I think time has been kind of UTCM actually. At the time I'm sure it was a big "WTF!", but I think despite bad acting and plot holes up the wazoo it's intention comes across very well, it's funny - both intentionally and unintentionally and visually it's still quite a treat even if that's only to see Prince at this stage in his career.

Now Graffiti Bridge is another matter, all the same can be said for that, except the original concept of the movie is as borked as the final production. It's funny how in all of Prince's movies he plays a self-absorbed fantasist who is his own worst enemy.

BTW, there was this exact same thread just yesterday - tsk!

I actually love it (when I find Purple Rain quite boring and poorly directed save the musical sequences). UTCM is childish, sure, but it's a lovely romantic comedy if u get in2 it. I guess I must have showed it to most of my (non Prince fans) girlfriends and they all liked it: a girl's movie maybe? lol

Graffiti Bridge, well... it's such an oddity that I love it just 4 being so weird lol

I don't like the film, but I would say that Guffiti Turd is more unwatchable that Under The Open Sewer.

I find it enjoyable, a lot of fun, okay the acting is dreadful and its clearly a vanity film, with Prince drowning in his own ego, but thats what makes it remarkable. Tricky and Christopher, imply so much down low homosexuality in it too, thats always a laugh. The acting is cartoonish and scenery tacky, but its not crap, its overall quite a good movie.

Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

I love this comedy a lot... heart

I watched it several times at theaters back in '86 in Copenhagen.

The music is fantastic - the movie is stylish and funny, the story is extremely thin though,

but I still like it. wink

And for the fact it's balc & white added to it more than taken away. I love it, I was a little skeptical at first but I was still open-minded and loved Prince's funny side biggrin Really shown a lot.

I had recently sat down my fiance' to watch this with me and the family and they enjoyed the film more so than Purple Rain, and that was a shocker to me! They're remote Prince admirers thanks to me, so that really made me smile. They were like "Looks like Prince is more himself and comfortable in this part than in Purple Rain". They were 1st time watchers.

Yes, at 19, I finally saw the Revolution, a legendary band. And I talked to Wendy!!! biggrin In addition to seeing Prince, I have now lived life. Thank you Purple People!!

It's not high art by any means, but it has its moments. The cinematography in particular is impressive. Then of course is the music...that awesome music.

Now GB...THAT is f'n unwatchable. The great music couldn't even save that one.

This opened in my small town. I was psyched, because it was huge screen.

I knew PR fans would hate it. I saw it twice in the theatre. It was dumped

by the cinema after the first weekend.

I like it

Prince was relaxed, joking around and being silly. It's something we've rarely seen in 30 + years. I can totally picture this was the Morris Day character from the Time albums.

PR is exciting non stop, a partial reality into the 1979-1984 Prince

great movie .. great theme .. bad acting at the beginning but purple rain was the same .. cool mountains vid and extended mountains .. great music all the way thru .. love or money .. money always wins .. graffiti bridge also good except the very end .. see it as wizard of oz or just a positive showcase of the graffiti bridge music and its pretty good .. not really a movie with a real plot tho .. just a bunch of vids or perhaps like going to see a musical .. they should take gb to broadway .. i highly recommend under the cherry moon to anyone who hasn't seen it .. its worth it just for kristin scott thomas (did i get that name right?)

Purple rain has an actual story, and one that is in the vein of Karate Kid or 8 Mile. A classic formula.

The other two movies don't really have an effective story that builds.

That's why they failed to hit, even moderately.

I think UTCM has a decent premise, it's almost the same as Dirty Rotten Scoundrels with Michael Cain and Steve Martin.

GB on the hand, well!...... lol OK, the battle of the bands thing makes sense, but the spiritual stuff is pure Prince at his most masturbatory and insular.

It has a promising premise, and then what seems like the most basic first outline of a plot that was then fleshed into a script without first really building out and enforcing the plot for effectiveness. In a movie like Scoundrels, they have tweaked the actions and characters to great effectiveness!

I think Under the Cherry Moon could be rewritten at least 5 times with readings to make sure it was cool! But hell if prince would do that! I think he put his movies together just like he makes albums. A somewhat improvised pastiche into a vague dramatic progression.

Purple rain had some stronger outside guiding hands to shape the story and editing. Prince didn't have the power yet to try thing exactly like he wanted or as fast as he wanted.

With Prince as the ghost of Christopher Tracy.

Interesting tidbit: Wikipedia's entry for UTCM currently has an empty section under 'Plot' giggle
