I'm 19, been listening to Prince for about the last 3 years. My parents certainly had no influence in me becoming a fan of Prince. I don't even know if they know any of his songs, the only thing I've ever heard them mention is, "That gay guy?" And that's basically the extent of their knowledge.

yeahthat

For me, (I'm 16) my friends think I'm just trying to rebel against mainstream music, and my parents think I'm just trying to rebel against them (they don't like Prince... I think they only see him as the guy in bikini breifs...)

When in reality, I have nothing against most mainstream music, it's just not my thing. Oh, and rebelling against my parents? If I had my heart set on that, I'd find something better.

I just love Prince music! I play guitar because of him, favorite album is Purple Rain, but I also love Parade, 3121, Dirty Mind, 1999...

The first song I ever heard by him was Controversy. 30 seconds in, I knew I was hooked! biggrin

Hey Teen, that's great! Be sure to keep the purple flame burning bright for another generation to come! Glad to hear that teens still like Prince, LOL smile

I have 5 yr. old twin boys & we took them to the Dec. 15th show in New Jersey & for him to open it with "Laydown" was a real treat for them. As far as knowing his music they know a very good portion of it with one knowing all genres & the other guy prefers the guitar-based material. They sometimes question his appearance when we watch the older boots on dvd.

My 11 year-old loves Starfish and Coffee, but I'm waiting 'til he's 13 (like I was) before I really introduce him to it all.

Gotta add: when Poom Poom came up on shuffle, he looked at me like I'd lost my damn mind... lol

I don't normally play Prince around my daughters, because they barely know who he is, and more importantly, if it's not on top 40 radio they won't listen. My son loves dancing to his music - and I know he'll be a fan of his music, but he's only 17 months old.

Anyway, I love The Rainbow Children cd and this one time I played "1+1+1 is 3" in the car w my daughter in the back and when the deep voice started... eek ...she said "What the heck was that?!"

I just laughed my ass off!

I'll be 15 at June 12. My parents got me into Dirty Mind, when i was six years old. Maybe that wasn't their best move. lol My fav is Get Off and The One. Thanks to me, my sister (11 years) started to listen Prince. She likes Love, Controversy and Kiss.

Firstly...I'm THRILLED to see you young people in here! biggrin woot!

on to the topic at hand...I have 2 sons 7 and 4 and they both like Prince, I don't bombard them with him constantly but they hear plenty and even tell me to turn it up on a few songs. When lotus flower came out my youngest (Aric) would tell me to play "yucky face" LOL! I dunno..I guess..just seeing the lower half of his face on the CD? shrug He likes no more candy for you and my oldest (Addison) likes colonized mind. they like plenty others but those 2 stick out right now. Aric rides with me more than Addison cause Addison's in school now so if I"m playing Prince in the car Aric will say, I know this song right mumma? and I say yep and he says make it louder. wink

"not a fan" falloff yeah...ok

(Of course all the teachers did)

my parents think im rebelling against them too, and they petty much hate prince, i dont know why...probably because i like him so much, plus they even try to make me like him less by saying im pretty sure prince is gay, HE WEARS HEELS!......which of course makes me very angry, and i have tried to explain it to them so many times why i like him and his music so much, and i even give them proof that he isnt gay, but they still dont care, i probably never would have fallen in love with prince and his music if it weren't for purple rain..... after i saw that movie i was hooked for life!

I know it's been a few days since you posted this, but I wanted to reply...

I love your attitude! I've heard the whole Prince is gay crap since I was in high school, some 20 years ago. And funny that Prince has been singing about this since 1981 "Am I black or white, am I straight or gay? Controversy!"

We all know he is straight, but even if he wasn't so what? Next time they bring it up, say "Maybe he is gay. So are Elton John, Ellen. Also Alexander the Great, Hans Christian Andersen, Susan B Anthony, Joan Baez, Clive Barker, William S. Burroughs, the guy who played C3PO--and countless others... If they tell you - you might be gay, tell them "I'm not gay, but I have a feeling my boyfriend is." eek Stops them in their tracks.

And keep up the positive attitude!

some people just like to make up things about you, or other people to make themselves feel better, but i dont let it bother me. Just because prince dresses a little feminine does not mean he is gay, all guys have a feminine side, but they just dont have the courage to show it. And like u said being gay should not change how or what people think of u, lots of GREAT people r gay! people judge way too much of whats on the outside when what they should b looking at is whats on the inside. Thanks for your advice, i will use it the next time! smile

my kids don't get it & i certainly don't push it on them. my son screws his nose up & my daughter will make an audible gag noise.. or she just gives me a look or a smirk. thing is i know she likes some of his stuff & i love to see her face when he starts screaming, her face is a picture of disgust then she'll crack up (in a good way)

My 7 year old LOVED the Forum show I took him to, was upset we didn't take him to the others! His favorite song is Let's Go Crazy, he likes the more rock oriented stuff (his favorite band is Kiss, LOL) None of his friends have a clue who Prince is... yet!

Never thought about it that way, but it's true. Prince has never been afraid to show that side of himself. Particularly in a society that encourages machismo conformity, not real expression.

Are you sure you're only 14? wink
