Thing is Prince never committed career suicide, like Neil Young, like Todd Rundgren, etc., he just did what he wanted to do, yeah it was risky because he was in a major label but at the same time, it didn't hurt his reputation.

oh his reputation has certainly taken a denting...you only have to look at the number of people that still think hes known as symbol, still refer to him as teh artist formerly known as the artist formerly known.....hes never really lived down his little tantrum in the late 90s where he became the worlst first multimillionaire Slave who willingly signed his slavoury contract.

Take yourself out of his fanbase for a second and put yourself in general joe publics shoes....Prince pretty much arrived on the scene 1983/84, powerhoused upto 1992, signed a record breaking music deal 1993, wobbled until 1995 by changing his name to a symbol, pretty much denying he was Prince and fell of the radar when he claimed he was a slave stating hed never play Prince 'covers' again. 2007 he shows up in london claiming hes got "too many hits", plays 21 nights of Prince hits at O2 and hasnt be heard from since.

Trickology

All Prince needs is a beating. His band members need to lock the door and fill a pillow bag filled with guitar pedals and just start the walloping. After about 10 minutes of that, Prince will understand how much frustration and stress he has caused everyone who comes into contact with him. Then everyone will want to help him with promoting his projects & getting his ideas to fruition, because he will have the proper attitude to interact with others. I call it "Guitar Pedal Intervention" lol

Hasn't Prince been committing career suicide since ATWIAD? I mean, he's the f-ing come back kid - been up and down more times than I can remember.

I agree there's an element of self-sabotage to his career, and some things if done differently would give more pleasing results for fans - I realise the article is just a promo piece for the book but I think to write about this now is to bolt the gate after the horse has already left the stable. This is Prince's M.O.

If anyone can come back from the mid-90s P.R. mess, they deserve some credit. Prince has got too much material and too varied for the gen. public to absorb, he could never be an MJ or Madonna for long - when did they ever put out instrumental albums, triple albums or band projects etc? He goes way too wide for most.

Having successful tours is pretty much all that artists at his stage in their careers do - if they're lucky.

I can imagine long after he's gone music journalists fauning over compilation box sets of the lost years, and saying what lost masterpieces TRC or TGE are, and how great they themselves are for recognising it.

If I wasn't such a lady, I'd tall the author what I think of him thinking for me. I am grown-ass woman and have been making up my own mind, earing and spending my own money my way and on what I want. Now if he wants to pay my bills.......Naw, I still would do me.

If you look at it from another point of view, you could call Prince's career "The Art of Career Survival!" wink
