New boot: Prince (& The NPG) - Exodus V.2 (NPR Records - NPR-P044)

Haven't heard anyone talk about this, so I tought I'll start a thread about it.

I'm quoting:

Prince (& The NPG) - Exodus V.2

DFB released the first configuration of this 1995 album, now here's NPR with the second configuration.

Sourced from a cd that was due to be presented to Warner Brothers before Prince changed his mind and recorded some new songs for the version he released as a member of The New Power Generation under the name Tora Tora.

1 CD
Label : NPR Records
Catalogue : NPR-P044
Disc Length : 65:12
Source : Studio Recordings/Alternate Album Config
Sound Quality : EX+
Year Of Release : 2011

2nd December 1994 Configuration c/o Shane Keller for presentation to WB.

1. NPG Operator (Segue)
2. Get Wild
3. Slave 2 The System - Acknowledge Me
4. Super Hero
5. Count (Segue)
6. Count The Days
7. Sonny (Segue)
8. DJ Gets Jumped (Segue)
9. New Power Soul
10. Mad
11. Love... Thy Will Be Done
12. Funky
13. Proud Mary*
14. NPG Bum Rush The Ship (Segue)
15. The Exodus Has Begun
16. The Funky Design

Written, Produced & Performed by The New Power Generation (except*)

Sonny T. - Vox, Bass Guitar
Tora Tora - (Prince credited for) Double Bass, Vox, Other Shit
Michael B. - Drums and Vox
Tommy Barbarella - Piano, Purpleaxxe, Vox
Mr. Hayes - Organ, Synths, Vox
Mayte - Backing Vox, "Spanish vibe and hallucinations"

*Derick Hughes - Lead Vox on "Proud Mary"

Not meant as a replacement for "The Exodus Has Begun" but made available after eight years for completion for those of you that want the best quality versions of all the different versions of one of the best Prince albums of his career (even though he hands most of the vox over to Sonny T, it's still) a very funky album to have in your collection!

Haven't listened to it yet, and probably won't for another ten hours or so (like anyone else), but it's nice to see this out there. Wondering if this improves on the quality of the boot "New Power Soul" on the label "New Power Zounds".

(Heh, Rudedog Records also released something similar, I see.)

it's the best quality of these sessions, better than the ancient newpowerzounds "newpowersoul" boot from back in the day. it's not quite as good as the DFB version. it sounds like it's a composite rather than a straight copy of an in house cd as the tracks don't seem to run into each other perfectly

i prefer the DFB tracklisting, but there are a load of great tracks on this too

Still grabbing but if it's just the Nth compilation of Exodus tracks instead of a proper unreleased cd then I'm not exactly eager for a listen. Been there done that x 1000.

It does say

Sourced from a cd that was due to be presented to Warner Brothers

Perhaps this was an unmastered, unfinished "temp" CD. (Though ending with "The Funky Design" seems a bit odd to me.)

I really wish people wouldn't use zshare when there are so many better alternatives. It's slow as fuck.

it sounds more like it's been taken from a tape, maybe minidisc as it's not as clear sounding if you compare it to the released cd or even the DFB version, and some of the tracks just don't flow at all. it sounds like a cut and paste job. get wild sounds like it's fading. the end of proud mary has clicking on it like it's came from a cdr badly burned or with scratches. a few tracks just stop and the next track doesn't follow on properly sequentially. it's like they've got part of the talked about cd, but not the whole lot, and padded the rest together from other sources so the seques might not be the right ones, or the exact versions of tracks

^thanks for your review.

Now even the completist part of me is thinking of forgetting about this release. I can take well done cut&pastes but I can't stand unchecked and badly assembled jobs.

the funky/love/proud melody is the most complete and best sounding version around, even with the clicking (which isn't THAT bad but it's a shame). the NPS NPZ version was cut short and i think work it 2.0 doesn't have the full end segue part

so whilst it sounds cut and paste it's the best compilation of that config so far, so worth getting

i'm going to compile an ultimate exodus using all the tracks from both versions plus the released version and some other stuff, so it'll be a 2 disc length affair

^^Well, I think I've lost account of all the Exodus era compilations I have but then I will have to grab this one and the one you are considering if you share it.

It's unreleased. Though it is a cover version, this may be what you are thinking of.

yeah but this is better sounding and more complete. i think it was H20 that had had the better quality sound (before work it 2.0)

the release is free and literally takes 5 mins to download if you have a decent connection, so just download it and give it a bash. it's not that bad, it's just not as good as the other version, but has some great stuff in the best quality available to date

it just doesn't sound like it's taken direct from cd, the sleevenotes don't say it has either, whilst the previous version makes it sound like the used a direct cd. it sounds like they took the idea/tracklist and peiced this together with the best available sources

Yeah, there's AT LEAST one other that I'm aware of. And probably more, since it's been out a few more days now.
