following 'rain' with 'around the world in a day' ?

just wondering...has there been any other examples of an artist releasing an album as different and as uncommercial as '' around the world in a day '' was compared to '' purple rain ''..?....

.

has any other artist had a huge selling album then follow it up with something out of the left field ?..

.

one i can think of was stevie wonder' s secret world of plants album...although that isnt really the same because their was a 4 year gap between his huge album '' songs in the key of life '' and '' plants '' ..

.

prince only left 9 months between purple rain and atwiad....amazing when you think about it now...amazed that warners allowed him to release it so soon....

.

..

Terence Trent D'Arby followed up "Introducing The Hardline........" with "Neither Fish Nor Flesh" which was quite a departure from his first album, it was considered quite a difficult and self indulgent album.

yes..fair enough...but the hardline wasnt a huge album that purple rain was in the states...and '' neither fish nor flesh '' flopped pretty badly i remember..

It wasn't as big as Purple Rain, but Hardline was pretty big nonetheless.

Here's another: Fleetwood Mac followed the massive hit that was Rumours with Tusk, which is nearly as big a left turn as ATWIAD.

loads of folk have

alanis morrisette

radiohead

neil young

lou reed

miles davis

pink floyd

it's not a new concept

whether they meant the follow ups to be flops or not is another thing. sometimes the fame brings madness and they think the world will lap up the next release
