No. I don't see Target ever doing that type of business model with him again. Best Buy still has stock left over from their exclusive deal for Rainbow Children, but they never priced it at 98¢ like Target had to.

So true. I still see lots of copies of Lotus at my local Targets. They are selling it for $4.98.

I think there are still places where Prince could get some good deals stateside:

He sent a (not so great) song (Cause and Effect?) to an independent radio station (either last year or the year before that) as a gesture of good will towards all the non Top 40 stations. I say that to say there are a number of great (and dare I say successful/profitiable) indie labels who would court Prince and get his music out. The only factors would be how much of an Advance he wants up front and how it would be distributed (do you retract your 'internet is dead' statement and allow the indie to work with iTunes on your behalf? do you drop physicals in indie shops and/or pair with a midsize to large indie label that could procure big box distrobution in addition to local indie stores?)

I don't think he's too concerned with the charts (and for the most part most indie labels aren't either - they're more about getting great music out to people who want it), but if he's still interested in releasing music in the states (and I hope he is), this might be a great option.

Deals like this are not only about the albums sold, but also the PR of such a deal with somebody like Prince and that the people who bought the CD at target returned not only with the album but with other things too....

Don`t be naive..if Prince wants it, he can get signed to every label he likes...

There are not that many acts where it is guaranteed that some several 100 000 albums are sold...

At least with some promo he is selling up to 700 000 to 1 000 000 records worldwide...

True NPG Records is an indie label, but I see NPG Records more as a "label". A lot of the times we hear such and such has a "label", but most of the time it's just a "label" in the literal sense of the word. Plenty of artists have "labels" (without one album ever released) but a "label" is nothing without the distribution muscle behind it to move units (physically and digitally) and the "label" NPG Records is wimpy in that regard. Case in point Rainbow Children was released on the "label" NPG Records, but it was Red Line that actually moved units in tandem with the brand name (read: label) NPG Records. NPG Records as a "label" could link up with a REAL indie label (read: one that knows how to conduct business) and do a pressing and distribution deal on a small scale so that revenue streams are realized from record sales and touring (which is where he'd see more money).

I agree with u, but to be honest, Prince feels that he should get paid a HUGE amount of money up front for selling his music and most small distribution labels couldn't afford him (or wouldn't want to invest in him). If you think about it, why would they?

Prince gets bored to easily and doesn't try to properly promote a project at all. The last album I remember him "properly" promoting was Musicology. He was on television, in movie theaters, and touring the US and parts of Canada. All while giving out copies of the cd to each concert goer.

I really think the Lotus project would have worked with Target if he had done a little more television. Nothing really big, but he could have done more than Jay Leno and Tavis Smiley (which has a very small amount of viewers in compairson to what he could be doing). He should have done a lot of the big shows in LA (DWTS, AI, Craig Fergusin, etc.). When Target was running the commercials and had signage up, I could see copies of the cd moving in the stores. However after about 2 weeks, the project was done. So sad.

He was on Jay Leno three times in one week & The Ellen Show which is a pretty huge talk show next to The now defunct Oprah show. eye say that is pretty huge viewerships & enough to push units. LotusFlow3r is now almost gold, which is excellent for a virtually no radio airplay & no hits.

I agree, but the only reason it's almost gold is because it dropped from $13.99 to $4.99 (and $1.29 in some stores).

I just wish he would have hit the primetime circuit in addition to the daytime circuit. With a few "stellar" performances on some of the larger shows, he could have sold more records.

I love P, but for someone that has accomplished so much professionally, he could easily do some type of special with a network in order to push record sales. Nothing against the Africa Channel, but P should be doing a special like Mariah did for her Christmas album and what Beyonce has done for the last few Thanksgivings on ABC. He could get good ratings and sell a lot of records.

There's a slight problem with your math and the logic behind it. There are no guarantees with Prince, except maybe the guarantee that he will become disinterested in a project as soon as his up-front-only deal check has cleared. Everyone knows that by now, save for a handful of outspoken and rose-spectacled goose-steppers.

Although I wouldn't doubt that Prince has burned alot of bridges, he can still sell a shitload of music bundling it with the ticket price of a concert ticket---sure, it wouldn't register on billboard that way anymore like it did with Musicology, but he'd still have a pretty successful album.

He didn't bother doing that with 20Ten.

It seems like he has very little interest in releasing it at this time.

Assuming that this is a gap year, it'll make it all the more sad if he just ends up dropping

another so-so release next year. lol

Although I find his unwilingness to release his material (vault and newly recorded),

through any of the countless methods to do it these days, I also find it

entertaining. lol

IMO, Prince should keep it simple for a future release:,

make a real easy site for download, and he should stop over-pricing (lol, if that is possible for him).

Maybe around 10-15 dollars for an album download incl. a cd copy shipped.

How difficult could that be?????????? confused

IF Prince is in doubt he could just watch what Wendy & Lisa has made, their site is really easy working.

This can't be that difficult. Except it's Prince and many (most?) P-fans have zero trust in a future site,

after those site failures,

the CB fiasco,

the missing licenses for Slaugtherhouse, Chocolate Invasion, was it NPGMusicClub.com (?)

77$ for Lotusflow3r.com........

It's almost as though he has no faith in his own product, the last 3 albums he's been paid up front without the distributor having heard or sold a single note, like it's not as good as my old stuff but as long i get paid who cares, he certainly wouldn't have made as much money if the public had to make thier mind up on whether to buy it or not. I think the next time he release an album properly it'd have to be shit hot to sell any copies, has he still got it in him? has he lost his mojo. Too many yes men. He needs a label to tell him it's shit go away and make it better, like when he was with WB.

IMHO anyway cool

When he was with the WB, he was under contract 2 produce & they cared not if it would sell. Warner Bros. did thier best 2 keep him under command. This is the reason that he choose 2 give a whole lot of "filler" 2 fufill his "contractual obligation" 2 WB. @ the end, when the "contract" expired, WB proceeded to tell him that they owned his name AND his master music copies. Hence his decision 2 become TAFKAP with just a sybol as his name.. he WON the rights 2 his master copies & the use of his birthright....it did not stop WB from allowing other artists (& I say that term loosely, with the exception of Chaka Khan & TLC) 2 "cover" his shit. He's come a long way from For You 2 where he is now, and I personally could care less WHO the hell helps him 2 distribute his music! As long as it reaches me and the other die-hard devoted fans, who cares? My personal pet peeve is CHEATING him out of what he deserves!

As 1 of the "black Guitar Gods", we should all b grateful 2 witness HIS GIFTS. I'm just saying!!!!

Jesus. Have another sip of the kool aid.
