"Something in the Water" Outtake Here's a simple one. Of the 2 versions of Something in the Water, which one is the re-make? My guess is that the fuller sounding, piano led one is the remake since used that one live most often, but if anyone else knows for sure, let's hear it |

Im going to go with the version on the album..MAY be the first version. However like When Doves Cry (which had bass on it) had a fuller version (being the finished version) Im going to speculate Prince had a better product with just the drums and minor keys as the incomplete version being put on the album...which indeed in my opinion is the better sounding version. It was cool eharing the unrelreased version, but it sounds not cold or spacey enough. Sometimes letting the drums do the talking adds to the enviornment. Less is more. Straight Jacket Funk Affair
Album plays and love for vinyl records. |

The outtake with computer sound effects and the piano is vastly superior IMO, its EXCELLENT, one of his best tracks ever.
The original on the 1999 album sounds very outdated now. |

No, the one I'm referring to was recorded later ?1984. You can tell by the SFX its way ahead of the album version |

The piano version was recorded later, some sources say 1984, it sounds like it was done later anyway. |

My favorite version is the one on 1999 - in fact, that's my favorite Prince song of all-time, to me the other version just doesn't compare, although I do like it and it's fun to listen to a different take on the song sometimes.
I always assumed the one on 1999 is the main version and that maybe later Prince decided he wanted to perform it in concerts, but thought the arrangement was too sparse so he threw it other instruments to make it work better live. I think it sounds cheesy and out of date...esp with the Linn cymbal effects.
The piano version to me is more melodic and sounds fresh now. |

One of my most fAvorite alternative songs. I love soft and wet and we can funk too... But this one stands out. There is something deeply passionate with how the keys and vocals work together. Love it! "Keep on shilling for Big Pharm!" |

So reactionary...you are like Ernestsewell's twin. (Thank God he's gone off this board).
I think I read it in Per Nilsen's book - it was definately one of the biogs I'm sure and they said it was recorded later, around the time of the PR tour.
