Question for the "Purple Parents"...

I saw an interview that a reporter did with a 10-year-old before one of the LA Forum shows and the kid was totally gushing about Prince and said he was glued to he Lopez Tonight performance. So, for those of you that have (small--i.e. under 18) kids who love Prince, what are their ages, favorite songs and do their friends listen to Prince too? I'm curious about how he's perceived amongst the kiddos these days. smile

Great question. I have 2 sons who have been listening to P since they were in my womb...lol. My oldest is 18 yrs and has seen P 9 times and loves Forever In My Life and our youngest is 14yrs old and loves 17 Days as I used to rock him to sleep to it.

Proud mama:-)

Haha, this is cute! I introduce my nephew (he's 10) to Diamonds & Pearls and he liked it. Man, can you imagine that these songs will be the "oldies" one day? Wow, LOL!

I have three children (ages 18, 16, 14) and they all love Prince. I've taken my 18 year old to see Prince twice (Dec 2010, March 2011) and the other two saw him once each (Dec 2010). My 18 year old loves to listen to the rock side of Prince, though he loves basically all his music. His faves are Endorphinemachine, Bambi, Purple Rain, Last December, When I Lay My Hands on You, just to name a few. My daughter (16) loves the soft side of Prince mostly. Her faves are Beautiful Ones, Laydown (she can't get enough of this one smile ), Delirious, Pop Life, She Loves Me for Me, Mellow, Controversy (FAVE!!!). My 14 year old is my foolish one, lol. He likes the Temptation, Kiss, Bambi, Sexy MF, Gett Off, Boys and Girls, Mountains, Willing to do the Work, to name a few.

I took my time introducing them to Prince because, well you know, his catalogue is long and some of it is eye opening material for children. eek They started out knowing Kiss, Purple Rain, Delirious, basically. Three years ago I introduced them to the movie Purple Rain (they were 10, 12, 14). Once I opened that can of worms they took off with it. Found what they could on youtube, google, whatever. Next thing I know I am no longer the biggest Prince fan in my family; my three joined the march with me lol

I can't get my 12 year old daughter to like Prince. sad Even though all her teeny pop idols like Justin Bieber and Jonas Bros. consider Prince a musical hero. Whenever one of her teeny pop idols mentions Prince as an influence I turn to her and say, "See? You're boy Justin Bieber has good taste." Though she actually started grooving to the 12" of "Erotic City" the other day when it came up on my Ipod in the car. She asked who it was and I said Prince. All she said was "Cool, I like the beat". Of course I had to change it as soon as the chorus hit as I don't want to be listening to a song with the word "fuck" in it with my daughter. confused

Three kids 15/8/4...all have been raised with P.

They all like his music, though recognize he is "wierd" or "looks like a girl" is a common comment..lol

Funny thing is , I need to school them on his old 'hits' as they know mostly his current stuff....my littlest one loves "hot summer', 'laydown', 'compassion', '3121'...they do know a few hit songs like LRC/PR/1999,,,but hardly any of the others..probably cuz I listen mostly to the new joints.

I have yet to take them to a P concert, but will if the opportunity arises.

My two kidbrothers always made fun of him. I think mainly because they had fun lovingly teasing me. However, they still aren't into him.

The baby that I look after, starts bouncing as soon as my phone rings, the ring is 'Play in the sunshine' lol lol

MJ is popular with the kids of my friend. I think because there are a lot of kids in his videos. The kids love to see those You Tube video clips with all these kids.

99% of my posts are ironic. Maybe this post sides with the other 1%.

My oldest, who is now 18, has loved "Paisley Park" since she was about 8 yrs old.

My youngest, who is now 14, has never voiced a preference.

I have three kids.

My oldest son (16) says "he's just too fruity"...but he likes some songs, mainly the big ones (1999, When Doves Cry). He also digs "Paisley Park" "Starfish and Coffee" and "I Could Never..."

My middle son (10) looooves Prince. He has the following albums on his ipod...Controversy, 1999, Purple Rain, Parade, SOTT, and 3121. He doesnt really like Around the World in a Day, but his favorite Prince song is "Pop Life" and he also digs "Paisley Park". He cant stand "Raspberry Beret" though.

Then again, my middle man likes a lot of old school...WAR, James Brown, Bob Marley, Parliament (he absolutely adores the "Motor Booty Affair" album). I think it has a lot to do with the fact that my wife and I went to see D'Angelo in concert (Voodoo tour) when she was 7 or 8 months pregnant with him. We spent the whole show with our hands on her belly, laughing our asses off because he was straight groovin in the womb that night.

My 8 year old daughter... disbelief Justin Bieber, Selena Gomez, Miley Cyrus...you get the picture.

I'm 19, been listening to Prince for about the last 3 years. My parents certainly had no influence in me becoming a fan of Prince. I don't even know if they know any of his songs, the only thing I've ever heard them mention is, "That gay guy?" And that's basically the extent of their knowledge.

My 11 year-old loves Starfish and Coffee, but I'm waiting 'til he's 13 (like I was) before I really introduce him to it all.

Gotta add: when Poom Poom came up on shuffle, he looked at me like I'd lost my damn mind... lol

I think my sixteen year old son is a little uncomfortable with in his eyes, my strange obsession with a man who's quite effeminate.I get that... but i can't wait for the day he see's beyond the high heels and embraces the music.

As for my ten year old son he's just oblivious to music, girls, you name it...just how ten year old's should be... wink

yeahthat

For me, (I'm 16) my friends think I'm just trying to rebel against mainstream music, and my parents think I'm just trying to rebel against them (they don't like Prince... I think they only see him as the guy in bikini breifs...)

When in reality, I have nothing against most mainstream music, it's just not my thing. Oh, and rebelling against my parents? If I had my heart set on that, I'd find something better.

I just love Prince music! I play guitar because of him, favorite album is Purple Rain, but I also love Parade, 3121, Dirty Mind, 1999...

The first song I ever heard by him was Controversy. 30 seconds in, I knew I was hooked! biggrin
