I think there are a couple of forces at work here ... ever seen an old prince vid of him in them underwears? .. i wouldn't want that out there if it were me, but on top of that he thinks he is all super conservative now .. doesn't sing dirty lyrics and all that .. so I think there is a shame factor at play .. he has embedded himself with a group of people that are very super judgemental and he's kind of like a gay christian republican that doesn't want anyone to know just how gay he used to be (or still is) .. His main selling demographic is conservative christians .. they are the only people that still buy his records outside of the die hards .. I am sure there are numerous stories he would prefer to stay in the closet .. which is why everyone is bound and gagged
The other force at work is abuse. If you look at the family abuse dynamic .. you will often (and I mean almost always) find some one who's whole life is about how horribly they were abused and how hard it is now because of it .. but the longer u get to know them the more it comes out that they are also very abusive and are repeating these patterns that they spout off about being bad, without even being self aware enough to acknowledge it as abuse and make the changes. Prince spouts off about record companies treating musicians like slaves ... like work for hire that the the record companies own the product and can control the image and art and all that. Well hello Prince calling the kettle black .. Prince treats his musical collaborators like slaves, gives them little or no credit, steals their work, calls it his own, sues them if they talk about it and who knows the level of sabotage that took place and why certain records never came out at certain times because of this abusive slave owner attitude. He uses people as product and does not respect their contributions nor does he respect them as people with basic human rights. Lets put the nail in the prince as a good guy coffin and remind you all of his spouting off about CONtracts. Yup! Remember how he was complaining that people were not free to do, say collaborate with whomever they want because of CONtracts. Yet his "friends", without whom purple rain would have been "for you part 6" .. without whom he would NOT be rich or successful and would likely have made the kind of boring music he makes now, yes his "friends" are not allowed to even share their own personal life because prince was in it and because of a CONtract. Yup thats Prince for ya.

Majority of the time, the former associates were saying nice things about Prince in recent years despite they wasnt always treated decent by him. For example Wendy and Lisa when they were promoting their album in 2009, they did a good round of interviews. While I had to admit me and some of their fans were worried because they were pretty candid with their relationship of Prince and I am sure Prince hated when people talk openly about him period nevertheless they said some very positive things. If my memory served correctly one of them said they never sign a confidental agreement with Prince and they were free to talk openly about him but again I could be wrong about this. Now Prince bullied them into silence with a lawsuit threat if they mention his name during their interviews. And also back in the 90s and even up til the mid 00s when Wendy openly discussed about Prince good or bad yet Prince never tried to sue her. Weird.
I understand that Prince former associates would rather make music without all the stress of course I do understand that, and plus making living doing what they love with also not the worries of threatened ligitations. I also believe they would rather want to remain on Prince good side. I think fans and I want the same its all about the music. But what is sad that Prince is being a bully by trying to control some of his former bandmates/associates lives when it comes to involving him and they continue to put up with it even though there are some affordable legal alternatives that can go in their favor if this gets too deep.

Now I may be wrong here but I read some of Wendy and Lisa interviews and one of them did said they never sign a confidentality agreement (I believe it was Lisa) with Prince and they were free to discuss open about him. But again I could be wrong. On the other hand that is why they were very open as they talked about Prince when they promote their album back in 2009.
If Wendy and Lisa didnt signed an agreement they shouldnt allow Prince to bully them into silence and that is mess up. Unless they just want to stay on their good side these days. I notice they tend to be the most forgiving former associates along with Sheila E especially after Prince treated them not so good in the past. Other associates seem like they dont want to think about Prince nor want to deal with him and had moved on.
But at the same time it is sad they cant share their history they had with him either these days even if they simply talk about the first time Prince met them.

James Brown did it, and we saw how it backfired.
I don't know his reasoning, but after the shit he pulled on this VERY site few years ago, I say fuck his reasoning.

I think the psychology is this:
Prince thinks:
I set these people up, I wrote most of their songs, without me they wouldn't have been known or famous. Now they don't need me I want to exert some kind of control in other ways, after all I created them and I don't want them to be a Frankenstein where they become bigger than me but without me.
These bands are my alter-egos, my babies almost and I can't let them do stuff without my guidance. I even created their name so they shoudn't take that if I have no involvement, otherwise it may confuse fans and spoil the 'Prince' brand. They have to learn who's boss, without me in the past they would be nothing, they need to respect who's boss.
Ex-members think:
Sure Prince did set us up, he is a legend but its our choice to continue as a band as Prince doesn't need us as a band anymore, therefore he should be pleased for us. Why can't we use the name? The fans love us so why not. We don't want to get legal, after all he set us up, therefore we'd rather let him have his say than spoil our link to a legend and a person we love deep down. He did give us a good chance and we don't want things to end bad, therefore we will do what he says, as well as the fact he has more money and good lawyers.
