Prince albums ever, and yes, I'm old school.

I understand what he said about digital audio, and regarding piracy.

He could always go back to analog 2" tape, through analog gear, and release vinyl albums... Then one gets the benefit of analog, and makes it quite a bit more difficult to pirate in this virtual World.

I still play my records.

Just sayin'.

You claim we can't take stock in his comments about his recordings.

I'll take it one further. You can't take stock in ANYTHING he says.

Prince NEVER ever tells the truth about things. Like ever. I'm sure he

believes it in his mind while he's saying (about 50% percent of the time),

but he then just changes his mind.

People are free to change their mind of course. But, with Prince, he's

not just free to do it, he's guaranteed to do it.

I have reading his interviews because it's the same old crap. I read

them anyways cause i'm a fool and love to punish myself. Also, I'm

looking for a miracle with Prince---the truth.

I think he will just always give the opposite - or a more extreme - answer to what you expect. I've seen it so many times in interviews - he dodges the obvious 'correct' answer in favour of a riddle or something unexpected and/or extreme. Christopher Hitchens is infamous for doing this too (though he usuallly makes more coherent points with it). Sometimes it's cool and gets you to see things from a different perspective. But a lot of the time it backfires and he comes across as an egotistical tool. I think it stems from his fear of being labelled...

But yeah, ultimately I agree. Always take everything he says with a big lump of salt.

NOOOOO!! I don't LIKE records. Records will make the piracy even WORSE because they will just download needledrops since most people don't have record players.

He said he was in recording rehab on Lopez but who takes that comment literally? That's just his way of explaining how much he loves music and creating music...at least thats how I interpreted. I guess now he just feels so strongly against the piracy that he will stop what he loves to do the most?

I'm sick of the riddles....

Doesn't really help with piracy though does it. It isn't harder, just longer. Instead of ripping in a few minutes, it takes the length of the album. After that point and somebody hits upload, it's the same difference.

He really shouldn't be so worried abut piracy these days, especially if what I keep reading about the real money being in live shows is true. He should be putting albums out, letting them be on youtube, promoting the crap out of them and then he'll be able to sell more live tickets at a higher price.

RIP sad

I think he will release a new album next year. Because he loves music 2 much. I can't see him retire from studio album releases.

Otherwise he can always make a ''live'' album, with ''new'' songs.. since he like music live more than on a record(well, I agree with that) But it's always nice 2 have a new cd/record or whatever, to just hold the ''real'' thing.

Not nonsense, but don't kid yourself. When Smashing Pumpkins left the game, they dropped a vinyl-exclusive album and though it can be found now with... decent ease, it has never been as easy to find as any of their other albums.

Awkward format = less people know/care = its seeded less = the seeds die.

Prince, if he wanted, could very well challenge piracy of his own content if he went an all analog way. However, he's a hypocritical bitch and will continue to whine and complain he isn't getting Hollywood money by being paid up front or enough to his delight.

speaking of contradictions -- didn't prince say in 1994 or 1995 that he music should be free and he wants to give it away?

"No more recording because people really seemed to like that '84 birthday gig boot I leaked a few months ago. I should just start leaking stuff from the vault, they'll never know where it came from! I'll blame Lisa and Wendy or something." I'm not saying he said this to me or anything, I'm just saying...

I'm just saying...

Then why belabor about everything else. People put so much weight on Prince's interviews you'd think he was a head of state. He's a musician and if he's constantly contradictory it's not a big issue. You expect a degree of conviction and consistency from lawyers, politicians, doctors and law officials. The guy writes songs.

When eye go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all heart up in the house but when eye log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!
